A great technique I found helps with social media addiction is to do the following-
    1. Turn on screen recorder
    2. Go and browse all your normal socials, for as long as you like forgetting your recording
    3. Go and watch it back
It really hits home when you observe yourself and your interactions with social media.

Here's how to fix all three of those:
How to stop feeling guilty on social media: "Don't look for others' approval. Look for your worth in God."
How to stop feeling angry on social media: "Remember that social media has algorithms, and what you feel is likely not true."
How to stop feeling jealous on social media: "Turn your jealousy into motivation."
These three will help to stop those three emotions on social media.

There’s one thing I learned from a recent silent meditation retreat that I’m still using and find really helpful: instead of journaling pages and pages, write a haiku/ short poem about it. Just one word or a phrase that sums up the experience. It doesn’t have to rhyme or follow any kind of cadence rules (like a traditional haiku/ poem), but any word/ phrase that sums up the emotion/ experience. And that’s been really helpful as a journaling practice after meditating. Micro-journaling rocks!

    • @AdrianDanielGuard
      @AdrianDanielGuard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Can you give an example of a situation and a haiku?

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

@@AdrianDanielGuard they're all written after each meditation session, and they just capture the essence of the moment. I'm no poet, and it doesn't follow any poetry/ haiku rules, but here are a couple of examples:
      Stillness
      in the room
      Swirling
      in my mind
      Then a fleeting moment of
      Being.
      _
and another example after a full moon meditation:
      Moon shines bright
      legs asleep
      Mind drifts
      Heart full
      of gratitude
      _
Hope this helps! There's no need to censor yourself - just write whatever feels right. Flipping back through the pages now, I remember the flavour of each meditation session just from distilling it down to its essence. :)

I deleted social medias at the start of the academic year because I wanted to focus more on my studies. I replaced it with reading instead of journalling, and here's what changed for me:
    - I tried to go back to Instagram, deleted it again after a week. It had become boring
    - before, I didn't have any social skill. Also, I felt like people were draining my energy and I avoided people as much as I could. Now I have healthier friendships, and I feel more comfortable around people
    - I love reading, but I used to read one book/month and it wasn't enough. Now I'm reading up to 7 books/month
    - I became better at organizing too: I just have a to-do list for the week and I'm able to balance a part time job, a double bachelor, time with friends and time for me.
    - I became less hard on people and on me, less reactionary. I thought social medias were providing me with plenty of points of view but actually they amplify the "more angry" points of view so detaching from that helped me understand what was actually happening and form a better opinion on it
I highly suggest to give yourself a term for your social media pause, even just for the weekend. Social medias are time and energy consuming, more than you think

After a while you realize that social media is entirely repetitive as well, mostly on insta and tiktok. ( yes I know the ALGORITHM) But it’s all the same thing. Really attractive people that make you feel bad about how you look. Flexing “ successful “ 20 yr olds who post luxury cars and items; that as well makes you feel bad. Ads/sponsorships just more ads that never stop.

This is actually a genius idea. I’m especially fascinated by the fact that you remember so many of your days. I’ve often contemplated the fact that so many days are filled with little wins and losses and just important moments that make up life and the fact that most normal days are forgotten feels like a major loss of resolution in our memories. This idea sort of fixes that w little snapshots of a thought or feeling. Will definitely try this out!

100% 10/10 would recommend. I made a thick custom journal for this exact reason. Had to fill that anxious minute. Entries are dated and started wherever the last one left off. The writing is small and messy. Some days its a blurb. Some days im a basketcase and its a few pages.... Lookslike an artifact the autorities find when they search the home of a serial killer but with less actual phycho sh-t. Perfect place to slow my thoughts down and think about them.

This reminds me of when I went to rehab back in 2006 and got clean and sober. There weren't iPhones nor common social media back then (at least not like today where everything is accessible on a mobile device). My phone was taken away while in treatment so I wouldn't have had it anyway. But I did have a journal, and filled up pages and pages during that 30 days and for about 6 months when I came home and started attending 12-step meetings. Those journal writings are crazy to read now. I remember that it felt so good doing it back then. It helped me get out my thoughts, my doubts, my fears, my dreams and express my faith. I've stayed sober since then, but haven't journaled much since 2006. I've committed to staying off FB and IG for the month of January because it makes me feel inadequate. I think I'll try journaling again like I did back then for at least 30 months as a replacement. Thanks for the idea and sharing your experience!

