What happened to the Solway Viaduct?

- Lets take a look at some Abandoned railway engineering.
You join us on the southern bank of the Solway firth on what was once the western end of Hadrian's wall, and the edge of the roman empire, lets take a look at the remains of something quite remarkable. Lying across the Firth is Scotland and to the north the furnaces of Lanarkshire. On the English side the iron ore mines of Cumberland. So how to join the 2 without the detour through Carlisle 10 miles or so to the east? A viaduct of course, and the birth of the Solway Junction railway.

Thanks. I've been fascinated by crossings of the Solway for years, since discovering the history of the area, including Glen Caple, in 1968 on my bike ride from the Lakes to Cape Wrath.
Quite a bike ride. Lots of interesting things around the Solway
Really interesting, thanks

Thanks for watching. We had some of the greatest engineers in the world once of a day.
Excellent video and very informative. Thanks for posting
Thanks
Interesting video thanks. Did a walk around Annan recently which included the old railway line down to the Solway shore. Had never heard of the viaduct before so interesting to get more detail on it.
Thanks for watching, and commenting
My then girlfriend's idea: with her, holding hands, I actually walked across the Solway at that point in about 1969 to Eastriggs. It's very shallow, obviously!!!!
Wow rather you than me. Bet it was tough going
Great video mate. I’m from Annan. Annan is dripping in history. From the sandstone to have rumoured to be the base of the Statue of Liberty to Robert the Bruce. Unfortunately all is getting lost as the museum is getting less and less and the new generation isn’t caring. Story’s are getting lost in the sands of time unfortunately
Thank you, I need to explore more of the Annan area.
@@eastwoodsadventures Annandale whisky distillery. Lots of history there and a good place to start.
@rosco3223 Whisky is always a good place to start, and finish come to think of it 🤔 😆
