    So glad you mentioned about the cost of getting rid of things (a result of hyper-consumerism), and so to carefully think in the future. Decluttering has become so popular now, but it is so important not to rely on ‘rules’ such as one-in-one-out, and instead buy things that you love and will last years, if not a lifetime!

    Melissa, this is an extremely helpful video. Thanks! When it comes to towels and blankets you no longer need, I've found that animal clinics often like to take them.

      Great suggestion, there's so much animals "in transit" (rescue) needs. Many times clinics are fascilitating this and need help with care items and even buying food. It's not just dogs and cats, from very small to very large animals... thanks for remembering our animal friends :)

    I held onto every piece of clothing my kids wore! I sold a few on Facebook but if they didn’t sell, back in the bin they went. UNTIL...... i started travelling to Haiti on church mission trips. It felt so good to bring almost new (and some new) items to the orphanage. My first trip i brought 32, yes 32, suitcases of tightly rolled clothes. I alreadt have 9 hockey bags full for my January trip!

    Thanks for sharing! Just a suggestion... a great way to declutter & have it be a teachable moment...is get the kids in on the action. Tell the kids to clean out a certain room, area, or closet. They must try to decide what goes in donation bags/ boxes. Parents must supervise the process so the kids don’t donate something you want to keep. Then after the donation bags/boxes are filled tell them they should sell those items. When all/ most of the items are sold they can split the money 50/50. 50% they get to keep and 50% goes to a charity of their choice. It’s not about how much money they made but learning about hard work, decluttering, responsible consumerism, managing money, being charitable, etc.🙂

    I recycle the clothing that's worn out and take everything else to a kids consignment shop or goodwill.
    Other things I'll hand down to friends or try to sell on offer up.
    I got a huge kick out of the collectibles conversation bc my husband is also a collector. My goal is to get him display cabinets once we have the space so he can fully enjoy them and I won't have to worry about as much dust!

    I de-clutter by exporting various items (i.e. clothing, kitchen goods, etc.) to Ghana, West Africa to adults & children in the villages (the equivalent of our countryside or rural areas here in the states) over there who have need. I also use Let Go & FB Groups as often as possible, but oftentimes people can be unnecessarily fickle about buying, even when you always give away excellent quality stuff. I also "keep an eye out" for local news headlines for ways to be a blessing to people in need after they've experienced some sort of setback or otherwise challenging circumstance (i.e. a hurricane, etc.).

  • @wordscrafter
    @wordscrafter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We've been decluttering slowly for a couple months now. Several items (like a vanity, a treadmill, and a few other things we didn't want to cart off to the salvation army) we've just taken to the curb, put a FREE sign on them, and they get taken away. Others, I've put into boxes and taken to the salvation army donation center. LOTS of clothes and really decent shoes were taken to a family who knew people who'd lost everything in a fire. People always know people who need something, so that's always my first option.

    Goodwill, despite what most people think, does communities a lot of good with their profits. I work with people who are intellectually disabled and my local Goodwill association uses a large portion of their profits to fund day habilitation/respite programs to support caregivers and they also help people with physical and intellectual disabilities find employment (outside of Goodwill stores) by advocating for them and helping them to best market their skills to potential employers. So, don't feel like donating to Goodwill is just funding a corporation and doesn't benefit anybody. That is so far from being true.

    • @duncandy

      Alyssa McGray well, my local Good Will chapter that I supported for decades decided to be greedy and corrupt. They literally padlocked all stores in the middle of the night and left the employees with nothing.

    I know when I save things to sell, that I never will. I’ll never find the time or I’ll forget to ship it promptly. It is a savvy tip to make back money, but if you’ll never do it just donate it now. I still have to remind myself this constantly.

    You can also donate to your local highschool sports team Here in Southern Oregon to be on the highschool cheer team each person has to raise $1200.00 for there uniforms, bows, shoes, ect... If you don't have the money they do a ton of fundraisers to help with the cost so if you don't have money your not excluded.
    One of the ways they make money is a yard sale. The cheer girls go around and ask there friends and family for items they would like to donate and with the profits from the sale goes towards there balance. In the states if you donate to a school or charity and you get a receipt you can use this for a tax deduction.

    Melissa great video! Sometimes I will place stuff on the Facebook groups. When it comes to clothing I normally donate it. If it's clothing that's worn out, I just toss it. Sometimes I will put stuff on eBay.

    • @Arazig
      @Arazig 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If clothing is worn out, I will often make rags with it before tossing it. One last final use for that cotton shirt that is falling apart at the seams. Perfect for the garage or bathroom fixtures. My grandma would make rags out of old (CLEAN!) underwear to shine silver since the soft cloth wouldn't scratch....

    I don’t have any high end stuff. I have a Hospice thrift store within a few miles of my house where they say “We will take anything. If we can’t sell it, we’ll give it away. If we can’t give it away we will recycle it or trash it as a last resort”. Consequently anything not suitable for gifting to family or friends goes there.

    I donate a lot of valuable items to charities like Goodwill. I try to sell some things first but this often proves impossible due to unexplained reasons people won’t buy a barely used item like a leather recliner. Goodwill is also a little finicky about taking some perfectly good items because they don’t sell fast. Reselling some things is hard because, once they are out of their original box or package, people don’t recognize what they are or what they are for. ...I won’t buy used clothes myself. ...Sadly, many people discard perfectly good things because they are well-to-do and can’t be bothered with the time it takes to donate or resell. 🤠

      You could always try donating them to charities or homeless shelters (possibly even jails/prisons depending on their rules). People need something to do in their downtime after all.
      Something I did was to take a box of books and place it outside on the front lawn near the road with a sign for people to take what they wanted. The remnants would go to my local shelters.

    The beginning of the video was blurred and there was a delay in Melissa s voice throughout the entire video, if you read her lips you can see it doesn’t match the actual words...:(

    Good for Chad to move forward. I never understand grown adults with garages full of toys meant for a child boy to actually play with and have fun.

    The best thing about your video was the use of the word, "responsibly". If people didn buy so much excrement, we wouldn't be in this global conundrum.

    I’m in the US. Consider your tax bracket. In my case I do much better donating to a charity and getting a receipt. I need as much of a write off as possible.

    • @dianeschenkelberg8270
      @dianeschenkelberg8270 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not likely with the new tax laws. The standard deduction is so high and there's a cap on how much you can deduct for property and state taxes if you itemize. Most people are better off taking the standard deduction, so no write-off for items you donate to charity.
