      @@TheRCNetwork Yep. Works for a couple runs, problem then returns. I also tried new O-rings (green slimed of course) last rebuild as well. Shafts are nice & straight, and springs are installed properly (rings don't bind on the shock bodies). It's only a slight annoyance - better then having puddles of shock oil everywhere like the Axial shocks. ;-D

    They are both good as far as the axles, portals or not. One thing I notice with my trx4 portals is my clearance is awesome with almost no torque twist and I can lower ride with body height shock lengthens etc. for my 1.9 wraith I installed BIC pen springs inside the shock shafts under the pistons. Used LOSI 100wt oil. I experience little torque twist as they are terrible out of the box. I’m super happy with that set up as well. Need to be on both sides of the fence to appreciate both designs. Thx again for your video and thx for selling me into the kit mog for axial!😂

    Donnie Branhams FC taught me the trick to portals under an Axial. Droop the suspension and custom panhard/steering links to keep the geometry correct. He used modified Gmade R1s since that's what was available. Since I got it at KnK last year, it has had TRX axles and now VP portals. Works great even with the weight of the body if driven in a scale manner. It certainly is no comp truck, except C0. The VPs are nice and heavy, and have optional overdrive. So you will get added performance in your pursuit of scale realism just as I did.

    I am new to the crawler world but I think that a lot has to do with the nature of the driver's line choice. Such as how or the which way they choose to attack an obstacle. I just picked up an Axial SCX10 CRC Unlimited edition and it has impressed me so far! I would like to do a few things to improve its performance. Keep up the awesome video's and I enjoy watching them.

    I want to build a kit with my son soon. We built a Tamiya buggy a while back but I saw this as well as other crawlers. The kit without anything is $299. I’d need a $20 brushed esc, $10 crawler motor and another servo and receiver so all in using the radio I have it would only be $50-60 more than the Redcat Gen8 ready to go (with a crappy radio)

I have been looking for a kit to build and crawling is something I want to get back into. I got away from it in the early 2000 because the trucks looked stupid to me. Now they are like the real deal and what people are doing to there rigs is crazy. Thanks agin and you got a new Subscriber. And yes I'm a XMAXX send it guy.

  • @addiemonsterrc3990
    @addiemonsterrc3990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I love portals, they're a neat addition to tiny trucks but like you, I agree they aren't "better". They raise your center of gravity, alter your gearing and add more failure points - so they aren't an "upgrade" so much as a different school of thought when it comes to approaching your favorite trail spots. I recently sold my Axial Cherokee to fund a Gen8 and I couldn't be happier, but that has more to do with the looks of the Redcat than the performance (which is also awesome!).
    Should you get portals or a portal'd truck? Sure! Will they make you a better driver? Maybe?!?!?!?! Probably not. Only you or Pat Morita can bring the best you to the surface, and with Miyagi-san no longer with us, looks like it's up to you, bud.

And do offer better ground clearance. But like you said, pick a good line and drive it. I just don't think they are the "end all be all" either. Portals have the advantage that you do not brake in the mud with the diff housing. In the wet field you do not need tires as big as a tractor. big tractor tires are hopping at a higher speed. on the steep slope you are absolutely right, because the center of gravity is higher.

    I think they have their place, like on vehicles that actually have them in real life if you're going down the scale route, but if you don't care and not into the scale look, then it's personal choice, if you have the spare cash and they work then go for it, if you can make your truck do things that you want without them, then that's cool too. It would be boring if we were all the same.

    I'm a huge fan accuracy so I would only put portals on a Uni or I would love to build an H1 but that's independent suspension. I started with RC4WD so I believe I may have ruined plastic axles for myself but I really want something I can bounce around without worrying if I'm going to crack a housing, do you think an Axial would be a better purchase for fun sake?

      For sheer fun and for keeping it together, Axial's are hard to beat for durability. TRX4 is a great choice too.

    Well, portals pop up quite a bit in full sized off roaders in the aftermarket. BUT as you say, they aren't the end all and be all. They have uses - pending on application of course. :-) I'm indifferent - just run your fav piece of kit, portals or not. I'm not starting anything - just agreeing. :-)

    The build is great!!! What about spraying a matt finish over those body parts that are not the main cab? They look a bit too shiny for my taste.

      I'd considered matte on the whole thing. Still might!

    I would like to see portals on that set up. They are a little bit pricey. I noticed a lot of flex in the suspension are the spring a softer set than the normal scx10 2 rigs? By the way another great review thanks for all the info.

      Can't say, I don't think they're softer, but I'll double check. Portals have been ordered!

    I have an scx10ii non portal and a Gen8 with love them both. In some cases portals have an advantage. But my axial kills trx4s all day. Again love all my rigs. Even my twin hammes.

    German truck. German helmet. For you know scale people. They need to make military unimogs for historical reference in all them scale military rc builds. What length are the axles? Can any of the portal options in axcial lineup that fit? Would it be better to build a body off a frame with portals or options for portals if the say, capra axles don’t fit? I heard vanquish, are they giving portal options?

    !!!O.M.G!!! Becky!!!...I can't believe you'd even ask if portals are better than regular axles!
    Hahaha
    I use to be a really good driver when I had one crawler....now I'm just "ok".
    Portals make an "ok" driver(like me)look good and a good driver look great...that's everything else being equal. Of course you have to deal with the higher center-of-gravity.
    As of this moment , personally or only have one non-portal rig and that's King Midas 6x6 , it's my old AX10 comp rig. Everything else is TRX4's and a CFX-W with Deadloc RC Portals....oh....and my BC8 Mammoth.
    See you at Pro-line By The Fire.

    Like you I feel for scale accuracy on that truck portals are a must. However personally I have never them to better on the trail then regular axles. Anywhere my truck with portals got my trucks with standard axles were able to get.

    I find portals way overhyped. Yes, they give you ground clearance but they also higher your COG which is quite problematic ;) I believe the rig should be designed and built specifically for portals. I'm not fan of putting them everywhere apart from really scale builds like g-klasse, humvee, unimogs etc or heavily modified cars (I've seen some Patrol's with portals ;) ).
    With love from Poland

    Just ordered mine last night. Hated the look of them at first. Then i went to my first comp and a few people were using them, and it quickly grew on me. I need an axial anyway own 3 trx4s and a gen8.
    Quick question? See any possible options to get the body posts on? Id like to get a 2door wrangler body.

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd have to take a closer look, you could probably just use the existing shock hoops to put traditional posts on.

    So Axial made a pretty large truck smaller than a Jeep Cherokee... You could put a Jeep in the bed of an Unimog. Of all the vehicles that should have portal axles, the Unimog and Hummer are pretty much it. Granted Mercedes put portals on the 6x6 G63.

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the Unimog variant. This era, they weren't that big.

    Well I have been in the rc hobby for 25 years now and Axial started this class/cars on 2005 there where the absolute top at the time today I have only the trx4, and in mij opinion the trx4 has a few advantages to Axial scx10 the first plus the steering bar it sits very high with Axial in the past that was the first thing you hit with crawling second the trx4 has ground clearance because it's a u turn design parts after parts available worldwide differentials locking system is also a plus in mij personal opinion today the trx4 is the absolute top of the bil, but Axial is nr 2 in mij eyes still I will buy the honcho v2 or this umg10 kit
