  • Hey I hope you're all doing well! Looks like we're getting back into the swing of things. Can you believe it's been a whole year? What happened!? Well I guess none of that matters now. What matters is finishing, and that we will.
    In this video we do a quick shop tour and then start back on the Mini Town Bicycle Build. I only get to chasing the threads on the bottom bracket shell but hey, it's a start!

    You don't know how jelly I am of that Park Tool Thread Cutter ! I've screwed up the BB threads on my daily ride (was too desperate to rebuild it, having gone weeks without it) and would love nothing more than to fix it myself, eventually.
    Decided instead to put the £500 towards a custom frame that will accept a Pinion gearbox + belt drive: 'in for a penny, in for a pound' as we Brits say!
    Good to see you back, all the best :-)

    Nobody minds someone pausing a build to move their entire shop. The new space is huge! Cool you're still doing your thing man. Nothing wrong with budget tools, second hand tools you never know what they broke and fixed wrong, modded, or "upgraded".
    Thanks for showing the dies working. Over time it'll pay for itself in grinding/finishing time of donor bike crap. :D
    For your bench holes, here's a couple of "super glue wood tapping tricks" out there. Like for tapping machine thread holes in wood. Straight superglue in the hole, "Baking soda and super glue"(guitar luthier trick), etc. Less worrying about messing up your nice cabinets the better! :)
    Sorry this comment got so long, glad you're back! Thanks for letting us hang out in your new shop!

    Three things: First, welcome back! Second, oil is 1 part on the cutter 2 parts on the cut. And last, but not least, third, you should always clean the inside of the threaded area of any welded dingleberries. Reason is, you'll have chips that can be just as hard or harder than the thread cutter itself. And considering how expensive (vs how they should be) it's best to keep them away from chipping. Especially since any chip on these can destroy threads later.

    What happened to the guy who used to run this channel? The former guy was bright, inquisitive, articulate and meticulous. This goofy stoner can't remember shopping for parts, buying them, or even what they are. The old videos were engaging and informative. This one is tedious nonsense. The explanation around the bottom bracket taps was scary. Smoke much?

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wasn't sure how to respond at first but after sleeping on it I realized it's a great question. 2020 was a challenging year and I had a lot of other things to think about, so the channel took a pause for much longer than intended. When I began to think about starting again I needed something to change, I wanted to try some new things. A year ago when I left off, I was making content that was scripted and took a lot of time to produce. When I'm doing voice overs and you can't see me on camera - I'm reading from a script in most cases, especially when I'm talking about technical things. In my most recent videos, there's no script. It was intentional because I wanted the videos to feel more off the cuff and natural like you're just hanging out with me in my shop. I'm not excusing myself from my flakey presence in the last few videos. It's true that I look like a stoner! However, even though I live in CA - I do not smoke. ;) I appear that way because I'm still extremely uncomfortable on camera, so much so that I often forget what I want to say. But this is the reason I'm shooting this off the cuff format because I want to improve in this area. Like everything in my life, I'm always looking for things to improve on. So that's why I'm bad at this right now. And who knows, I may never get good at it but I want to try. I feel like this embodies the spirit of my channel. It's for people who want to learn and improve on things they may not be good at in the beginning. And lastly, if there's one thing I have taken away from 2020, it is that I should keep striving to improve myself and have compassion, understanding and forgiveness for other's who are on that journey with me. I appreciate the question and I hope that clears things up.
