    I love Hannah’s climbing, I agree with Louis she is really strong! When I watch her videos I can’t believe how strong she is!!! With hannah, it’s definitely mind over matter, she over thinks everything!? That can be an asset with route reading! She has all the best elements! When I watch her, I wish she wouldn’t over think things! She should just go for it! I feel she would be a much better climber, in fact! If she applied mind over matter, she would most definitely be competing to a higher standard!! #IloveHannahsclimbing practice practice practice 😅 Hannah your an awesome climber!! • @mapler90210
    @mapler90210 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you, Louis and Hannah! I used to think dynamic movements were about having the confidence and strength to actually leave the wall and then catch yourself back on, so I was afraid to do anything dynamically more than a move or two above the ground. These drills, and especially being able to see the (astoundingly fast!) progression Hannah made toward moving dynamically, really helped me see how being dynamic in many situations can actually be more reliable and cover some of my weaknesses where I'd always assumed it would highlight them. I've been working on these skills for a few weeks now and have already gone from "Occasionally able to send a V3 that suits me particularly well" to "Sent all of the V3s available and getting further on the V4s with each session"
    Also really love the positivity in this video! I climb because it makes me happy and seeing others train for new challenges while still being so joyful is incredibly motivating.

One small suggestion, i would love to be able to see the beta/holds/boulder whilst you are discussing them, we as a viewer often only get to see a few holds instead of a full on view and it can be frustrating because I want to see what your talking about :) so maybe zoom out a bit, or give a us a few close up shots of the holds or something to include us in the conversation? Does anybody have advice on fear of heights? I've had pretty brutal fear of heights before starting climbing, but it has improved in a good way since then. Still I can feel that in some cases, the fear holds me back, for example when I don't have a stable foot hold very high up. I've heard advice "like just go for it, you will not fall" or quite the opposite "if you fall off, you will see that it's not that bad". These don't really work for me, because when the fear creeps in, I tend to tense up and shake, and I can feel that it's dangerous to continue.

    • @NestorMandela
      @NestorMandela 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's super normal and pretty useful to survive! I suffer from fear of heights too and maybe some of the things that I do can help you:
      - Don't feel bad about being anxious or afraid just be aware of it.
      - Use any relaxation technique that works on you (e.g. diaphragm breathing)
      - Try to rationalize the risk: is it an awkward position to fall from? super high? nasty volume in your fall trajectory? low percentage move?
      - Now, minimize those risk: get a spotter, touch the next hold to see if it's good, check the fall, try a similar move in a less frightning position...
      - Climb there, deep breath, count down and GO! It doesn't matter if you stick it, just force yourself to move and not just let go and jump down
      - Analyze how you feel, breath. Was the fall that bad? Was the move that difficult? The hold that slippery?
      - If you really think you can hurt yourself, stop. Try an easier one. If not, try a few more goes but not too much to avoid stress overload
      - If you stick it, pat yourself in the back and... do it again! This will boost your confidence and train your brain that the thing that scared you no longer does.
      - ??????
      - Profit!

      If bouldering; pick a route where falling is safe, before you get to the high crux, jump off, repeat until happy, repeat at higher increments. A coach would be very helpful.

    • @slbaaron
      @slbaaron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure how to beat Slab fears because even after getting to V4/V5 range, I'm still absolutely a nerve wrack when I get on hard, tall slab problems where the fall path is riddled with volumes and sharp holds (and the wall scrapes). On the other hand, I wouldn't think twice to go for a big move on overhang close to the top, 15ft off the ground. So if it's the height you are afraid of, it's all about exposure. When I started climbing, I'm equally scared of slabs and heights and didn't have a distinction between them. What happened to me was more passive than active. I'm naturally competitive. I go for moves that I can't make. And early on I fell from very high up a few times. It's exactly like people say -> it isn't that bad. But it was a process. In fact, it was a lil bad the first time because my whole body was tense when I fell and it hurt (groin the first couple of times, then spine another time), especially being 180lbs myself. Eventually I learnt to be (and mentally OK with being) loose. Nowadays when I come off the wall I instantly go from all the core tension staying on the wall to extremely loose with a lil orienting myself for the fall and 99% of time there's no pain involved. I no longer understand the phrase "brace for impact", it really should be "relax for impact", lol.
      I understand your question is that you don't have the natural push to experience it passively like I did. For which I highly recommend just practicing jumping off higher and higher as a drill in of itself. You should jump to the point where downclimb ALWAYS seem like a chore. The only reason for downclimb should be for 1. extra endurance practice or 2. health conscious for saving the joints as much as possible. And for no.2, if you always land and roll on your back, it isn't that bad for joints to begin with. It should contain no part of "because I'm scared to jump down". I'd say a big part is many beginners "think" they know how to land, but as my past experience indicates, if you are tense, you will experience some hurt. And if you are hurt (even minorly), you will fear and want to avoid it. It's a vicious cycle that every climber must eventually break out of. Keep jumping until you land so nice and comfortably that you almost want to go straight into a nap - I really do, especially when I just gave it 100%.
      I say this but there are some problems which end *ridiculously* high. I'd never recommend anyone practice jumping off above 15ft (and I'm talking about the hold your arms are on, not feet to ground), because while those can be practiced to reduce injury risk significantly, the risk is still ever present. I'd say practice until you are comfortable jumping off up to 15ft hand holds off the ground is more then good enough :)