About a month ago you talked about your 2 to-do lists and I gotta thank you so much for that!
For about 3 years I've felt overwhelmed all the time by everything I wanted to / had to do due to my depression and anxiety but since trying your method it's just been so much easier. I got more done in this past month than I have in the past 2 years! I've tried weekly to-do lists and scheduling evrything but it always just made me see a huge mountain of things to do that I didn't know how to climb but just having this minimal list for the day finally made me feel like this is doable and most of my days I get stuff from the optimal list done as well. This has truly changed my life and I can't tell you how grateful I am for this simple, yet so effective way of planning my days! Thank you so much!

I took a year long social media break from 2020 into 2021 and came back as I started freelancing again. After that year i realized that I had literally zero desire to use social media again (insta for me/I don’t consider TH-cam sm personally). I was happier when I wasn’t on it because I wasn’t seeing everyones fake life that they put on display and comparing it to my shitty circumstances. Each year I delete my social media platforms for about two months (one at the beginning of the year and another about its ending). It does really make me feel better and be more self-aware. I usually delete them because the news and terrible things happening around exhaust me. I do tend to misuse my time though by watching Netflix. However I've recently replaced it with watching useful stuff such as your videos, and learning more about my culture. I do hope to reach a place where I'm minimizing my screen time anyhow.

What works for me to spend less time on Instagram is an app that restricts insta usage. I set my daily limit to 30min and I also activated the 20 second delay. So whenever I open Instagram there'll be a 20 second delay to it, with a nice picture and a countdown and then I can click on a breathing exercise..or sth else or just watch the countdown go down and pause. For me, the delay helps me realise, that I opended it AGAIN! It's really good to check in with yourself and be like "do I really have to check it?" - nope :D

I deleted all socials except TH-cam and I used Tumblr on and off, mostly because they stopped letting me view content without an account which SUCKS.
I re-download twitter and Instagram for the same reason, twitter because I wanted to follow updates on the war in Ukraine and the situation in Taiwan (where my family is from). And Instagram was so I could get closer to an internet friend.
A major difference in the way I use it is that I don't follow my irls and shockingly that's made the experience so much more positive for me. I usually hear it the other way around but it made me realize a lot of stuff about the relationships I have with people if my mental health was so bad when I was predominantly following them. And I also don't follow influencers, only my favorite art and comic people and maybe one or two actors I like who don't post much. This time around, I have a much easier time controlling how I use social media as well, I learned a lot after not having it for almost a year. I'm probably gonna delete it again sometime soon but for now I'm having a genuinely fun time being able to keep up with my favorite artists and chat with my internet friend much easier. Also, I can more easily discover stuff that's happening in my city & it's actually getting me out of the house more! Lol. I still do wish that Instagram and Twitter wouldn't stop you from viewing posts without an account though. That's 80% of why I made accounts again and I guess that's their goal but it still sucks

This is such a good idea! I admit that I only put time limits to my Social Media apps, but the micro journaling starts to feel pretty great, ideas come up, reflection happens easier. It's also a good outlet to just let something out without burdening anyone with it. TY for the inspiration.

    Literally I'm gonna do itttttt
I always find myself in the urge to blow out what's going on in my life to others in messaging app.
While it's temporary relaxing but have to face the aftermath, like even if I forget on what I was mad at, other ppl remember everything about it and remind me every possible way which makes me feel bad, also I feel they start judging me or understanding me on that basis, while that was just one version of my thousands others :3
This microjournaling gotta help me to vent out without facing the consequences :3

I struggle a LOT with perfectionism. I'm 6 months into both quitting social media and quitting codependency, and I've had my fair share of bad days and relapses. The mindset that a bad day is just a bad day and the >70% thing really help. And it was also nice to realize that even when I do consume content, it is much better content (and when I relapse with codependency it's also much better situations). This helped me appreciate my progress a lot more, so thank you!!!

This is a great idea! I’ve been journaling and day planning when I can it’s helped, but with how society is now I think it’s impossible to sort of cut yourself off completely of social media and your phone. So it’s very smart to use your notes app, I usually use it for art ideas lol!
Something I struggle with is the balance between promoting my art and Etsy shop, talking with my online friends and then losing track of 2 hours I can’t get back. I wouldn’t say I’m crazy addicted because I delete the apps now after I’m done posting, it’s just hard to be disciplined about my time when I need to use them to check up on people or like I said to share my work. I have ways to fill that time anyways with IRL friends, working out and my art projects.
So I like your idea of a time limit, maybe there’s a parental blocker I could put in place 🤣 I get so distracted by memes and cat videos!
Social media has its uses, but boy is it numbing to the mind. I know it’s not healthy for any of us overall though, especially when algorithms can hurt our presence. I hate that social media almost requires us to be online 24/7. The only app I keep is TH-cam because I only use it when I’m working and will have it on in the background. TH-cam though I usually use to learn and motivate myself, so your channel has been an absolute gem to have.

