    I thought I should bring up the Neanderthal DNA, since you seem so shocked by it. Your Iberian DNA is the source of your Neanderthal DNA. 23andMe talks about this as well. Other proto-humans existed around the same time, including denisova hominin (aka, Denisovans) in Asia, so most people with South Asian DNA have "higher than average" Denisovan DNA. People from the Iberian peninsula are Spanish & Portuguese, but the Neanderthals that merged into that gene pool had a similar MC1R gene variant as Irish and Scottish people, giving them red hair and freckles. However, it's a slightly different gene variant of the same gene, and no modern humans with red hair got it from Neanderthals. However, because of Natural Selection, geneticists think that the gene mutation developed independently in two different parts of the world for the same reason.
    Though popular culture often portrays Neanderthals as primitive and stupid, they actually had bigger brains than homo sapiens. They also are one of the few great-ape descended proto-humans that had hyoid bones developed properly to give them the ability of speech, just like homo sapiens. They were also more muscular.
    It's also probably valid to bring up that your Cuban heritage can be tied to your Iberian DNA, since Cuba was a Spanish colony starting in the 16th Century. Most Latino people have Spanish DNA because of the history of conquest.

      Carlos, yes this is true. Homo neanderthalensis only existed in Europe (mostly around the Iberian peninsula), so people who have no European ancestors (like Asian people that are not East-Asian, and people who are from Africa originally and never left and never had European ancestors in their line) will have 0% Neanderthal DNA. However, the average European has ~2% DNA, whereas people from the Iberian region (like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc.) will have higher percentage.

      80% of British DNA is IBERIAN from the original Iberan population that immigrated to Brittany about 12000 years ago from the Iberian Peninsula. The Celtic immigration (3500 years ago) and the Anglo-Saxon immigration (1500 years ago), although that had profound influences on culture and language, did not influence the basic British DNA strain.

      The Basques are the only remnants of the Iberians in Western Europe. Except for the Basques, the Iberians were totally eliminated or assimilated by the Indo-Europeans. The Basques probably survived because they were located in the Pyrenees Mountains. Note that there are some geographical names left: the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), and the area of Iberia in the Caucasus.

    Ancestry always puts the AncestryDNA test kits on sale around all holidays. Shipping & handling is around $15-16. You can get the kits as low as $59. I did the 23andme test years ago and then the Ancestry one a couple of years ago. My results were similar. We forget that people traveled and moved to other countries, even back then. I'm adopted and mixed, so I was happy it showed by genetic backgrounds. It's pretty cool! Plus, I located two sisters on my biological father's side. I'm the family genealogist for both my adopted and biological families. Take the health reports cautiously, as they originally were told by the FDA they couldn't offer them anymore because there was no empirical data. For example, I have a 24% greater risk of developing macular degeneration. After speaking with my retina specialist, he told me based on my history and condition I did not have the greater risk.

    I've seen that you were little bit confused regarding your Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, so I'll try to explain it as best as I can. Both of the results were kind of right. The thing is that while migrating from Israel, they passed through Anatolia (Turkey), Balkans, Eastern Europe and Germany. Some of them stayed in those places and some of them continued migrating and searching for better life conditions. So if you sum up the percentages from Balkans, Eastern Europe and Ashkenazi Jewish from 23andme, you'll be close to the 7% that are in Ancestry results. Even though Jewish religion prohibits mixing with other religions and ethnicities, it's obvious that people were always just a people and mixed with whoever their eyes and hearts choose and not what their religious "morals" told them to. So, you can proudly say to your Jewish friends that you are 6-7% Jewish :)

Those are the ones you really have in your DNA!

  • @strngmgc

    Americans are always saying they know they're from somewhere in Latin America and then do these tests and are like "wow where is it on my map". In this case she counted the Native American as her "Cuban", like... oh no. There is no such thing as a latin race, we're simply mixed people, so apparently your family that lived in Cuba were white. That's it. The Americas were colonized just like the USA, the only different thing is that we didn't have any type of racial segregation. You wouldn't expect the results to show "x% american from y state", so how can one expect to see any other country of the Americas in there?
    Also, she probably missed her "Cuban side" in there and acted surprised because maybe she didn't understand it, but let me give you a tip: it's the Iberian percentage.

