Painting a 1/6 Captain Kirk - Entire process - Part 1

  • EDIT: When I did these Captain Kirk videos a few years ago, I had a lot of people asking me to do videos with voice overs. Well I now have a Patreon account and on there I do full length real time tutorials, similar to these videos.. but without the music and I'm talking WHILE I'm painting, and explaining everything I'm doing and why. They're becoming really popular so they should be around for some time. I choose each subject based on stuff that should hopefully be interesting or useful to people. (how to paint black skin, interesting characters, how to paint old or female skin, stuff that's simply cool looking...) come on over! - www.patreon.com/darrencarnall
    ----------------------------------
    People have been sending me messages for a while asking to see how I paint my 1/6 scale head commissions. I've already done a couple of short videos, but this time I wanted to show the whole thing from start to finish!!
    I filmed myself painting a master sample of this new sculpt of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk (for a limited run of custom figures coming soon). I recorded the whole thing and edited it down (from a week of painting!) to about an hour and a half. Obviously lots was cut out, but I do show every stage of my painting. If not every repeated layer.
    I've split this into ten minute sections to make it easier for people to watch. I'll try to post a new vid every few days or something.
    I hope you enjoy seeing how I do my work!

    Hands down, this is the best tutorial on painting 1/6 heads on the 'Tube. In this community you see so many artists that don't want to share information as if they're going to lose all their customers or something.
    There are up-and-comers like myself whom want to see how far we can go with this, but the knowledge is really hard to come by.
    I thank you profusely for this and consider this an important gift that you have given to people like us
    Thank you Bro!

      +dirty Afr0 Hey you're welcome! And thanks so much!! You just gave me a huge smile this morning :)
      I'm actually about to start doing new tutorials here on TH-cam and my Facebook page, and some special 'full in depth from start to finish' ones for my Patreon supporters. Unlike these ones (even though you found them useful) there'll be no music as I'll be talking along while I'm painting and explaining what I'm doing! I've just set up a new 2-camera arrangement so I can switch from one to the other, and hopefully I'll be making several videos a week. Maybe even one a day if I can. I'll basically be filming everything I'll be painting from now on!
      Some will be full paint jobs edited down to one short video, some will be random 'here's how I paint eyes' type thing, and some will be random 'whatever I'm painting at the moment' live streaming style vids. And then in Patreon I'll be doing the full tutorials from start to finish.
      Basically... lots to come! So hopefully you'll find some of that useful too. I'll be starting in maybe a week or so!
      Thanks once again! :)

    Really excellent tutorial. I don't usually work with the grey heads like you have here. At least I don't do full repaints of these but have been known to do partial repaints on some ready painted ones and lots of flesh toned ones. I am really happy to have found your channel. I have a terrible time with eyes due to my failing eyesight (being ancient has drawbacks lol). I am sure I will learn a lot even though most of my flesh textures are made with chalk pastel laters. I think the more techniques I experience the better. Love both of these...as you already know, they look totally realistic which is what most of us are striving towards!
    I think the fact that I tend to mix my own foundation for My face might work in my favour lol!

      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +cliffedward haha, yeah I probably do lots of things you're 'not supposed to do'. I'm usually careful when I do it, and mostly it doesn't contaminate the paint in the pot. But even if it does, then I either simply avoid that part next time.. or more likely just accept that a bit of unplanned variation can actually help to maybe mix you a microscopically different colour than you were aiming for. And Subtle variations is exactly what you want. I've never had any problems yet ;)

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well it's difficult to say 'what colours' as all brands have different names and you probably use completely different ones than I do. As a simple answer I'd say just work exactly the same as you normally would... except do more pale highlights and keep away from the suntanned deep flesh shades. Although you don't want him looking like a ghost. Just work with your skin colours but add touches of cream or pale flesh to the mixes perhaps.

    Very helpful tutorial! Any tips for making or buying the sticks that hold the heads? I’ve been using pens and markers and anything else I can find but I’d like to get some designated head-holders. Lol.

