  • Britain is made up of an astonishing 80% farmland, with only 2% working in agriculture. However, many people are waiting to return to the land and that’s where Monty Don steps in. With over 40 years of farming experience, he’s helping the Wood family create their dream farm. Ditching their London life for a quiet Cornwall dream, the family wants a stress-free, self-sufficient living. However, Sue and Rob have no farming experience and Sue is heavily pregnant. Have they bitten off more than they can chew?

    USED to raise pigs on my offgrid farm for over a decade. Love them. Never hated any animals, until I made the mistake of having goats...traded a truckload 4 yrs later for what the original 2 cost. Their stench in the barn & damage in many gardens when they got loose for an hour stayed for over 3 yrs to remind me. My father had said, only dumb hippies buy goats. They wallow in poverty conditions. When I saw the constant growth of neighbour's beef cattle....we learn from mistakes.

    I actually thought this was going to be Monty talking about when he and Sarah packed up their London business and moved to Herefordshire. I only watched about half, but pretty obvious this couple was not going to make a living on an acre of land. No one does, unless it's a gold mine or truffle farm. They had no income, no skills, no experience, the real estate thing fell through, yet they decided it would be a good time to have another baby and rent an enormous house with almost no land. Better for him to work a few more years, by then the kids would be in school, and the wife could get a part time job to help sock away some money. They might have lived in the unfinished house until it was ready to sell. Monty was more than diplomatic in his assessment.

    Had flock of free-range hens for 2 yrs. Such a secure roomy insulated henhouse that not a spider or fly could get in. NEVER left the door ajar, same as in all of my buildings & garage. NO rodents, no flies shitting on walls. Sold eggs to a longterm care home and eatery/corner store. Poultry knew so many sentences, were such good company in my huge yard as I worked the gardens or built more infrastructure. Then in 3 hits, each rigth infront of me, a weasel killed all but 2 roosters, 2 hens, 1 of which was so internally injured that i had to drop feed her for a few weeks, confine her to the big cat carrier cus she was so weak & eyes so bruised & swollen. The day run now looks so sad, which I locked them into when I had to go to the village for my monthly shopping. All that work....down the drain! All that effort, nothing now. Paying $6 CA now for a dozen barely yellow yolked eggs hurts. The speed at which a weasel does circles of kill (for fun, not food) is frightening. Even with a spade in my hand but naked ankles, I was never so frightened. It made eye contact several times as I tried to kill it but too scared to get that foot or so closer...& was not wanting to kill the hen it had encircled. Back legs around the tail end of the hen, a full S circle, then front legs around shoulders & mouth around face of hen. A hen that survived had such internal inquires that I had to drop- feed her eggnog/pedialite every few hours for 2 weeks as all kinds of things leaked out of her into the cat carrier all tht time. And her completely swollen face, black from injury, made me cry everyday until I saw some improvement. When you teach your animals all kinds of things thru affectionate effort, it hurts extra when things go so wrong.

    I've grown up in the farming heartland in the USA & have a massive garden. I've had stomach cramps from 5 min in & all the way through this video. 😫

    Wow, having watched Monty on Gardners World forever, I was so surprised to hear him use the f-bomb
    with this guy. Not surprising though, with the frustration dealing with dreamers and clueless wanna be entrepeneur's. Two other episodes that I watched have the same issues. I have not found a forth issue!

    I think they could do it, if the conditions were better, but they should have put it off until the development was sold. Then buy your own property, so you can do what you like with the property.

    The beauty of the English countryside is God at his best. Stunning.

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, well... there IS Tuscany, too, you know. A different kind of beauty, but one does think, 'God was having a very good day when he made this' while looking at the Tuscan countryside. To be honest, if I didn't know what life is like outside of TV shows in the UK, I would be ready to go back and live there again just for the countryside. But the culture has decayed so much since I last lived there... Sad. A bit like a lovely young woman who has taken to prostitution... still physically beautiful, but sadly degraded.

    This is really dramatic. That poor woman, nearly ready to pop with a baby and they've got to just pull it all together and make this work. Good thing for Monty Don pushing them, but how many people get into such a situation and don't have Monty Don pushing them and providing very unusual opportunities to boost their business? The woman's words that for 11 years he's done nothing day after day and then tried to do it all at the 11th hour... Rob needs to change his work habits/ethic NOW.

      There were times during this video I started to weep. It was such an honest and interesting story. This couple really bared their feelings and actions to everyone. That takes an extremely amount of courage. I did laugh at the part when the wife said she was going to kill the husband. So true. I saw myself in that very moment.
      I love this new series❤

    Monty delivered again. As usual his practical innate knowledge of what it takes to make a living of your land came through. - I thought from the beginning that this family could not make it and it was good to know that I was right. With what it takes in this day and age to bring up a family, it is very hard to do it from the land we own. So how are we going to save this planet? I wonder…

    • @jenmorricone4014
      @jenmorricone4014 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, same thoughts about the planet and the fact that we are still promoting meat production, a major source of greenhouse gases and fresh water overuse. The amount of water required to produce a pound of meat is no longer sustainable.

    • @GoingsoloinFrance
      @GoingsoloinFrance ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenmorricone4014 Who told you what you know? You are ill informed. Put a calf in 2 acres of grassland and two years later you have half a ton of protein. There is nothing more sustainable... Don't repeat what you hear in the agenda driven media... They want you eating crickets and grasshoppers.

      Giving something a go is worth pursuing but it needs to be viable financially…getting advise as Monty has given them…but if you haven’t got good financial backing it’s darn hard…unless you do substantial farming for yourself so this cuts down on buying from outside..passion for growing or raising animals is what counts..

      @@FigaroHey Their dreams haven’t been shattered..it comes down to timing..they had so much to cope with including the arrival of a new born..they can give it another go further down the track when their lives can truly be in a place where there can be a process of not relying on creative energies to earn money to bring up a family ..a great idea can make money too..
