Thank you Tucker for taking the time and effort to share these examples with us all.

    Something worth trying which may reduce the chance of you hand getting reefed back: I love nil wind flying and fly a heavy 11yr old wing, so I experimented with all kinds of launch setups and methods and the easiest I found involves a change of hand position. Instead of hands back and low like we are taught, I hold my A riser mallions at the point they sit in flight, including lifting the swing arms. This has the benefit of: simplifying the process, ensuring a better upper body position (thrust angle), lifting the wing nose earlier, giving you better feeling on pressure differences earlier, and if your risers get reefed back like ol' mate you got more time to react and let go. The other change in setup is I don't "v" or "moon" my wing, I lay it down fairly close to flight profile.

    • @tiagooliveira95
      @tiagooliveira95 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kalmanroland I see your point, here we can't legally fly below 300m or below 50m above the water, just like regular traffic, I'm pretty sure that there is no power line 50m heigh. So what's the point of having the balls? we could just get rid of all the balls, right? No, because with authorization from the agency that controls the airspace, we pilots, can fly this low.

    I think the possibility of engine failure on any powered flying machine is always a real possibility. That is what Dan Gryder and Cory Robin and Juan Browne and Scott Perdue have been preaching to GA pilots over the last year. When things go wrong practice things going wrong and then you will be more prepared with an upset.

    • @DwayneCrow
      @DwayneCrow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The difference in GA and paramotors is that with GA aircraft, you might have an engine failure some day, with paramotors you WILL have an engine failure some day. Fortunately there's a lot more suitable landing spots for paramotors, it's easy to keep one underneath you if you just will.

    I'm due for an x-ray on my knuckle tomorrow morning from prop strike. My motor manufacture did not weave the net all the way to the bottom, so there is a gap either side down low. I was coming in hard and fast due to a low fck up, entered full flair so my hands are low and in front the gaps in the net. On impact my right hand went back through the gap and into the prop, made one hell of a donk noise. I was saved from the worst of it as it is a clutched engine already spooling down and the prop sliced through a carbon spar before hitting me so that took a lot of energy out. I now have weaved a new net section and cable tied it in place until I get time to make a full new net.
    Check ya nets.

    I'm from SA and I lost two fingers whilst starting my brand new motor for the first time. Following the manuals instructions I applied full throttle and pulled the starter. Surprisingly the motor started instantly and revved up to 10000 rpm instantly. It took me completely by surprise. It took off and knocked me on my back, landing on my chest. The prop was dangerously close to my face so I instinctively pushed it away with my right hand whilst still maintaining full throttle with my left hand. Unfortunately my fingers went over the cage and ended up being severed by the prop. It was only then that I realized I was still holding the throttle and let go. Only afterwards I discovered that it wasn't necessary to maintain full throttle when starting the motor in SA. (south Africa)

    I've been avoiding water like the plague, since the couple times I've ended up with my trike wheels pointed the wrong way (To the sky, lol - thanks to insane tree rotor), I was completely unable to free myself from the harness with my weight hanging on it! Luckily both times, people were there to help! I couldn't imagine going into water and having to undo the 3 locking points on my leg and chest restraints. I have limited lung capacity due to asthma (and being an idiot as a youngster, smoking) - I wouldn't stand much of a chance in that scenario. NOPE, and NOPE!! Water is not for me! I'll wheel-drag a field! :)

    That powered inflation is the prime cause . That wing needs to be above you and flying before you add power. Only hold brake with 1 finger so it can easily get pulled free.
    I'm on the maverick and hand was pulled into cage hoop and bust a knuckle.
    Not sure how long people's arms are but to get hand pulled into prop seems impossible on the maverick as the prop is way back.