I am at the point, where my phone is my tv and crafting outlet. I occasionally check social media and mostly only comment in my groups (but hardly go back for the response). It’s just there to share my story/opinion, whatever. I remember jumping at responses, waiting for follow ups. I enjoy the distancing now. I get on and read it like the newspaper and move on with my day (not daily). I have plenty of other things that are more beneficial to me and the family, that what friends/family are sharing online (they can just tell me in person or through texts).

I ended up doing something extremely similar to this without ever having watched this video. Unfortunately, my mental health had been lapsing for years and it truly felt like I was hoping for brighter days that would never come. Ironically enough I'm usually quite the optimist and I still couldn't help but feel this way. I have a great family and support system but that still wasn't really enough. The reasons for this were probably because of underlying childhood trauma that I had yet to address at that point though. All things considered, I've been through a lot. I'm only 20 years old, but there's a long story behind this short life! This isn't me gloating, but it was necessary to mention that as a precursor to my main point: we have been conditioned to turn a blind eye to the reality of our own identities. In a sense, that's the way that life has always been. However, social media is the most powerful device when it comes to instant gratification and feeding our ego. It single handedly enables us to skew the public's perception of us (and in many ways our own beliefs). Think about it like this, how many of your closest friends and family could accurately write your biography? If you're anything like me, chances are that none of them could really put your whole life together cohesively. Even if they wanted to, the details of other people's lives that we see and hear about are really just fractions of the entire truth. The catch is that not many people are broadcasting their failures on social media. We are pinning ourselves against our peers' inflated images (some of these people are nothing like they say they are). Let's get chemical! Social media takes advantage of the brain's reward pathways and the secretion of plenty of hormones, namely dopamine (which is what makes it so addicting!). Consequentially, we find ourselves feeling overly-entitled and performing more boring tasks is made more difficult because of social media's influence on our brain. Here's my 2 cents. Dialing down on social media use will not just automatically make life better, but it is one of the first steps for most people when it comes to becoming more attentive and "present" in their environment. Self-improvement is great and all, but what I've found is that plenty of people get stuck in what some like to call the "analysis paralysis" stage. Life is an iterative process.
Anywho, time to talk about my experience before I jump into some relevant takeaways! I had a composition book filled with a year's worth of data and records ranging from dream-journaling, personal goals, sleep tolerance experiments, and all sorts of other psychoanalytic/bizarre shit. I'm in college trying to get a bachelor's in electrical engineering, so I'm truly just a nerd who's horny for learning and collecting any form of data that I think can help me draw relevant conclusions about what I study. I had this library of information in hopes of lessening the impact of the mental gymnastics that the average person has to perform every day on behalf of how much conflicting information we swallow! Anyway, I uninstalled most of my social media and then I began journaling regularly. I thought that I would lose some of my touch with reality considering that social media was one of my only sources of getting updates about world events and other communities I'm interested in. I've always read consistently, but I stopped watching the news and keeping up with current events years ago. Anyway, when journaling I wouldn't pull any punches regardless of what I said or how I was feeling; the trick is to be unapologetically honest with yourself. Then, I would go through and review + revise and add updates in the margins according to what I was speaking on in each entry. I would let a month pass and then read over once more. To keep it real, some of what I read was more than disturbing. I noticed a lot of behaviors that I would have never really picked up on if I was just trying to think about myself on a regular day. I was extremely stressed, but I was actively researching and figuring myself out. TLDR; JOURNALING WILL TELL YOU A LOT ABOUT YOURSELF EVEN IF YOU VIEW YOURSELF AS LEVEL-HEADED. Regardless, I feel as though the benefits of quitting social media are actually MUCH LESS PRONOUNCED for those who it doesn't have much control over in the first place (such as myself). It hasn't really impacted me socially, I'm still a people-person and can make anybody and their granny grin from cheek to cheek. I've found that not having social media really doesn't really change a damn thing about you if you're comfortable with yourself. It was interesting to see how it affected you from the perspective of being an artist and creative mind so I genuinely appreciate this upload!
What I've had to learn the hard way is that even some of our most simple aspirations aren't attainable so long as we let ourselves fall under illusions of false-productivity. Isolating yourself from supernormal stimuli and social media is great and all, but the best changes that you can make in your life go much further than just stepping back from the digital world. Whether you want to be a free-thinker, an entrepreneur, a scientist, a whatever, to effectively change you must consistently develop your impressions of the world around you. There's a great Chinese proverb that explains what I'm trying to say quite simply: "The best time to plant a tree was years ago, the next best time is now." In other words, prepare to get your hands dirty. Dreams don't come true with a few glances over modern techniques. You can read Cal Newport; you can watch great content about encoding and improving your memory's capacity by improving cognitive load tolerance. Hell, you can even watch fake billionaire playboy extraordinaires penny-pinch by shamelessly advertising their overblown PDF to those who are just trying to do something meaningful with themselves. You can browse through all the information in the world, but none of that is enough. LIFE IS PRACTICE. To really become the change that you want to see, you must APPLY all the information that you have gathered while also constantly reviewing and refining it. Creating links between information by associating it with other adjacent topics and constantly layering your understanding is crucial to incorporating things into your long-term memory. I'm saying this in hopes that this will help inspire at least one person to take their first step towards attaining the lifestyle that they crave. Building a strong foundation of well-developed and relevant ideas is a necessity when it comes to giving yourself direction in life. How often do you achieve anything by not believing in yourself or what you've learned? Creating meaningful change in yourself can be extremely frustrating, it takes time. Every habit that you have is inadvertently reflective of what you really believe about yourself, it's almost like how you cast votes about who you'll become day by day. TLDR; get off your ass - the motivation that you're waiting for to make a change will never come if that's your excuse for not chasing what you want (WITHIN REASON). Get your feet wet; break a few eggs; bleed a little bit.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, I'm still young and remarkably dumb. At this point in my life, all I can say for certain is that I'll never genuinely know anything! I'm still in the process of figuring all of this out for myself, but I thought it'd just be nice to share!

