      Not a bad album at all. Sweet Amber, All Within My Hands, and Unnamed Feeling were great. Without that album, we never would have seen Metallica work out their issues and produce Death Magnetic.

    I think the biggest disappointment for me was the fact that there are no ballads, which really made the dynamic of this album on a macro scale very grating. James is probably the most confident he's ever been as a vocalist, and the brief gentle section in Inamorata was breathtaking. His vibrato and tone are spot on, but it just feels like a tease. He's more equipped for a low key track than ever, but they forgo one and its so frustrating ESPECIALLY with how intimate and vulnerable these lyrics are.

      The day that never comes is good, but half of the tracklist is just janky jumbled up filler with little bite or catchyness on both the vocal and riff front. Only good tracks besides that one are: All nightmare long, that was just your life, S*icide and redemption, and the Unforgiven III. Both DM have some of the same issues with them and also coincidentally get the d riding treatment too often.

    I think it's the best album in the Trujillo era, and glad he gets to shine more on this one. They really need to work on the ebb and flow of their albums though. I think that's been people's biggest complaint. Not every song needs to be 7 minutes. If they had an album full of 3.5-4 minute songs, throw in a 7 minute one, and end it and on an epic one; that would suffice. James does sound amazing though. You can tell his heart was into it.

      Love the Rob and Kirk contributions. No one talks about this, but I know they made these tracks with the live in mind, the boys technical ability is lowering every year and they want to keep it fun and doable. I know this album will permeate future setlists, no one talks about that theory.

    I've been enjoying it a lot so far. Back when Hardwired came out I wasn't really in the mood for Metallica so I didn't really get that much into it. The singles have grown on me over the years, but I don't have a well-formed opinion about the album as a whole. Can't say how well 72 Seasons will age for me, but I'm having fun so far. I have a lot of respect for Hetfield being very open about his personal issues in the lyrics. The more I age, the more I can relate to his more open post 80's lyrics while the older texts acquire new meanings. I do have to agree that the records is one-dimensional. I would have like a ballad or two as well. There are no ballads on Hardwired either if I'm not mistaken? But above all I'm just happy they are still around and active. The last three songs on this album are the best ones. Out of the four singles released prior to the album, all of them were fairly good as well, even if "Screaming Suicide" is the weakest among them. It's hard to say whether this is better than hardwired, but that's probably just because it featured the epic, and badass, "Spit out the Bone" . "Inamorata" is epic as well, but not in a way that recalls their classic sound. Overall, this is the type of music that it makes sense for them to be doing at this point in their career. It's better than their worst material, not as good as their 80's stuff, and is mostly a success, albeit not without minor issues. (Song lengths etc.) The only track I might feel compelled to skip is "Crown of Barbed Wire" which is the worst this album has to offer. "Sleepwalk my life Away" and "You must Burn!" are weaker tracks as well, but I like them better than say "Now that We're Dead" or "ManUnkind" from the last album, or "Cyanide" or the unnecessary "The Unforgiven III" from Death Magnetic.

    But unlike Iron Maiden, that was a one-off album 17 years ago and they're still putting out decent-to-great material now with actual energy. They're all good musicians and put out records with some great moments... drowned in a sea of over indulgence. If they cut the songs down to 3-5 min, I think they'd have a lot more staying power. I agree with your assessment that they just don't do anything with the extended runtimes. The songs keep meandering along, when if they had been split in two or left some of the overly repetitive parts on the cutting room floor they could put out a much tighter and more memorable album. I still really love the band, and aside from St Anger always find a couple good jams on their newer albums, I just wish they had a producer who could rein them in.

    The most frustrating thing about this is it could have been great (or at least decently good) if edited down. Nothing many others haven’t already said, and I really have nothing new to add… but I genuinely wanted to like a new Metallica album. I genuinely enjoy progressive metal tracks that run on and on, so it’s not just song lengths, or album length. Again, already been said, but it’s too safe.. I continue to just be a “first five albums are basically perfect, the rest meh” type fan.
    Oh well, back to the dozens of other great metal (and non metal) albums out so far this year. When there’s so much great new stuff to listen to, I just don’t even bother going back to stuff I found entirely mediocre on first pass. That’s this imo.

