  • Presenter and keen amateur, Ollie, was recently, publicly and shamefully defeated in a max power challenge by a beginner cyclist. Can a new training plan help him regain some of his lost dignity and finally break the 1000 watt barrier?

    Ollie is absolutly the most relatable gcn-presenter! I mean, I know I'll never gonna have Manons sprinting strength, Si's stunning TT-power, Hank's almost scary ability for endless suffering or Dan's spectacular hair. Funny thing is when i started cycling i really liked the sprint segments on Zwift and increased my sprint power from ~700W to 1016W in what felt like weeks. Then i started Zwift racing in races that are always so hard that i never really have the power to sprint in the end... Then the day before yesterday after months of training i finally got to sprint again just for fun in stage 2 of the Tour de Zwift and hit "only" 1093W. I kind of expected more because that ~80W equals just what i put on to my FTP in that time but i guess if you do not train for sprints you cant expect to get much stronger in them.

    Be interested to see how this works out. Having gone from pure stamina to heavier load I was surprised how I did, it may be the same for Ollie. Either way it will be interesting.
    My natural thing was distance running. It didn't matter how far I ran, the pasce was the same and my last mile sprint was the same, so it made sense to go marathon because my maintaining pace worked best for me there. My sprint kick was so famously bad people said they liked keeping with me because if they managed all but the last mile, they were guaranteed to beat me.
    Of course with such stamina based genetics and practice on a long limbed weedy frame, I took the natural next move and tried powerlifting when looking for a direction after achieving desired bodyweight of less weedy. Surprisingly I found I am pretty good at it, the long limbs and weedy frame means I will only ever be strong for size and surprise most but never close to competetive, though I did take part in one contest. So I can go on forever or do dramatic one off, neither of which helps me sprint on fooot or bike. The stamina means my sprint is longer than most, but the one of power fades really fast.
    Of course there is a cost to the power I gained. Peak running weight was around 9stones at 5 foot 10. I am the same height but now around 13 stones in weight which means I have more mass to carry and am slower.
    Heart is still good, I can maintain 170 to 175 bpm for 2 hours without over reaching which approaching 50 years old is OK, in truth it hasn't changed much since pre 20s. However what I can do at that bpm has changed a lot over the years. It's harder to guage on cycling because my bike is better, but running is slower, weights are lighter and in truth I think cycling is only roughly the same because of better machine. It is also amusing as any of us fit old folk will tell you to see people wondering how we can do what we do when we should be holding onto a zimmer.

    I bet 2 sessions of max 30 sec intervals, and then a 2 days rest will get those missing 100 watts of the top end. I mean really, 10% of max power is very easy to gain for the short period of time. 10% of ftp is another story though) The real monthly challenge would be 1200 watts with those stats.

    Does any human being have less fast twitch fibres than Ollie? This once again shows the genetical disposition thing very clearly. When I got my first power meter last year, I did 1100+ Watts untrained. After 9 months of training I am even close to Ollie on 1 minute power but miles away on FTP. I‘d be very interested on 5 minutes and on which duration I start to fall apart.

Thanks to Ollie, I'm not alone as being able to ride comfortably at 250 watts for three to four hours while still not being able to break 800w on a sprint.

    Train weights if any of you want a higher peak power. I can do over 2000W for 3 seconds and over 1500W for 10 seconds. There's a reason all the top olympic sprinters train weights. 3 hours into a race and hitting over 1000W for a full 150-200m sprint is where it gets hard.

    How much force can a person put down above his own weight? if you weigh 1000N (101,8kg) and you have a 175mm crank thats 175Nm at the crank, with a cadence of 90rpm that equates to 1625 watts, given a mean output of that torque (simplified).
    If you are a lighter person like Ollie, just using your body weight, lets say 650N (66,2kg) means just 114Nm at the crank. With the same cadence means 1059 watts. To produce 1625 watts, that person need to have a cadence of 140rpm while maintaining the torque.
    Now, I dont know in relation to your bodyweight, what kind of torque is possible to acheive and how the cadence is affecting that torque, but its unfair to compare a heavy person to a light person because the heavy person, by just being heavier will naturally put out more watts with same effort. What it comes down to is watts per kilogram and total mass being moved. IMO throwing out your watt number says nothing since it is irrelevant unless you also give your weight at the time of measuring. A light person will generally put out less power but also has less weight to move, meaning pure power figure is not the single factor of sprint performance.

      @@florenceetalexismartel8365 I bet you would see an improvement in power if you wear a backpack, someone with a powermeter should do the comparison. But the problem is that now you weigh more so you wont be any faster.

    • @jordanmeanes4464
      @jordanmeanes4464 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weight doesn't really have any significance during a sprint, hence all the best sprinters are generally big guys. Raw power rules at the end of the day. Obviously CDA is a factor are proven but guys like Cav or Ewan but being lighter won't make you faster in a flat sprint (unless you're Zwift).

    • @BC-wj8fx
      @BC-wj8fx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bingoberra18 I looked into this too and my peak power numbers related approximately to my body weight on the crank at that cadence - so I did higher cadence training and improved my peak. But the weighted pack experiment would be interesting and easy enough to try.

    Is the difference between indoor and outdoor power measurement due to motivation or to outdoor power being measured at the pedals, and indoor measured at the hub? Not that I am wanting to promote super duper lubed chains and ceramic bearing derailleur pulleys for indoor trainers....

    • @philipb.1950
      @philipb.1950 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ist because of the bike movment

    • @VeganCatalyst
      @VeganCatalyst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The difference is in the sprint form. The position outside is natural and more efficient, meaning as you ride hard you can position yourself and the bike as much to maximize full leverage/extend better and use bike swing momentum as a spring to push back other leg quicker. Basically the whole body is engaged including arms, core etc.
      Now indoor trainers are static. Most of them don't move in any way and bike stays the same. Meaning you are limited to certain position and can't use above mentioned benefits. Even trainers that move still are not as effective or natural as in real life sprinting. Likely to having a lag or limited movement. Don't quote on me for this though.
      Anyway hope that helps understand it better.
