Hey, Dewie here, if you want more skiing guides and trail POVs, they’ll be posted on Colorado Plankers. Currently, nothing is posted, but I’ll publish a bunch of 4K POVs once the season starts. If this skiing channel finds an audience, I’ll start making detailed skiing guides, instructional videos, and some surprises. I don’t have a lot of free time, but like making videos for others so I’ll put the time in if people want them. First resorts to be covered are Keystone, Breck, and Vail. Colorado Mallcrawlers will continue to have off-road and overland content.
3 Days ago was the first time I've ever snowboarded and it was only for about 3 hours. Most of this time was with my wife trying to help her get down some easy beginner trail at breck. A friend of mine and I were feeling pretty confident and decided to try schoolmarm after only being on a board for 3 hours tops. We made it down both of us are hurt and I'm pretty sure I broke my tailbone but we are alive and it was a blast.
Sorry you got hurt but it sounds like you’ve found a new passion! That’s how it went for me my first day on a board, but there’s nothing better than a day on the slopes! Thanks for watching and you’ll only get better!

Probably the most informative videos on keystone that I have seen. Haven’t been there since the late 80’s. Taking my 7 year old there in November ‘20 & March ‘21. Keep plugging away, I think you channel will catch on. Would like to see a video on Mountain House learning area in a little more depth and on taking a cat up to the bowls. And the differences between the bowls. Caught a couple of the Jeep vids as well. Good job.

My beginner experience was my fiance taking me to the top of Schoolmarm on a night ski evening, then saying Go. No regrets, there was no one on the slopes because it was 3 below at the base of river run. Plenty of room to learn lol. I used my helmet at the end of Ina’s way when I found ice and went splat.
Tanner Merritt yeah, that’s how I learned, but it was my cousins. However, after learning how to properly instruct, I definitely don’t recommend that anymore lol. Glad these are useful! They didn’t perform well for me, but I liked making them!
Colorado Mallcrawlers you never know, fine tune the tags, and they may just blow up when 20/21 season gets moving. People will be looking to maximize the efficiency of their time on mountain with the need to get reservation days, or possible lift lotteries.

Thanks for this great video Dewie! The end of Ina's way looks pretty steep/blue in your video (5:59) - how hard would it be for beginners to go down that? Would also love your advice on which 3 epic pass resorts near Denver I should visit if I have 3 days to ski during MLK weekend. I'm a beginner - mostly skiied the greens at Palisades and a couple days at Steamboat in the past. I was thinking to do Keystone, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge in that order (over Vail). Thanks in advance!
Thank you! It’s pretty steep and gets icy, but they have an easier slope if you stay skier’s left. It’s similar to the steeper sections of schoolmarm. Breck, keystone and beaver creek would work… I prefer vail over beaver creek tho. Have fun!