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Thanks! Yeah quite early on I knew I needed a more reliable set of head=holders, and I basically went to B&Q (a hardware store if you're outside the UK) and picked up some lengths of wooden dowel that are about 15mm or just over half an inch wide. It turned out these were the exact width to fit inside most heads 'with necks', if there's ever a different head then I'll use a thinner piece of dowel and shover the inside with blu-tack or even just wrap some kitchen paper around the dowel until it fits nice and tight.
      A simple holder for all those heads on sticks is to get a flat piece of firm packing foam, and cut out a load of small holes. Then when you're working on them you can just stick the stick into it and pick up the next one. I've used this method for the last 12 years now and one square of foam holds about 15 - 20 heads.
      I hope this helps! Let me know if you need anything else! 👍 😊

    What brand of paint do you use? And what is that paint thinner (?) you are using to dillute the tanned flesh colour in the beginning? Thanks.

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Yannick! The thinner is called Flow Enhancer.. and it works like water but helps stop the paint from splitting, and keeps it more like a paint consistency. I use it and water combined..
      I don't use any particular brand of paints though, I just buy whatever I can from the art shop and I then mix the colours on the go while I'm working, depending on whatever shade I need. There's no set list of colours, brands or anything....

    Although I am using polymer clay, I have been trying to use layering of watered down acrylic paint on the eyes but finding it very frustrating because although I give it plenty of time to dry each layer when I go to put another layer on it picks up the previously dry layer and spoils it 😢 any advice would be appreciated.

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you use any kind of primer on the clay before you paint it? Or do you paint directly onto the clay?

    • @MaZEEZaM
      @MaZEEZaM 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Directly on the clay, 1 eye went well but the other seemed to have the issue I described above. I am thinking perhaps I am watering down the paint to much as since the comment I have tried using much thicker paint water mix and had better results. I do still have the issue of the surface not being smooth using the thicker paints but being a bit more careful to kind of smooth it as much as possible with the brush as Im painting it seems to help. I think with future pieces I will try priming the piece first and see how that goes though the texture and feel of the polymer clay with many very thin layers of paint is really quite nice.

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the primer is only sprayed on thin shouldn't change how the clay feels, but it will make the paint stick to it better. Then if you paint in thin layers (so no brush strokes are visible) then you should have better results. Good luck!

    Great video! Do you mind if I ask what sort of rubber you use for final product or is it resin? Looking to make a spare head for my Hot toys figure but not sure how easily would it come off since hot toys head is softer and you wiggle it out.

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      These were resin, and sculpted by someone else. Usually if hard resin heads were to be attached to a Hot Toys neck then a hole would be drilled up into the head, just tight enough for it to be pushed on, and then it could be held with a dab of glue or something.

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm trying to remember those specific heads, but usually the first layer is dark, the second layer is dry brushed with lighter. Then I do a wash of a leather brown shade to nicely tone the skin. And then I go in with thin glazes of localised, subtle shadings and different colours around different areas of the face. It slowly builds up into 'skin' looking.

      +Benjamin Adiwidjaja Hi Banjamin! Thanks for your kind words! yeah I just said "after several layers" instead of actually showing me painting the same thing over and over again. I painted the full head as I was doing, then let it dry. Than painted another layer on top (same colour), and built it up until it was a decent base coat. I prefer to do several thin layers like this rather than one thick one. When I started adding different colours was when I brought the video back in :)

      Hi there! It's called flow enhancer, and it lets you water down paints to thin them, but add a few drops of this and it keep the paint-like quality and removes and surface tension that might cause problems. (and if you buy them from this link Amazon throws a few pennies at me which helps me carry on painting for a living!)

    • @DarrenCarnallCustoms
      @DarrenCarnallCustoms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I spray my heads with grey primer from a can (regular multi purpose primer, or car paint primer), then paint on top of that. And yeah those Vallejos. Model Color I think they're called. I haven't used them yet but they should be good. PVC figure should be fine, I would just do a thin coat of primer before I painted. :)

I have a separate account on Patreon where I do my full painting tutorials (I paint things from start to finish, and talk and explain what I do and why/how as I'm painting). More and more people are joining up and learning to paint or improve their painting every month, but I can understand that it might not be for everyone. So where's the voice over? lol A good v/o really helps the viewer better understand what it is you are doing and why. Just simply showing images, doesn't always show or let us know what's truly going on and why. Voice-overs are easy to do. You can even use software to record directly onto your PC. I do V/O for all my videos!
