The Mets had a lack of hitting at 3B those years. They paid a price for Joe Foy, giving up Amos Otis who became a star with the Royals as well as Bob Johnson who was a journeyman, but he had a moment in the sun with the '71 Pirates, winning game 3 in the NLCS. He also held game 6 in the World Series before the Orioles won it in the 10th. The Cubs bullpen was a problem in '69 and '70 though I don't think this was necessarily expected. Phil Regan led the league with 25 saves in '68 and had a 2.27 ERA. He had been with the Dodgers at the beginning of 1968 but was traded along with Jim Hickman for Ted Savage and Jim Ellis, a trade the Cubs clearly won. All his saves were with the Cubs that year. He had a drop off after '68, maybe because of the lowering of the pitching mound.
@@KurtBergland The way 1970 turned out, that could have tipped the scales to the Cubs. He had a good year in 1970 pitching for the Cubs, Cards, and Royals. He was 10-3 with 14 saves and a 2.60 ERA. Funny thing is when I see a player traded from a Leo Durocher managed team I wonder if the relationship with Leo had anything to do with it. I don't have any examples, but I do think Leo's approach and personality rubbed some players the wrong way. Of course Leo's greatest success story as a manager was not half bad, namely Willie Mays. If he could have held on in Houston and gotten them into a World Series against a Texas Rangers team led by Billy Martin, there could have been fireworks.
Thanks for game. Enjoyed it.
Amen , old man!
Ah thanks!
Rest in Peace Bruce Sutter.
These 1970 Cubs need Bruce Sutter in the bullpen!
@@vancedurbin1132 The '69 Cubs could have used him too.
Indeed

That was a major hole at 3b. The Cubs gave up on Abernathy probably too early as well.