Tip: Osmo Action has awesome built-in electronic stabilization and you can get a nice little mini-lightweight tripod / selfie stick for you.... Ian! Thanks for the tips 😀... this was an experiment day (shot this with my phone, the others with a stabilized GoPro using your head mount tip 😉). I’m currently limited on the space I have for editing (using a cheap 32Gb iPad... had no idea it could edit 4K), but I’ll edit the GoPro videos next. Those kinda go with this one though... a mostly complete one shot capture of all 3.5 miles of schoolmarm and probably 1.5 miles of a Blue from the top. Anyway, come back in the winter!
My beginner's guide to Keystone is simple: Don't come here. Keystone is an intermediate mountain. Period. The greens at Keystone are on the harder side of the spectrum - especially if you are coming from the midwest or east coast or have never skied before. To be fair, I actually really like their bunny hill at Mountain House - it's a bit steep for a bunny but it is very wide - and, they have an actual chairlift to serve the top section which is Discovery (beyond the carpet). Combined, it is probably one of the best learning areas I have skied. The only catch is it can get really busy so you might be waiting 20 minutes to go up a short chairlift. You might be able to walk up the hill faster. Still beats a platter lift for me, but it is a slow fixed grip double. However, the jump from Mountain House learning area to any true green run is pretty big. At least you can lap Endeavor and Scout and then ride the Gondola back down. Schoolmarm is similar to Scout but 3.5 miles long with occasional breaks in difficulty. All the other greens are some how harder. The other issue with Schoolmarm is it serves as a highway for a lot of front-mountain runs - that feed in and out of Schoolmarm including blues and blacks. That means a lot of mixing of ability levels. And, since Schoolmarm (plus a few tributaries) is the main green run - nearly all the beginners are on it plus everyone else using it to get to another run. Instead, go to Breck's Peak 9. Its main issue there is that it is a victim of its own success - so lift lines might be a bit long (lapping QuickSilver). Schoolmarm isn't all bad. On a weekday, for an advanced beginner (solid parallel turns, comfortable with a bit of speed), Schoolmarm is a great run - especially since it is one of the few greens you can ski from the top of a resort in the west. You can't technically lap all of Schoolmarm since you have to decide to take Ina's Way back to River Run - but Peru at Mountain house only takes up half way up Schoolmarm. However, lapping only from Peru is a great way to ease into Schoolmarm.
That’s fine… but I was able to take never ever 4 and 5 year olds and get them to ski Keystone without issue. Keystone is a fine beginner mountain with the right mindset and I showed how to use it here. Some people will have to go to keystone over other options because of their significant others/family/friends so that’s why I made this.
@@coloradomallcrawlers I was skiing some blues in West Virginia and found Schoolmarm challenging (2 hours to get down), granted it had been a decade prior. Sure, while going down I saw plenty of 40 lbs kiddos plowing directly down without issue. Several other friends and family have looked at Schoolmarm and questioned the rating, so it's not just me. My sister can ski blacks in West Virginia and told me the blues at Keystone were very similar in difficulty to WV blacks. So, based on that, I think Keystone is default harder. I assumed that was simply how Rocky Mountain skiing was until I visited Breck. Breck's greens have more variety allowing for a more natural progression. For example, I can basically just point my skis downhill on Frontier. My main gripe with Breck is their bunny hill is too short and flat, and their learning hill uses a platter lift. So, to me, Breck is better for beginners that are ready for something beyond the bunny hill.
Top of the schoolyard section past the fence. They may have stopped calling it the schoolyard as it’s just a section of schoolmarm. Easiest way to find it is to grab a map, locate the top of Peru, follow the cat track down and make your left onto schoolmarm (aka the schoolyard)... head right into the trees. These trees are not for beginners tho, I just love trees so I’m always talking about trees. The trees for advanced beginners are Ripperoo’s Glades. Thanks for watching!

Haven't skied in many moons, but my wife and teenage son and I are all pumped to go next winter. I think I am down to picking Keystone or Monarch to get my season pass. Can I really go wrong with either?

Glad it was useful and thanks for watching! I’m trying to make them somewhat useful as I’m not a very good vlogger lol. Lifts close at 4p If there is no night skiing, 8p if there is night skiing. Night skiing is included in a day pass. Keystone’s website has a night ski map which also has the current schedule for night skiing on it (google night skiing keystone map). Note if both bases are open for night ski or it’s just a river run night. Have a great trip! Keystone is one of my favorite resorts! Oh, if you watch my top to bottom videos, just know, the GoPro flattens the pitch a bit.

One last thing, im 29 and this is my first time skiing, im a multi sport athlete and have been able to pick up anything athletic pretty easy most of my life so naturally i am not taking lessons lol but i am taller(6'3) than most people i have watched on tutorials, is there anything taller people have to be aware of or trouble they might encounter while skiing ?
Justin Rodrigues Well, ice skating is the closest sport to skiing. If you can ice skate, you’ll pick it up quickly. I’m 6’2” so I feel ya, the biggest thing will be your center of gravity. 4-6 year olds can ski well because they have a low center of gravity and a lack of fear! Still, once you find your rhythm, you’ll be skiing well in no time! Definitely start on a carpet first tho... make sure you can stop there before moving to endeavor or scout. Once you can turn, you’ll start to progress quickly! Good luck!
David, for a beginner, it is. I made this guide based on my years of teaching beginners on it including uncrowded days. I get based on your perspective, it is not, but saying that would not serve a beginner well. Appreciate the feedback though.

It varies, their webpage has the rates for the day you want to go.
The top of Schoolmarm is NOT steep. It is crowded. Ski the sides.
