For my Niche Zero, I've been using the RDT since I read about it shortly after it was brought to popular TH-cam channels. It is certainly effective! As for the WDT, for the last four months or so I have been using a blind shaker that I made on my 3D printer and find it produces very consistent extracts. I think it was Lance who did some analysis on the effectiveness of the blind shaker, so I gave it a try and am happy with the results I now achieve.
Josh, many thanks. If one uses WDT can one dispense with using the other common "leveller + compressor" distribution tool that is weighted like a tamper and has 2-4 polygon "fins" (there is presumably a better word) on the underside of the tool which level and compress the top of the coffee grounds in the portafilter? With my starter Delonghi ECP with 51mm portafilter I was using WDT tool + leveller + compressor distribution tool + tamper with a bottomless portafilter - but as I'm now upgrading to a Rancilio Silvia and need to buy 58mm equipment I'm hoping I won't need th leveller + compressor distribution tool.
Yes - you can get away from using the Leveler. It’ll take some practice and fine tuning the WDT so you’re sufficiently happy with the surface of the bed prior to tamping but it can be done. - a single knock down on the bench after WDT will settle the bed enough - and if done correctly will be flat and even. Alternatively you can get a 58mm Normcore combo tool like the link below - I have one and it works well 👍 alternativebrewing.com.au/products/normcore-distributor-tamper-combo
For RDT, how much is enough? Does the amount of water used affect the outcome? How much is too much? Edit: Came across scientific journal "Moisture-controlled triboelectrification during coffee grinding". 20uL/g seems to be suggested.
Shouldn't you spray the WDT tines with water to prevent static? Surely there would be a name for that process as well, and probably a special spray bottle just for that.😊
Honestly, I don't notice a huge shot time difference or any noticeable channeling doing Stockfleth vs wdt. +/- about 3 seconds on back-to-back-to-back shots either way. Both taste the same, to me, too. I'm not saying there isn't a difference, but I can't tell. Maybe I am bad at wdt. I do use it on the picopresso simply because I don't have a 51mm catch cup and distribution is harder than with a portafilter. I have a spinny distributer too. Don't really use that anymore either. Grind into dosing cup, flip, Stockfleth, tap, tamp pull. But if it is fun or makes a difference, I am all for someone using it! RDT is a must for me, or I get crazy static.
RDT is definitely a must! It's a game-changer for me, and I'd say it's more important than the WDT too. Stockfleth + lateral knocking all way when working in a cafe 🙌
The gospel according to Lance says that a blind shaker is more effective than WDT. I'm not that crazy about the workflow with a blind shaker though, and still prefer WDT most of the time.
Hahaah yeah I watched that one too. Tried it - & would agree on both counts. It made a difference to a certain degree- but I found workflow much easier and more enjoyable with the WDT ☺️

Excellent introductory lesson Josh!
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it!
Nice one joshy
Thanks fam 🙏 trust you’re enjoying your VS3!
Please review the new eureka mignon single dose pro grinder 😊
Will do

Is it recommended to use water mist on a 1zpresso hand grinder?
No - hand grinders have much less static build up and have essentially zero grind retention compared to electric grinders

2-3 sprays is good for a 20g dose.
I wouldn’t necessarily go a start weighting it 😅

Some serious splashing though at 3:56...

I guess ‘How to use water and some sticks’ sounds less interesting.
Your mum would know. That's how you were conceived.
Ahaha 😂 we like to be fancy sometimes
