Knowing he was an orphan makes this song hit so much harder. Poor beautiful soul just wanted a mom and dad.

Basho himself was orphaned as an infant. This song expresses a longing to be reunited with his parents.
The liner notes dedicate the song as follows: “To all the little orphans of the rainbow; and may they find the gentle hand of the Creator.”

    Lyrics
Born for love and nothing more
Given away 'cause we was poor
Will you wait, will you wait for me?
My hair was black and my eyes was bright
Never gave pleasure to my parent's sight
Will you wait, will you wait for me?
I'll be waiting by the river my love
I'll be waiting by the trees
Will you wait, will you wait for me?
My face was brown and my hair was long

I first heard this way back in the 1970s (thank you for the correction) when I hitchhiked around the U.S. mostly out west and lived almost exclusively in the American wilderness eating wild edible plants and early on fish I would catch with a rod I carried with me, a tube tent and a good backpack. I was like a gypsy with Guatemalan clothes and feathers in my hair, a colorful bandana on my head and I wore crystal jewelry I made myself from rockhound finds (my Shawnee and choctaw blood) It has a special meaning to me for the two rare times baby does slept next to me but just distant on cold nights in the forest I even petted one, who cuddled up to me to stay warm. I think they themselves may have been orphans.

Never (making an “ay” sound as in gave, not a “eh” sound as in can) ...(making a “zh” sound as in pleasure, not a “ch” sound as in catch)...(the “ur” sound in pleasure is debatable because it could sound like up, though I’m pretty sure he pronounces the R pretty clearly) to my parents (sight or side? Idk).
Being an orphan given away he must not have given pleasure to his parents sight. Not enough to keep him. Maybe at no fault of his own. Maybe it was there own shame or remorse for knowing they couldn’t take care of him that brought them displeasure when they saw him. Regardless...I’m certain those are the lyrics.
