Awesome! That's the best mic setup for vlogging, etc. on the GoPro that I've seen so far on TH-cam. I can see that it eliminates any stress on the usb-c port and the audio adapter wire. Plus it gets the mic up top where it's easy to turn in any direction. Cool. I subbed.
Great video, Mitch. One of these days I start using a wireless mic again. You explained this to make it seem easy to do. I am going to use my GoPro7 more. Fly safe.
Well that's an ancient video you found from back when my channel was about drones. It's nice to know that some of these old videos still get some views. I don't do that kind of stuff on TH-cam anymore and have been specialized in diet and health for the past year. Thanks for commenting.
This is indeed a neat setup you figured out. I wonder however if recording on an external device like a Zoom H1n would be easier? Use the audio from gopro to sync and then mute that. A zoom have external mic input and headphones jacks also. Just my 2 cents
Thanks for the comment. I have a Zoom h6 and on occasion do just that, however it is much more convenient to have a decent audio track with the video, much easier to cut up in editing. I use the h6 mostly for background audio for aerial footage.
Thank you, easy to follow every step. Im waiting for the metal case now, order it a few days ago but I wanted to see how the final rig would look like. Greetings from Maria in Sweden.
Great video Mitch. I've recently been using the Osmo Action with a shotgun mic mounted to it in a very similar way to what you are doing here. My biggest complaint about the GoPro mic adapter is the size! The one for the Osmo Action is much smaller and fits tighter to the camera so it's more ergonomic IMHO. But either way, action cameras are great for what we do! Take care!
Thanks Kelly, this video is very old and we have come a long way in the past 2 years.... lol. I made an update to this showing the Ulanizi case with the adapter slot built in. That's what I use now.

Excellent! Thank you very much for this, as I have just bought my very first GoPro (Hero 7 Black) and need an external mic, as I film outdoors in sometimes, very windy conditions. I am going to use the exact same setup as you described, only problem, in the UK is the adapter is also out of stop with a 1 - 3 months waiting time. Either way, thanks for the video and the tips, appreciate it buddy, cheers Alan

Thanks a lot for this fantastic tutorial! I'd like to ask you a question: do you think that the Saramonic mic will work well in a mountain bike video? I don't know whether the wind would affect it too much, and if it would be capable of capturing the sound around me (not just my voice). Thanks a lot! LIKE!!!
To be honest, I don't use superview for vlogging and I never tried it in this case. Nor have I tried a variable nd filter in this cage, only uv filter that came with the cage. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
My cage, thumb screws and Saramonic mic are in transit from Amazon Australia. The GoPro mic adapter is proving hard to find here, no one has any stock. Have placed an order with my usual camera store, just have to wait. Unfortunately Amazon USA doesn’t ship these to Australia.
Very, very helpful. I'm new to making my own videos, and what to buy, the choices, options, new items available, obsolete items no longer available, 1080, 4k, filters and so on...it can all be intimidating. I want something I can use for all around, one size fits all. I'm not trying to win any "Good House Keeping Seal of Approval Award " and what you showed me here will do what I want done. Thanks so much. I'm subbed!
Thanks very much for the vlog rig video, very simple and neat setup. My Hero 7 Black should be here in a couple of days and will see how the audio sounds for my needs, if it isn’t satisfactory will definitely build up the same rig. Pity we have to use the GoPro “ brick” but from what I have seen there is no way around it. Also thanks for showing your setup to record this type of video, very informative.
Thanks Peter. I am generally happy with the GoPro audio and use it when I want to travel light. The external mike is a little better though and having the external adapter also allows me to plug in a wireless mike as well.
Thank you for this video I'm following you from Morocco I hope you explain to us problems go pro hero 7 white And Features Because I want to buy them and I hesitate
Thanks for watching. I don't think I would buy anything but the "black". It is more expensive but the stabilization is amazing and that is the most important thing to me. That us my opinion but I have never used the white, only seen reviews of it.
The usb plug from the mic adapter will keep the camera in the case if it gets loose but there is a new case from Ulanzi that I use now. I made a video on it last month
Thank you for posting the excellent tutorial video! I really love your simple setup and want to replicate it for my hiking videos. Do you know if there are dead cats available for the Saramonic SR-XM1 mic?
I'm seriously considering the Hero7 Black - I bought a 4K Action camera knockoff, and it's not too bad - but that hypersmooth stabilization on the 7 Black looks amazing!
@@OldGuyCarnivore I sure will! I didn't order a light, but I did order my cage in red. Snazzy! I also have a red gel skin for my Canon 80D. It's my Ontario Drone Imaging color scheme :)
Hi, I've seen quite a number of gopro vlog rig videos and I think yours is the cleanest and simplest! I'm wondering though...on the top of the cage there appear to be two 1/4-20 holes. You chose to put the thumbscrew in the hole nearest the edge, rather than the most central hole. It seems like the adapter would be more stable if the thumbscrew was more in the center of the cage, so I'm wondering if you've tried that or if there's a reason you chose the hole closest to the edge. Thanks for any input!
I don't think it makes any difference but the way I do it keeps the mic as far from the lens as possible. That matters if you use a dead cat (windscreen) which can show in the really wide angle view if it is in the field if view.
I was thinking about the same thing. Use middle hole and put the screw with velcro at middle of gopro mic adapter. So the adapter is more secure and balanced and mic is basically at the same place as you have it now.
I have both and of course the rode is better, but It is much bigger and can get in the shot if you have it mounted close to the camera. The Saramonic is not a bad mic for vlogging and the small size and mounting is why I use it in those situations.
It looks like the Thumb Screw is too big, it will block the slide up door. Do you have any recommendations for smaller size for screw that still work with this method??? i like to keep the sliding door more than the nod to tight the camera on the side. Thank you so much 👍👍 BTW, i watched a lots of VDO with this setup. I like your simplification the most. Thanksss
