    Oscar Isaac is one of the few actors nowadays who is not the 'Hollywood' type. He's smart and purely talented, and he got to where he is right now not because of looks or brand alone, but because of his hard work, skill, dedication and determination. It's safe to say that the successful career and bright future he's enjoying now is one that he truly deserves.

    I'm so happy that Oscar Isaac is FINALLY getting the recognition he's deserved for an extremely long time!! Agora (first time I began to pay attention to his work), Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year, Ex Machina, Show Me A Hero (my favorite performance by him so far), and now Star Wars and X-Men: Apocalypse -- Isaac has some serious talent on and off screen, and it's about time critics and fans acknowledge what he has to bring :)

    I love how people think this is an interview and they keep bitching at David to keep quiet. Earth to haters; it's not an interview. It's a chat. Watch Dick Cavett if you've never seen anything like this before.
    This is an awesome series and I never miss it as it is so much more enlightening than a trite and predictable interview often is,

    • @deathfromabove77
      @deathfromabove77 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bullshit. you don't know what you're talking about..calling it a "chat" doesn't hide the fact that "David" is a rubbish interviewer..the subject of the "chat" is Oscar Isaacs,not the interviewer..we're not interested in his opinion, or what he presumes his subject's opinion is, regardless of whether it is a "chat" or not..the interruption, the inane banter, the "leading" the subject into answers/opinions...pure amateur stuff..nothing enlightening about it..you just irritate the audience and most importantly the subject...the great interviewers let the subjects talk : David Frost, Melvyn Bragg, Parkingon..even knowledgeable film critics who interview such as Leonard Maltin allow their interviewees to talk..that's what we want to hear

    • @dp30
      @dp30  10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      deathfromabove77 You are completely within your rights to dislike me and my interviewing style. Just so you know, I am good with Parkington, a student of Melvyn Bragg (though most of his interviews were highly edited) and here in America, a great fan of David Suskind, Jack Paar (what I have been able to see of him), and a guy named Greg Jackson.
      Sometimes, I probably do talk too much. Sometimes, too little. But the whole effort on my side is to get to the place where we are having - whether you think it's some cop out or not - a conversation. And all I get to walk away with, in the end, is what happens in that brief period. I am always thrilled to get a handful of moments that touch intimacy. Oscar happens to be pretty open. So I was quite happy with the chat. I felt like at the end, I (and the viewer) really knew something about who the guy is.
      If that didn't work for you, all I can do is say, "Sorry" and hope you find interviews you like better.

    • @Axeyard
      @Axeyard 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In an ideal world, I'd like to just hear the interviewee speak, nothing else. I think that's the bottom line, for most viewers.
      But that's not possible, so some direction has to be set: via questions.
      In your case, as you are not fully miked and we never see you, all we know of you are the quick bursts of ambient-miked speech: thus you have to operate in a very narrow band, in terms of self-expression - otherwise it can easily sound intrusive.
      I know it's a hard balance to reach, especially with the adrenalin pumping from being face-to-face with individuals who have keen perceptions and charisma galore.
      My suggestion, if you will pardon my directness, is that maybe if you could speak a little slower, to be more in keeping with the lower decibel level on your lines and also so that the occasional hyper edge is softened.
      I think the interviewer here reacts well, but he's just a bit jumpy when you ratchet up the speed of your reactions.
      Just my take. Thanks for the good work.

      Axeyard Oops, should have typed "interviewee," not "interviewer," in the second para from the end.

      +Roger Wilco As a journalist, I can attest to that. Some interviews are easier than others, and Oscar seems like a great interview. He's articulate and introspective and talks openly. I've had some interviews where my subject gives short or one-sentence answers, so I have to find other ways to get them to talk more. A couple of things I learned in j-school are, to ask open-ended questions rather than yes/no questions. The latter is setting you up for a dead-end if the conversation doesn't already have some momentum. You also shouldn't lead the subject with how you word your questions, hoping for a specific answer, because that injects a bit of bias into things. I noticed that the interviewer here asked Oscar if the happiest part of working on Llewyn Davis was performing for live audiences, which sort of sets things up for a 'yes' answer. I guess if the previous question alludes to that, then it's fine to confirm by asking that way, but if the interviewer didn't talk to Oscar about that subject before the recorded interview or it was a standalone question, a better route might be to ask what his favorite aspect of working on the movie was. It can be tempting to lead subjects who don't open up as much as Oscar did though, because asking an open-ended question might lead to an, 'I don't know. I never really thought about it' sort of answer. I know I prefer a bit of framing when people ask me open-ended questions. Another tip I also learned: know the power of silence. It's tempting to want to fill awkward silence by asking more questions, but your subject probably finds the silence awkward, too, and if you wait long enough, they'll talk more to end the silence.