      Mark Turner Actually, it shows that they are reliable. The more people who supply DNA, the more accurate everyone’s results will get. When it first started, they didn’t know where all DNA came from (they still don’t), which gave regional estimates. As the years went by and more people provided samples, those estimates got narrower to the point where you had more defined results.

      Berly ashkenazi means european. Mizrachi jews are the ones who have the west Asian/ Semitic genes So, ashkenazi Jewish don’t necessarily look different from other Europeans. The genetic marker for them is different because there was a Jewish migration where they moved toward Europe around 600-800 years ago and there were a decent amount of people in Europe that converted to Judaism. Ashkenazi jews can trace their genes back to around 350 people. I think they married and had kids with those of their own faith so the genetic pool wasn’t all that big. I believe there was a study that shows among ashkenazi Jews they’re all 30th cousins which is why there’s that distinction between ashkenazi Jewish vs a european. Other than that there are plenty that look a very standard european and don’t have that “Jewish” look or mizrachi look

    It is interesting that on both DNA tests you came out as almost half Italian. Were your Cuban ancestors originally of Italian descent??? The reason I ask is that most Cubans are pure 100% European, but their DNA usually shows as mostly Iberian whereas you come out as mostly Italian. Since Spain is close to italy and both Spain and Italy are Mediterranean countries many Spaniards and Latin Americans have some Italian DNA which is actually Spanish DNA mistaken for Italian DNA. However, in your case the Italian ancestry is so high that it certainly indicates recent Italian ancestry.

Most surprising, it’s very possible my mother’s father, who I searched for for decades and finally found, may not be her father after all. This is who I am decended from. We were the very first horse people and the only tribe the Roman's feared and forced us to be their cavalry. They took the sons very young for 30 years Generationally for centuries. Which forced the daughters to be the warriors and defenders of the tribe. They didn't marry until the men would eventually return to the tribe, they had arranged marriages. They didn't kill the boys but sent them to the fathers to hide from the Roman's. They found their tombs 2yrs ago and have the DNA of the Poles Czechs and Ukrainians. The Roman's have busts of the Sarmatian knights faces 5000yrs ago and my family look like twins of these guys still today and I found out that my last name means the eyebrowbridge of the Sarmatians.

As I said in my trace regions there were slight differences but nothing significant. Just go through results carefully and you might notice when you add up the percentages, they are more similar than you think. The bit of African you had showing up I thought was super cool!!! I believe the difference between the test as far as your Jewish ancestry are due to how they calculate them. Ashkenazi Jewish is different than European Jewish because they are a select group of Jewish people. European Jewish would include the Jewish Ancestry that would be in Southern Europe to include the Iberian peninsula. Also different companies look at different segments of your DNA so the results should fluctuate slightly due to this examination of different segments of DNA. The other thing is that they only compare results with people in their database instead of a huge database for all DNA tests. You can find relatives through these tests that you share segments of DNA with but you can also use another website called GedMatch that will help with that as well.

  • @Lehmann108
    @Lehmann108 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a clinical psychologist very familiar with statistical research. Okay, the problem with these DNA tests is they are promoted as ways to reveal information beyond their capacity to provide it. These DNA tests are based on statistical probability of you matching a particular DNA profile from a particular region of the world. The problem is that for most regions of the world there are not enough people in the data base to develop a good comparison. The biggest DNA data bases are from North America and Western Europe. But outside of that the data bases are relatively small. That's why a black person who clearly has African DNA will do one of these tests and the results will not pickup on that DNA at all and will say they are European, because the European data bases are so large. (There's actually a hilarious video of a young black woman in a near state of shock because her test results say she is basically white, when clearly she is not.) So, take your results with a grain of salt, so to speak especially when the percentages get very low.

