The play clock started running with 2:41 left…. Detroit should of had to run a play by 2:01 or face a delay of game… That’s why Staley didn’t call TO 🤔I think
Staley is a lot better than coaches like Hackett, McDaniels, and Patricia, with a decent win-loss record, but he's still in that category of "horrendous game management", and considering how many times he's been on Dumb Decisions, age and experience don't seem to be helping with that.
You're ignoring that the Chargers did get the Lions to 4th down with 1:47 remaining and the Chargers had one timeout left. Conventional wisdom would say Lions kick fg then Chargers get the ball back with 1:40 and a timeout that sounds like good clock management. It was just Campbells big balls going for it that made the timeouts irrelevant.
My guess is that Staley thought he would still have the 2 minute warning. With the play clock being slightly ahead of the game clock I think he was counting on the fact that if the Lions didn't run a play they would be hit with a delay of game and then after the ensuing 2nd and 16 the 2 minute warning would come. Or that the Lions would be forced to run a play before the 2 minute warning and the warning would come after that. He dropped the ball by not knowing with less than a second difference between the play clock and two minute warning Detroit was not going to be forced to run a play and could take it down to the 2 minute warning.
The Chargers are definitely hindered by their coach. I'm not saying they have a guarantee champion without him. But they could definitely be more competitive.
Games are not lost or won on single plays, but one can certainly opine on whether a particular play foreshadowed the outcome or not. In this case, Campbell going for it on 4th and 2 was absolutely the linchpin--Lions pick it up, they win. If they get stopped, Herbert guts the Lions' D one last time and the Chargers get the walk-off field goal.
Those 40 seconds would not have mattered. Say they used a timeout, the Lions run their 3rd down play. They use another. The lions go for it on 4th down, like they did before, convert. It is STILL game over, no matter what. So.....those timeouts meant nothing.
That is possibly true (because there is a chance that the Lions would not go for it on 4th down), but that doesn't justify Staley making the clock situation worse for his team. His job was to manage the clock so as to give his team the highest chance at tying or winning the game. Saving the timeouts achieves the exact opposite in several scenarios and achieves the same result in all other scenarios, but there is not a single scenario where it leads to better chances for his team, especially because the Lions had no timeouts left (actually there is one scenario, and that is if the Chargers somehow got a defensive score at that point, but the odds of that happening are negligible). For reference, with an immediate stop by the defense (i.e. no 1st down by the Lions), the offense would get the ball back with around 1:40 if they saved their timeouts, or with around 2:20 if they used them. Now, if the defense did not get an immediate stop, then we go to all the other scenarios discussed.
It looked like the playclock was ahead of the game clock. There should've been a play on second down before the 2 minute warning. Then they could call time out on 3rd down and have a time out when they get the ball back.

Dan Campbell has had a lot…..a lot of clock management snafus as coach. Although you can’t dare say that here in Detroit as he is a flawless God. But I’ve always felt young coaches should hire an old school coach who was good at clock management. It’s so underrated how important it is now. He could sit in a booth and “suggest” time outs to coaches to take the stress off them. I mean, there a coach for everything else, why not a clock coach?
I like that scenario board graphic you had. It's crazy how such obvious decisions don't get made because of how the game of football can come down to a matter of seconds.
In your third scenario “the lions pick up a first down and go out of bounds stopping the clock”! The lions are a smart team. No way a receiver goes out of bounds to stop the clock. First down? With only the 2 minute warning to stop the clock? Game over.
My theory is that clock management is a complete non-factor when they hire coaches. They want "player's coaches", or "offensive/defensive geniuses". Clock management? Who cares, we're winning every game by 10+ with this guy!!!
A good rule of thumb before the 2mij warning is if you are up you save them, if you are down use them. Being tied is akin to being down so I’d say use em.
Losing by 3 or less as many times as the Chargers have, isn't the sign of a great team like Staley says the Chargers are, it's the sign of a great team with a really bad coach!
A coach using "great" to describe his team unofficially started to go off track when DD charter member George Seifert deemed the 1990 49ers, the one who turned the ball over six times and lost to the 3-7 Rams and then lost to the barely playoff-bound Saints, as better than the year before. Since then it's plummeted faster than Josh Allen and ball security.
Where was the OC? He’s calling the plays, he can tell Staley to call a TO. Staley has been making bad decisions since he was hired as Chargers HC. I’ll be surprised if he makes it to the end of the season because Chargers are not making the playoffs. They will be an 8-9 team, at best.
This is splitting hairs. :23 seconds zero timeouts and needing 45 yds is just hoping for a miracle or putting this particular team in an all too familiar situation that typically ends up in a sack or int if you follow our history. You’d have a better case at this being a terrible coaching gaff if he could have saved :45 seconds or more.. even :38 seconds… but :23 seconds isn’t enough time to even run a play far enough to get into fg position and have time for everyone to run downfield 40 yds, get set and spike the ball assuming you make a play. So you’re basically at best wishing for a pass interference call followed by a Hail Mary or a 60 plus yard fg. Neither have the chargers ever accomplished to my knowledge 🤷♂️. The lions were already in fg range prior to the last series before the game ending fg. After the first down tackle for loss the mentality is that if you hold them to a fg you save a timeout to set your offense up for a game tying fg after you get the ball back. After the second down tfl at that point you’re confident if you can hold them to 4th and I’d say 5+ they definitely kick the fg leaving you plenty of time plus your timeout to go on a final drive. The problem only arose after giving up 12 yds on 3rd and 14 giving the lions the opportunity to go for it on 4th down and not give you the ball back. But :23 seconds zero timeouts isn’t helping the team all that much. It’s the equivalent of buying them a lottery ticket that wouldn’t have hit anyway. 🤷♂️
