Have long thought he was the most under-rated guitarist of all time. Maybe his likable, goofy, comic image made people overlook how incredible he was. Plus his talents on so many fronts diluted it all somehow. But he stands on the same level as Clapton, Hendrix, Page, BB, anyone you want to bring up. There are moments he plays fast, and you marvel. Then, he kicks it up into a pace that doesn't seem humanly possible...and it all is just as crisp and clean as when he started. Astounding.
I have played for 56 years and their may be better guitarists but Clapton, Hendrix, Page and BB couldn't hold a candle when it came to technique to Roy Clark.
His humor and magnetic personality made him an endearing figure. His reputation of being a genuinely nice guy was well deserved and his virtuosity was unparalleled. RIP Roy!

the tremolo picking is off the charts. I met him when I was 13. Changed my way of playing guitar. He told me "Play it all. You'll never know what the gig will be. Be prepared for anything." He could play Rock & Blues just as good as his Country Picking.

Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, amd Glen Campbell are always snubbed when it comes to "the greatest guitarists" lists because they're country pickers. Those lists want shredders and power chord players, metal and hard rock with distortion. Those three men are so insanely talented that it woupdn't surprise me if they were actually in the top 5 all time if anybody were to do a real list as far as the ability to play.
Jimi Hendrix, someone who can speak with some authority on the subject, once suggested Roy Clark might be the best guitarist in the world. Made me take note.
OMG - when those dancing pigs came on it immediately took me back to being about 10 years old and watching Hee Haw with my folks! I had completely forgotten about those until they came on to the screen! Man Roy Clark sure was something on the guitar wasn't he? Not only playing as he does but to also include perfectly timed comedy routines in there. Another thing I always enjoy when I watch his video's are looking at those vintage guitars he is playing, yeah they were new when he was playing but they are vintage now lol. RIP Roy, man you were a true gift from God.

Saw him on an old show called HeeHaw! He was In my opinion, the guitar player that inspired every guitar player to push passed the boundaries of there genre!! He could literally play everything better than everyone in any style. Didn't realize it till years later that he was my first inspiration for playing guitar. I am 57 and I thought my inspirations were early, BTO, Bachman Turner OverDrive, KiSS,ETC. Then Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, SRV you know who I'm talkin bout. I believe that Roy is inspirational to every musician that wants to be different "Push the envelope. You too can accomplish and take it further than where you found it. Regardless of your musical taste, you can learn from Roy Clark!!
He's paying a Gibson Byrdland. Oddly, also the guitar of choice of Ted Nugent. (Except for the cutaway style. You will occasionally see Ted playing one with a more rounded, Venetian cutaway, instead of the "sharper" Florentine cutaway.) .
He is definitely one of the most underrated and most proficient technical guitarists to ever play. He’s playing here with a tone that you can’t hide behind; no distortion no low end, very high-end sound so that if you make one little mistake it stands out like a sore thumb. His right hand technique is perfect. Just because he looks goofy and he’s playing sort of goofy music does not mean he’s not the best alternate picker of all time.
Roy and jerry reed were very under rated in the UK we might see then on the val Donegan show but other then that not much , we really only know jerry from his part in Smokey and the bandit , but he used to travel over (like roy ) and do a tour in the UK called "sing country" where top talent would be on one show around big venues my dad sued to drag me along in the mid seventies as he needed an excuse and i wanted a cowboy hat and bottle of pop and saw a lot of top talent including Roy who did a great show while they set up for others i was captivated by the sounds he made
So I watched another great guitar player from the 80's era, Michael Batio, (who is a shredder but so humble and nice) that has perfected "over the top" guitar flare. This guy has to be at the top of any greatest guitarist list. Not many players better than him regardless of genre of music. He was a master of every stringed instrument and could probably make shoe strings sound good.
Rock guitarists have mentioned Roy Clark not just because Roy played guitar, he played banjo, fiddle(violin), and who knows how many other instruments. Some of the best musicians have done studio backups for other bands for years now. And go on tour playing their own music and songs. Being good means being good. In studio means your record will sell good. These people knew each other. Yeah for us music fans!!!

James Burton was the heart of Ricky Nelsons sound, Elvis Presley, John Denver, Roy Orbison, the Monkees, Mama Cass, The Everly Bros, Jerry Lee Lewis and on and on.... He was and still is one of the most demanded session guitars because people want his sound.... Chet Atkins and probably Scotty Moore are the Godfathers of the rockabilly sound... It's the difference between a great guitar player and a revolutionary guitar player. You can listen to a piece of music and say wow that sounds like Burton or Atkins..... You watch Roy Clark and he's playing Riffs from Burton and Atkins... I guarantee you Clark would probably even admit it. That's all without getting into some of the great Rock guitarists..... Look at it like this if you take Liberace and Horowitz..... One was a fantastic piano player and a magnificent showman the other was incredible pianist that had no equal... Much better sound on this video than on many of his other ones. Roy's first LP.... "The Lightning Fingers of Roy Clark" was his best...in my opinion. Beautiful bell-like tones on that record.
Hard to imagine anything that could be done playing a guitar that Roy would not have been able to do. Yet, whenever you see these "Top 10 or Top 100" guitarist lists, they always make their lists as though anybody who isn't a rocker doesn't exist.

Trills...and trills , sweep pick once in a blue moon. its actually less complicated than the stuff played by modern masters. However he is an early pioneer and an accomplished musician who set the base standard in public view. Multiple instruments is even more amazing....great talent.

Alot of great guitar players out there for sure. I'm a rock fan by heart but I love all types of music. For sure Roy Clark was one of the best.❤

Trills...and trills , sweep pick once in a blue moon. its actually less complicated than the stuff played by modern masters. However he is an early pioneer and an accomplished musician who set the base standard in public view. Multiple instruments is even more amazing....great talent.

I don't think most people that aren't guitarists have any idea how hard it is to do those fast slides he does.
