    The South African accent is one of my favorites right now and has been for the last five years or so since I saw Sharlto on screen for the first time in District nine. Ever since then I've been fine tuning my South African, he is a special dude and I would like to have a South African accent conversation with him.

      I lived in New Zealand for a couple years and I always thought the Kiwi and South African accents were oddly similar for some reason...?

    I love this guy, especially when he speaks with a heavy Afrikaaner accent. His funniest quote was in Elysium when he says everything will be 'lekker'. This always cracks me up because lekker, though spelled slightly different in my language(which isn't Dutch) is pronounced and used the exact same way.

  • @shisuiuchiha480

    lol im from South Africa as well and id say he himself actually speaks in a South African accent... and the one he acts in is an Afrikaans accent not an overall South African... the most predominant one between whites and blacks is the one he naturally speaks... the Afrikaans accent is for a specific group of white people who are of Dutch origin... but anyways we still love the accent!!! its very strong though as he said so we can easily tell its from here...
    Letter from a South African. Peace and Love.

      Hi. What about his accent in District 9. I find it quite different from the one he's using in the interview. Any thoughts?

    • @shaunmatthews6889
      @shaunmatthews6889 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Typically The further you move away from the coast the stronger the South African accent. His normal accent is typically Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth etc. The accent from District 9 is more maybe Pretoria, Brakpan etc.. but it's more complicated than that. The country has 11 official languages and even more dialects so regions have their own accents as with most countries in the world..

      To me (an American expat) the Afrikaans accent is very distinct from the more "British" South African accent which to me sounds more like a New Zealand accent than anything...?

    Yeah so true, going for something weaker and softer is way harder. But the risk of going hard is that it sounds silly and people think you're making it as a joke. Which you could be, but to really practice it you need to start there. Some actually do have stronger ones so it's fine, just harder for people to accept as serious. I love his accent in District 9 and Afrikaans in general.

    Jacket should be UNBUTTONED. Other than politicians, most men don't button their jacket on a suit. That's a 'Hollywood' costumers' trend that's been around for some time - and it's largely incorrect per any era.
    In the 70's the OPEN look was in - shirt unbuttoned, jacket unbuttoned - letting it all hang out. That was the look.
