I voted 4 years ago, dude. I thought for sure our country was better than this, I thought we would have enthusiastically voted our hearts out to keep trump from ever being president. People didn't show up, or they voted 3rd party, or they voted for trump.
I'm pissed because 4 years ago I was begging people to do the right thing and show up at the polls, to not vote 3rd party in 2016, but all i got was a lot of grief for my efforts. We are here because we don't deserve better, we have the president we deserve. Face it, the US is trash for not taking our right to vote seriously, for not treasuring the US Constitution, regardless of how imperfect it is.
We aren't going to get rid of trump, even if biden wins in an overwhelming landslide. Trump will stay in power somehow, he won't ever leave the White House.
I just don't see the point in fighting it. We lost our democracy 4 years ago, we literally threw it away and I doubt it will ever really return in my lifetime.

I’m all for LotR content, so I’ll add my own hopeful quote from the movies. This is Sam, near the end of The Two Towers, after he saved Frodo from being scooped up by a Nazgûl in Osgiliath and Frodo almost stabbed him for it before coming back to his senses:
“It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered.
Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy?
How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened?
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer! Those were the stories that stayed with you - that meant something - even if you were to small to understand.
But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now.
Folk in those stories had plenty of chances of going back, only they didn’t; they kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”

@@jwvandegronden Do you live in America? If you don't, you'll never understand what it's truly like. You can research all you want, but I know what my fellow Americans really want. We don't want to police the world. We don't need to "be the best" at every single thing. We have a history of accepting people of all walks of life, of every ethnicity. And it has been fraught with conflict and racial inequality and police brutality, but it has also inspired people in a way that makes this country beautiful, and it's THAT spirit that will win out in the end. I will never give up. I will never stop trying to make this country a better place, in any small way I can. You can give up if you want. I refuse.

@@jwvandegronden I have done done extensive research. The fact that 228,000 people are dead right now, that educators (some of the most important people in any person's life are paid like garbage, that women's rights to birth control and reproductive rights and trans rights and strides in racial equality are being threatened probably mean nothing to you, but they do to me. You can sit there and pick apart every single detail of our history all you want, but there comes a point where you have to take that knowledge and acually do something about it. Trump pandered to and duped an uneducated, impoverished portion of the population that were desperate for solutions to their problem. Party affiliation means nothing to me anymore. I vote for who I believe has the best interests of the American people in their mind, and the strongest influence on the overall being of the nation. And most importantly, the person I believe most represents the people of our country. ALL of them.

I grew up with Jon, i remember coming to the news with a smirk and an understanding of the world around me.
My mom went to work, I was homeschooled and i watched the reruns comedy central from the night before, along with episodes of kids in the hall.
I remember when colberts satire show came to start, I remember thinking my god this man is a nerd also "whats lord of the rings?" I said to myself
I remember the Bush jokes, I remember when it was an honor to be on his show, i remember when fox news brought him onto their show (i still rewatch) to have Mr. Stewart just decimate them.
I graduated in 08, and i still kept going.

I hate to be that guy, but I'll probably never get the chance to best stephen on tolkien lore in person so I have to do this.. Sam and Frodo were not on the plain of Gorgoroth quite yet, they were in the valley between the Ephel Dúath, the mountains of shadow, and the Morgai. They were climbing up the ridges of the latter to look out on the plain only to see no way down or across all the armies. On that climb up they rested by some brambles and that's when Sam noticed the hopeful point of light shining above the mountains of shadow in the West.
Either way, I love this reference as it is the perfect sentiment for right now, and I love that he uses tolkien for such moments! :)

My two sons and I (they were then 15 and 21) attended this rally. There are people who don't think that the left have good people. There were people of all ages there. I started to feel very panicked and claustrophobic because we were in the middle of a very packed crowd (I didn't act panicked so no one could see how I felt). I have never felt more safe in a crowd or so proud of the people who were a group of people. Literally everyone was polite and kind. I'm not exaggerating. The right call themselves "Christian" and think that just because they believe they are fine. I bet there were all kinds of people from more faiths than just Christianity (and those who would say they didn't have that kind of belief system). I have never in my life been in a place with people who embodied the attributes that would be important to Jesus. I'm not preaching I'm increasingly becoming a person who fears they don't have faith in their life because of all I have experienced in my own life. I'm just saying people should know that these people in that crowd were the finest that America can bring to the world and that it's funny because you aren't going to hear it from their mouths what good people they are.
