My mom was driving me home from work one day and she had been really upset about a recent passing in the family, especially since she was so close to them. Since this song reminds me of my mom, I grabbed her phone that was already playing music and changed it to this song. Despite my horrible voice I still sang to her, and she looked at me and broke down halfway through the song. By the end of the song we were both crying. It's a sad yet fond memory I have of me and my mom and it's a memory I'll cherish forever.

My interpretation is simple. His mother asked him to build a house of gold when his father dies and take care of her. While part of him wants to make his mother happy, this would kill his dreams of pursuing music. The fact that his heart is with his mom and his legs are elsewhere shows that he is truly torn between pursuing his dreams and taking care of his mother. Ultimately, he dies when he stays with his Mom, which represents his pursuit of a music career dying.

I think you can see the clue that points to his despair about his dream going nowhere at that time, when he says "and since we know that dreams are dead, and life turns plans upon their heads, I will plan to be a bum so I just might become someone!" he is saying "screw it, I'll just stay home and become a bum in the eyes of society and at least prove that I love my mother. Ironically, of course that didn't happen and he is living his dream, which leads to the song "ride" where he asks "well If I really loved my mom and the people I cared about back home, why wouldn't I sacrifice my dream and devote my life to them?"

That meaning got me crying. He tried following his mom's dream of having a "golden house" and that american dream, but sticking with his mother's dream ended his and his "brother's" life. I'm guessing that she couldn't see them that's why she had no reaction and they were just symbolic of their dream trying to accomplish her's. He tried following it to his best ability, but failed and the consequence was his life (and his "brother's") and so after the sun set he went on to being dead.