    Just a week ago I was doing my first ever Take-off and circuit. I got off the ground successfully, and about 100 foot up as I got into the seat, I lost all comms with my instructor. WTF do I do now? Well, I did what my instructor had briefed me to do, and flew the glider. I was in awe at the view as I climbed out on the base leg, flew the downwind leg, and by now the Instructor had realised We couldn't communicate by radio, and he got out the ping pong bats. I was at about 500' by now and too high for the field, so I went around the circuit again, reducing the throttle and performing S turns to lose height, turning into final and descending, cutting the motor at about 75' and coming in to land safely.
    Proper training and understanding what to do is so important in Paramotoring. I'm stoked, and can't wait to fly again weather permitting. I've bought my own Helmet, headphones and radio, and put a deposit on a wing. And as soon as my Passport Arrives, I'm off to the Paralab in Moron de La Frontera Spain, to complete my training.
    Paramotoring is the best thing to happen to me in the last 20 years!

    Use the water rule. If you don't have floatation don't fly over water. If you encounter an amputation of any kind, find the severed body part, put it in a clean plastic bag and pack the whole thing on ice before going to the ER with it.

    I refuse to do power forwards after I had a similar incident. Luckily it only caught the d-lines and not the brakes. It reeled my brand new MacPara Colorado into the prop and cut it to ribbons. No injuries, but the wing was totaled. I was also flying a Pluma at the time. The frame is durable, but the cage is pretty flimsy. It can flex quite a bit during inflation if you aren't holding your arms out far enough to take some of the stress off of the cage.
    I'm currently flying a Parajet. The cage is much stronger, but I'm still reluctant to try it again. Especially after watching this video.
    The most I'll do is blow a bunch of air over the wing just before starting my run. Then I'm off power until the wing is up.

    Hey Tucker and other pilots I just had a great idea to avoid the lost fingers problem! You should look into rope cutters for prop shafts. they are designed for boat prop shafts, because when a motor boat gets a mooring line or fishing net wrapped around the propeller, it can damage the prop shaft, the bearing and prop shaft seal, and that leaves the boat with an engine that cannot run and a water leak that is impossible to fix in the sea, and can sink the boat quickly.
    Maybe one rope cutter could fit your paramotor prop shaft and work with your lines? Or maybe find someone to design and build one for you.

    • @jamesk3914

      That might work well if you're on the ground, but would you want your lines being cut while you're high in the air?

    • @niconico3907
      @niconico3907 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jamesk3914 there is less reasons to have slack lines that go in the prop in the air that on the ground.
      And if a line goes in the prop anyway I would prefer if its cut than pulled tight around the prop. Because you can keep flying with 1 or 2 lines cut, but not with a line pulled tight.

    • @GHT007
      @GHT007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same thing. I guess in most cases it's the brake lines which are more slack than the A-C's(D's) so even if you did catch them mid flight in the prop (far less likely during flight) and have them severed you can actually still steer with the rear lines to get yourself back down safely. Far better having the break lines severed and be away from the prop shaft than be pulled into a hard turn that you'll never recover from.

  • @conniepoo
    @conniepoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would say the finger chopping is easily avoidable, inspect your cage, your netting, and when you are clipping in to make sure you lay out your lines correctly, swing them out when holding the risers, and make sure none are snagging on anything on the ground. Also always face away from the wing, even the slightest twist of the body before or during inflation has caused lines to get sucked into my prop before.

    • @murdockdacoon2055
      @murdockdacoon2055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I concur. Also, pwr inflations should be performed in the following sequence. 1 walk fwd gently until lines are tugging slightly and you can see them cascade so you know they are correct with no twists or line overs. 2. take 2 steps back to ensure lines are now hanging down and away from prop before revving. 3. bring power up slowly and smoothly to about 5200rpm and hold that for 20 seconds or so. 4. chop throttle and push fwd with A's and bring the wing up. 5. only when wing is overhead do you get back on power and start your lean back and brake inputs. follow these steps and you are likely to have success on every fwd launch. also know when to call it off. never hesitate to hit that kill switch if something does not feel right or you feel like you should be airborne already but you are out of legs. there's a good chance you are downwind and gonna eat dirt.
