A fun, compact little scenario well summed up. I didn't realize the door at the start was meant to be a puzzle (probably because it barely is), it sounds entirely surplus.

If anything? It can be used as a bad feels 'puzzle' where you ask the players what they do, and after they fail to open it for a while, you tell them it was on a timer anyway, and you just felt like wasting their time.....

I had a player with a character that started with 1 lb of clay, which they used to plug up the flue that conveyed the fire from the statue, disarming it.

It's a great intro to 0 level funnels. I ran this for a group that has mostly played Pathfinder or 5e and they really had to change their thinking as you can't just brute force your way past everything.
The statue incinerated several peasants and the snake took a few as well. They smashed the skull easily enough. They avoided the pool completely figuring it to be a trap, so I thought the last room was going to be a wipe. But they quickly figured out to go after the leader while some of them stayed along the edge of the pit and kicked the warriors back down as they were climbing out. 18 peasants entered, six escaped with gear and treasure.

That sounds like an absolute blast! I had a similar thing with DCC funnels and 5e players and I had to hammer it home that creativity will win the day more than anything else.
Thanks for sharing :) I love hearing people's funnel stories!

Just wanted to say "excellent review style!"
Covers pros and the minor cons of the module, giving a great visual/verbal overview of the encounters and even some supplemental play aids.Just a lot of info packed into ~5min
    Thank you

Great review of a great adventure! I'm looking forward to more DCC adventure reviews on this channel! 🙂
The Portal Under the Stars was the very first DCC adventure I ever ran. I had 16 0-level PCs who were extremely smart and lucky which resulted in an impressive 12 of them surviving! 😮
I liked the adventure so much that I will run it again as a starter for my second DCC campaign, this time with 15 0-level PCs. I kind of hope to see more of them dying this time! 😈

I do love the idea of this old man on his death bed telling *anyone* who'll listen about the time he nearly made it big. He could have been somebody, could have been a contender! But yeah, I think it's much more effective if you start as the stars have just aligned and the portal opens :)

Funnels "Deadly peasant game shows" Great quote! As a DCC newbie I was going to skip Portal Under The Stars but you've made me rethink. Great 3D maps, will have to get them. Thanks for a great review!

Yeah I still think Sailors on the Starless Sea is better, but I think you'll have a blast running this for people. It gets so chaotic so fast! Thank you for the kind words :)
I put the link for the map used in the description for easy access :)

Yeah one of my players figured the door puzzle instantly so it worked out out but I'd just hand wave it and open the door if there was any confusion

This was the first DCC game I ran and it rules. I would argue that the actual point of the door puzzle is to kill a PC to set the tone. Nothing says "welcome to DCC" like having your Dwarven apothecary disintegrate before even getting inside.

    • @wasabiburger3047
      @wasabiburger3047  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Totally agree on it being a proper tone setter. I think most funnels should follow PUtS and make the first encounter deadly to set the tone of what the players are in store for. I just think it could have been done a bit better. :)

@@wasabiburger3047 Sailors on the Starless Sea area A does this well, while being less of a "gotcha" type introduction to deadliness.
I think "Tomb of the Serpent Kings" also suffers from this sort of...potentially unsatisfying for some 1st encounter.

I've run this... for two players with 8 peasants... which was NOT ENOUGH to get through the dungeon. Lol. When i ran it with more peasants, it was even more fun!
