Pastrami on rye from Katz’s is my moat memorable meal from my trip to NY. When they gave me a little taste of pastrami whilst waiting my mind was blown!

This makes me think of a story Jacob Richler tells of being a kid in Montreal. His dad was the famous writer Mordecai Richler. Dad was also a fan of anything deli. He used to send one of the kids down to Schwartz's in Montreal by cab. He would have pre-ordered the food and the kid paid the guy and got the food. Mordecai always ordered two medium fat Montreal smoked meat sandwiches (similar to Schwartz's pastrami) and an order of pickles for himself. The lucky kid who did the cab run (this was long before Uber or Lyft) collected the loot and was rewarded with an extra sandwich for himself.

I m from Hong Kong. One day before I die, I must come to your place and try this pastrami sandwich, in addition to your other dishes.

If only Frank Costanza (Seinfeld episode) had done this with the meat in his Korea days, and spiced it according to Katz's recipe, the men would have thrived on a taste of beef from back home in NYC.

To the viewers- which is better of the two delis, Katz's in NYC or Schwartz's in Montreal?

I’ve been to both now. I’m from Toronto. I’m going to say Katz is better. It has a more spicy tangy taste to the meat. The cuts are also much thicker. Schwartz is still amazing though. Best in Canada for sure. There are a few in Toronto that are pretty good as well.

Does anyone order a variation on the pastrami on rye sandwich? I heard of a guy doing half pastrami, half chicken liver.

Nothing in California even comes close to Katz's pastrami.

The situation was the same in Toronto Canada. I heard of someone who took matters into his own hand. He bought a steam table and knife set and cutting board similar to Katz's. He then traveled to Montreal each month to pick up a few entire Montreal smoked briskets from Abie's. He also got the rye bread, mustard, pickles, karnatzel, etc. Back in Toronto he would invite family and friends over for sandwich party.