    Take both results, merge them, and they give you a result which shows something that can be used to more accurately determine where your ancestors might be from. Basically, they're both right, because they rely on comparing your results with a group of samples from individual regions. Each company uses different samples, and no samples are exactly representative of a region because Human move around, so they won't necessarily agree with each other.
    They look at a model which takes a group of people in each region and finds common traits within those groups, which are identifiably different from the other groups, so based on their samples, those are accurate within their database. Overall, the strongest results should tend to agree with each other.
    Your results basically say that you are Indo-European and Semitic, with some influence from North Africa and Scandinavia. The East Asian and Indigenous American most likely, (I'm actually certain, but that's my opinion as they say), originates on the Scandinavian side, through the Sammi people of Finland, but it is a long way back in history. The Sammi people are the same people that migrated to North America, though distantly related.
    I generally believe that they split off from the people that would become the Indigenous people of America during the migration in the last Ice Age, and kept wandering up past Greenland, to Svalbard, and eventually into Norway and then Finland. This is where they would have mixed with your distant Scandinavian Ancestors. Remember the North See and Arctic Circle would have been Ice all the way to the UK around that time.
    The Iberian on the other hand, is where your African and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry most likely comes, as Iberians migrated with the Trade Routes of the Semitic peoples, and I believe tended to have spent some time in North Africa mixing with the Berber population there, (themselves a mix of Semitic and African peoples), before migrating into Spain and Portugul, and eventually up into the Iberian Peninsula, and to the Britain and Wales from there.
    As your Ancestry indicates Western European, I'm inclined to think that's probably from Spain and Portugal as well; while the Balkan, German and French, would likely indicate distant ancestry from the Hittite people of Anatolia and the Levant, (interesting that it shows up, but I think that's a numbers game), and the Italian represents the strongest influence on your Ancestry, but it might interest you to know it also is likely a mix of Semitic, North African, and Indo-European.
    So basically, the Mediterranean is a melting pot, and you're part of it, but some distant ancestor likely also originated in Norway, Sweden, or possibly Denmark or even Finland, moved through the British Isles, and their Ancestors moved from there into Spain and Portugal, and eventually your now Spanish and Italian Ancestors met up, and here you are. -ish.

    You should know that as Ancestry updates theirs technology AND as your family adds information across the board, your results become more detailed. I also had Iberian Peninsula for a while and now it's below 1% and practically gone. While the other sides have increased and become more specific.

    1:50 marks, you are correct Brittany to think that. In the Bible it speaks of people being brought back to their land. I worry about these test as they are not 100 percent right. I think about 60 percent is the right number. First of all, one has to collect samples of all nations that have not moved and have been un-tampered.

    From what I have been told, the different results are because of the number of samples that each company might have to compare them to from the various regions, but, I might be mistaken. The difference in the Jewishness is nothing to be concerned about, seeing that the Ashkenazi Jews are those that reside in Modern Israel, having come out of the Holocaust. There are not the original Hebrews, however, they are a sect of the Jewish Race from that was dispersed by Rome. So, Italy is a country where many of these Jewish Families would have ended up, meaning do indeed have Jewish DNA. Ancestry, if you pay for the lowest cost is going to only give you the basic results and if you pay for a better upgrade you will get better results. I might have to see what 23 & Me says about me, which would make this my 3rd test. Ancestry keeps updating my results as more customers DNA tests are compared, so, it would appear that is who it works with them.

  • @injunsun
    @injunsun 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When "European Jewish" is mentioned, that's both Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish. the latter lived in Italy and Spain, and many families went to Cuba. 23&Me doesn't have any Sephardic Jewish in their model.

    Hey Brittany, I just stumbled across your page and saw your video, it was awesome. However, I noticed your last name and that’s the same name my family originated from. My grandparent always told me that who ever had that last name was some how family of mine, and since I really don’t know my dads side that well, it wouldn’t be impossible. I just ordered a 23&me test, which is why I was looking at comparisons lol. Well, idk if you’ll see this but if you do, please reply back. I would love to talk! P.S: My family is from Cuba too!

    The different priced Ancestry packages just give you access to different tools to look up family trees. It’s gives the same genetic results for all packages. Chose Ancestry because their database is used by investigative geneticists to find lost relatives. And I found out my dad was not my dad by finding a half sister.

    So I know I’m seeing this months after you posted it, but I thought I’d comment on the macular degeneration since many people aren’t commenting on that.
    Your slight increased risk is probably because it is more common in women with a fair complexion. However, the largest risk for getting it is smoking cigarettes so if you don’t have a family history of it and don’t smoke you should be fine.
