I love the Vi Hart videos on these! I broke down the steps and slowed down the process to make it easy for the first-timer to follow. This was first invented in 1939 and is in a very fun book by Martin Gardner called Mathematical Puzzles & Diversions. I have seen this hexagonal pattern in many places. After you finish making your hexaflexagon, celebrate by having a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme. Before your first bite, look it over. 😁

Ya you can just get a strip of tape and fold it over on itself so it sticks to itself. It will be in the shape of a ring that you put on your finger.

How long does the paper need to be and how thick

Roughly, the paper should be at least six times as long as it is wide. Technically, I think the paper should be 0.7x wide and 6x long, where x is one side of your equilateral triangle. That length doesn't leave room for error, though. I usually have it about an inch (2.5 cm) wide and as long as the edge of the sheet of paper I happened to use.

I'd check two things: the glue didn't get on another section, and you are flexing only where the open spaces are (don't try to flex it on the solid sides).