    I kinda agree with you especially on how they were closing thier songs. having said that I believe they contained music was done on purpose because this time they wanted to put James's vocal fron and center. for the first time they wrote the vocal before the riffs and that says something about how they wanted to deliver the message.

    IMO: Not every track’s an instant winner, but there’s enough of those to warrant the album’s existence. The title track and If Darkness Had A Son are some personal highlights. Also nice to see Kirk and Rob contribute more in the writing process.
    I guess I’m more let down by what the album doesn’t have than what it does. I was shocked to find out there were no ballads or instrumentals, which really makes a full front-to-back listen less enjoyable, at least up until Inamorata. Maybe that’s just Death Magnetic getting my hopes too high in that regard…

  • @tylerlewis9777
    @tylerlewis9777 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with some the points made here. However I do appreciate some of things that they are seemingly doing such as combining their key changes and styles from their Thrash albums from the 80s, groovy sounds in the 90s, even the agression from Saint Anger and injecting those creative aspects into Hardwired and 72 Seasons. Yes I agree they are playing it safe but at their current age and past successes in my personal opinion, if it isn't broke don't fix it. I really enjoyed watching this review. Hearing points I didn't even think about.

    I thought of Reload as the worst Metallica's album for years. After listening to 72 Seasons I decided to check out Reload once again for the first time in years. And I was blown away by how diverse their sound was on Reload, how spontaneous and unleashed their flow was back then. I loved Reload :) Thanks Metallica for that!
    The same thing happened to me before. When St. Anger came out, I didn't manage to listen it in its full. When I cringed with Death Magnetic, I've revisited St. Anger and it became my favorite ever Metallica album.
    And yes, 72 Seasons has its moments. I can listen to it!

      @@swampcrypt Totally wrong! The majority disliking the album demonstrates that Drewthemagnificent is right. The reason some people like it is just that they like everything by Metallica by default, since they can't process the fact that their favourite band released a bad album.

    • @okagron
      @okagron ปีที่แล้ว

      @@swampcrypt Nah. St. Anger is shit. Bad riffs, awful lyrics, incredibly repetitive and a lot of songs go on for far too long. It deserves the hate it gets. And Load and Reload also suck too, they are mid albums with way too many songs and it's the worst case of the band selling out for that mainstream money.

    I think the album is pretty darn good. Nothing mindblowingly amazing but a very solid listen. I like the thrash elements, the groove, the doom in all its parts. The standard out though is certainly Hetfield and his lyrics and delivery, which is some of his best work. It's almost a concept album if you read his lyrics and seem very personal and real to him.

    I understand the criticism, but I personally think the album is good. Not their most memorable or experimental one, but it’s still mostly enjoyable to listen to. A lot of the tracks have good lyrics, get me hyped and Trujillo sounds great on the album. Sure, they could’ve gone a little harder or shorten some tracks, but at the end of the day they’re pushing 60 and James went through some tough times during the last years (with his divorce and relapse). I’m just glad they’re still out there and they still sound really good live, so I’m excited to see them. If this is the kind of music they want to do and have fun playing, I’ll support them. They don’t really have to prove anything anymore, I think.
    Plus many fans weren’t exactly kind to them when they were more experimental and vulnerable with their music. Even last year few fans paid Kirk’s solo EP attention which was different from the usual Metallica sound. To me they’re kind of like my metal grandpas - their best music is in the past, but there’s something comforting about what they put out now and I’m just glad they’re still around. I honestly didn’t even expect them to put out another album after Hardwired, so 72 Seasons was a nice surprise that I’ve been listening to during these last weeks until I see them in concert again :)