I was in the same boat, social media makes me feel awful and wasted so much of my time. So I downloaded the kindle app on my phone because I love to read. Whenever I felt the need to scroll I would open the kindle app so I was still scrolling and entertaining my brain but in a much more productive and mentally healthy way. And it makes me feel productive because I'm actively working towards the goal of reading more. Not a fool proof method but it has really helped me.

I highly recommend the 'minimalist' app - it turns everything into a boring list of monochrome apps - no lovely interesting colours or logos to suck you in. It also had a timer warning before you open an app eg 5/10/15 minutes and a 'leave right now' option. Once your time it up a banner crossed the screen to let you know. You can only have 3 app names saved to your homescreen.
Another app I think might be good as a 'replacement app is the 'Intellect' app. You can do different 'courses' for areas you would like to improve like procrastination, overthinking, anxiety, goals, journalling, confidence etc. I expected to want to delete is after an hour but it has been seriously useful. May as well do something productive out of it if you're going to invest your time into an app. Social media allows you to invest but those companies (and influencers) get most of the return on YOUR investment.

I think part of the reason why it's more addictive even after you've been off it for a year is because it's so easily accessible and there is no accountability. With drinking or other drugs, the process to getting addicted again is a little bit longer and it affects your life a lot more, and kind of instantly. So after relapsing maybe a few times you become an occasional drinker/stoner. With social, it's so normal. Everyone else is doing it. You open an app and it's your friends doing all kinds of stuff, so you want to catch up on it without needing to talk to them. You start by this innocent avenue and start opening the app more often when ever there is notification. Then you fall back into it. In some ways it's like MDMA probably. MDMA can't be detected by people around you so you get hooked easily. Looks like I started journaling here instead of my notes app lol. Buh bye! And thanks for sharing!

I love this so much!! I love the ideas of microjournalling and making lists, however I probably have the opposite problem of starting lol I could write pages and pages about all the thoughts I have in a day.
The only thing I’m worried about starting this kind of challenge is that social media is probably what fills my social battery. I suck at talking to people irl and over the summer it’s almost impossible since I don’t really leave my house. Ironically I’m an extrovert so my mental health gets so bad after not interacting with people.. I’ll probably just try to use social media 1x a week instead of completely quitting.