What an incredible human being. I'd love to be friends or cousins with him or something and just shoot the shit like this video basically did. I'll be keeping my eye on him. For sure. - Also. Big props to the interviewer of this! I'm now in love with a normal conversation and understanding and respect for the actor and journalist. Most interviews with celebrities are nothing but the interviewer kissing the actors ass the entire time and asking incredibly dull questions that they've probably answered 6,000 already. I'm sure this was refreshing for Oscar to do. Really enjoyed the video. Subbed.

    I find it funny how divided opinion is about the interviewer in the comments. As a journalist myself, I don't get why people are so bent up over the interviewer here. As a journalist myself, who has taken classes on how to interview, this wasn't bad. Sure, some questions could have been more creative, and sometimes a question would be leading, but overall, this is what you want during an interview-a conversation. This is what interviews I have done might sound like if left unedited and posted online. It looks like this was done in one continuous shot. If you do that, you're going to hear the interviewer asking questions. Also, banter with an interview subject is a matter of balance. If done right, it keeps the mood light when appropriate and can put a subject at ease. If you don't banter as all, the atmosphere of the interview might feel more tense and the subject might not speak as openly because they're uncomfortable or nervous. Banter isn't always perfect, but who hasn't had a 'Why did I say that? That sounded dumb' moment? There's also a balance to be had between asking creative questions and asking some standard questions, because standard questions become standard for a reason-they're the things you instinctively want to know about a subject after doing background research on them, so you think of them first while compiling your list of interview questions. I have a tendency to over-think interview questions, so I know there's sometimes value in simplicity. Speaking as someone recently out of j-school and who has done it numerous times, there's an art to interviewing, and it takes practice to hone, so try not to be too rough on interviewers. (That said, there are some that do just suck no matter how you look at it. They need to revisit a textbook. This guy isn't one of them though, imho. He's not Barbara Walters [that's a high bar, imo], but he's decent enough.)

      The interviewer was asking what we were all wondering-- which is whether it was "inner city" in the same sense the rest of the country knows it, or whether it was this nice Florida area's version, which may have been white with a couple wealthy Puerto Rican kids. Those are two different places and it was a reasonable question.

    • @tuanjim799
      @tuanjim799 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol the dumbest part wasn't even that question, but just the fact that he was almost acting like no part of Miami, Florida is "rough" or "ghetto" or (as Isaac said) "inner-city." Miami has always had some of the toughest, craziest fuckin neighborhoods. South Florida in general has some really crazy pockets. And much like LA (and lots of cities for that matter), the craziest neighborhoods are sometimes only a short distance away from really upscale areas.

    I’m sorry in advance, not really, as some will disagree, bu this is one of the worst interviews I’ve ever seen!!! Of Oscar keeps it interesting, but these are some of the “cheesiest” questions!!! Even Oscar almost immediately asks “what people?”, when the interviewer inserted the notion that “people would want to keep you in Hollywood...”. It’s like the interviewer reflects what Oscar eluded to almost half way in the interview, he tried to “dictate” too much. So may of his questions could have been asked much more insightfully with and less callousness. Towards the end, the interviewer finishes off his question with “is that a moment of sheer joy?” He injects his own answer in the question! Let the Principle tell us what was like... He did this often. Anyone out there wanting to do interviews this is how you don’t do it. And for a half hour interview, not to have a second camera, at least a BTS (Behind The Set/Scene) is dragging visually. Wanna hear how an interview is done, just Google Terri Gross from NPRs Fresh Air. The quintessential of that craft!
