    The max speed of this tug is only 12.5 knt, but we got the advantage of the raising tide and you must take account that we are "surfing" on the wave caused by the bulbous bow of the car-carrier

    Thanks for posting this video. Professionalism is almost always a pleasure to watch, especially when it involves big ships, tug boats, connecting them together or dealing with a problem (which was not the case, here). It does look like the ship is moving rather fast for the maneuver, but the tug is up to it, and they got it done expeditiously. What fun that would have been to watch.

  • @pilotg2426

    I'm a pilot AND a tug master and there is no point in connecting to a vessel at that speed, especially if you are at full power, just to maintain position. What good are you to the pilot if you are smashed up? If the pilot has to maintain that speed to retain control then you need to wait before hook up. But, don't listen to me. Let's see what the court of inquiry says....

    In this case, the tug is not necessary for towing but for manoeuvering. Ships of this size are very hard to handle in tight spaces like a harbour. A tug is needed to push/pull them to or from the quayside. That's why there is one at the stern of this car-carrier as well. The tug at the stern is used as a braking tug as well.

    • @viciousKev

    Physics... for a cargo ship it's a lot like trying to tip over a shoe box, though if the hull is more cylindrical (think of a log or a racing sailboat) then all bets are off. Racing sailboats hang heavy keels to improve their stability.

  • @Spheredalai

    Oooooh surfin the bulbous bow!

  • @peterlatraca
    @peterlatraca  14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @pilotg2426 i agree with you, the tugboat isnt usefull if it's crash against the hull of the ship. But even without any accident at this speed the effect of the tugboat over the ship is almost none.
    The high speed is justified by local pilots due strong winds some days specially in autumm, but some days like the day of the video is only to save some time.

    Well, if the ship would go that speed while we had to connect the tug, we would not come in front of that ship. That has to be like 11knots or so.....
    If the tug engines fail for a few seconds it's byebye tug....

      It's a new type of extreme water sport. In the least amount of time, your team tries to safely secure a line from the front of a speeding cargo vessel displacing tens of thousands of tons. Any mishap, and you & your crew will possibly be crushed by the bow of the oncoming vessel. This team here did an excellent job, and celebrated afterwards with shouts of triumph!!

    That thing (automobile carrier) is a floating bread truck. The cargo is very light for its size so for economy's sake the ship ends up as a huge balloon perched on top of a relatively small hull. Photo here shipphotos.co.uk[/]pages[/]hualtransporter.htm . Sometimes they do fall over. Google "Cougar Ace" .

    Me gusta porque es sobre mar y buques. Pero le sobre como un minuto porque en un mismo plano, con la misma acción durante un minuto resulta patético." Además cualquier "buen" y "verdaderamente apasionado" vídeo-aficionado con unas nociones mínimas sobre grabar y editar-montar (algo que ya veo "por aquí" observo abunda poco), sabría que un plano que ensaña lo mismo no puede durar mas de 3-6 segundos. Pero lo que se ve me gusta. Al autor, si "le interesa," le recomiendo este buen libro: Vídeo Para la Web con Premiere (Thomas Luehrsen) Ediciones ANAYA MULTIMEDIA. Aunque no se edite con Adobe da una buena información de como crear vídeos orientados a publicar en la red.

  • @Kellerkind38448

    @ omar hernandez:
    Because these huge ships have no clutch. When the engine is running, the screw is also turning. The ship immediately takes to ride and the braking distance is very long. That makes it impossible to maneuver in tight spaces.

    • @hughtufnail302
      @hughtufnail302 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kellerkind38448 Hi guys, although the prop is turning they are variable pitch, meaning blades can change directions of thrust. All ships do a pitch test when in tight quarters, meaning changing pitch to see if every thing is operational.

      @@hughtufnail302 Actually you mean controllable pitch propellors where the shaft does not stop, but the blade reverses from a forward to astern direction. Variable pitch means the pitch (distance of advance in 1 rotation) changes across the blade. Both my ships had controllable pitch propellors in the Navy. My merchant ship did not.
