As someone who has been doing art since I could hold utensils, I have a PSA for other artists: if you want to do a color by number even tho you're a talented artist and can make your own art, you can do that if you want to. it's about the experience, and the relaxation. You can even add your own spin to it to touch it up! Don't feel guilty! I encourage you to do easy and fun things!
Yes!! I’ve been doing paint by numbers for the discipline, but then I’ll mix my own colours, do shading. It IS all about the experience! I find it really difficult to make decisions, at least buying a paint by numbers is easier than deciding what to paint on my own, and what size and topic and colours…eeeeek!
My partner and I are both autistic. When we need uninterrupted alone time we call that "decompressing" because it helps relieve the pressure building up inside of us. Recently I've been able to jump back into doing handmade crafts and NOT trying to sell them, just enjoy creativity for the sheer pleasure of it; it's been a huge help for my mental health when I can consistently get that time. I actually found this video when I was looking for something to watch while I did some sewing lol!
My form of self regulation is through music. But I have a problem with time blindness when it comes to things I enjoy or hyper-focus on because I'll get so immersed in it that I forget time exists haha. If something doesn't snap me out I'll stay immersed till my brain decides its done with what ever I am doing. And yes I am autistic. lol
Lovely painting, Orion :) Personally, I love to play the blues on my acoustic guitar. I struggle to express my emotions with words, so expressing them as music works really well for me.
I've gotta say, in terms of regulation and just letting myself unwind I LOVE those "Diamond Dot" painting things where you stick on the little gems onto the canvas. It's just so methodical and repetitive it really soothes me and I can get caught up doing it for HOURS
My wife is a fan of diamond art, and how she destresses most days. The only problem is we're running out of wall space, but some of her creations are truly amazing. 👏
@Mark Huxstep my grandma is having the same wall-space issue so she got a large art binder for them so so can still flip through without closing them all away
the stickers alone would be entertaining..this is such good stuff..my thing has been unorthodox christmas wreaths. special interest and regulating is life!!!
Ooooh unorthodox Christmas wreaths yes!! My mother was making some a few years ago. She made me a Halloween wreath from orange and black feather boas, with orange and black sparkly baubles, skeletons, and pumpkin lights woven in. She said she’d make me a Christmas one but she’s a nurse so she hasn’t yet. I think this is the year I’ll take it upon myself to do so :) goth Christmas wreaths coming right up!
Nice job, Orion! I hadn't thought of this as a regulating tool but it makes perfect sense. Sometimes I like to color so this is a step further. Very cool.
Crafting is my favorite regulation. I also love and get the most out of visual stimming, like watching those little spaces get filled with color using tiny dots or even lines of paint… mmm satisfying!
I was always very attached to art and was drawing nonstop in my Teenage years 😊 I miss this time a lot because today it is very hard for me to Focus for a longer period on drawing or even just to start. Someday I just started to feel pressured by it because everyone wanted me to draw something particular and expected it to be perfect. Not to mention my own perfectionism and someday I couldn't keep up with my expectations anymore so I quited for several years because of the pressure. But a few months ago I wanted to draw again and although I still need to fight my perfectionism it makes me very happy again 😊
I also love crafting for self-regulating; however, I’m visually impaired. Two of my answers to diamond art are encaustic wax painting and Kumihimo braiding. Both are very low vision friendly and very mood-responsive and tactile.
Your art piece is so pretty. Art is expressive you can follow or go your own way, that's the freedom of it. There no time limit either so can take as long as we like. 😊hope you enjoyed making your jellyfish.
As I’m listening to you on TH-cam… I’m stimming while playing on my tablet (not phone, size matters) a game that allows me to complete challenges and allows me to organize my inventory which seems to me a self-ordering and Stims too. My latest is Merge Mansion but I do Words, a a few low impact (slower paced) games. Looking forward to your book to read.
I love your name! I am mother to a 31 yr old son who is autistic and Orion was the "alternate name" I had chosen to possibly give him before he was born in 1991, but when he arrived he didnt seem quite like an Orion, so we went with the other possible choice, a name I hear watching the TV series I,Claudius when I was pregnant, his name turned out to be Drusus! When we saw your video I told him the story of how he almost had the same name as you, and he thought it was pretty cool!
Such cool name choices! I bet you’re a great mom. I was born in 91 and have always wished my parents gave me a more exciting name lol. “Lacey” was always so frilly for me but I do like the spelling. I’d choose something more celestial or earthy for myself lol.
Gosh my Alone time Regulation is quite an extensive list and I do it a lot more than I realize: - Gaming, Creating 3D Recreations of my Interests. (Mainly on Second Life). - Nostalgia Gaming (Playing classic PS1/PS2 Games, etc.) - Watching Star Trek, Doctor Who (and others!) The List goes on. But this is my comfort zone when I feel I need to get away from everything.
Star Trek and Doctor Who for me too! I also just watched the Big Bang Theory this year for the first time and I started it over as soon as I finished it. I’m almost finished with it for the second time. I also usually paint or draw or color when I put on the television.
This is great! I loved paint by number with a fiery passion as a child. Looking back on it now (since you bring it up lol), I can see that it was both a relaxing activity for me as well as nourishing or affirming. I'm definitely going to have a look at the site! Thank you.
I love to do counted cross stitch! It's creative, but also math-based! It soothes both sides of my brain! It takes a while, but I have beautiful artwork on my walls! I even won top honors (a large purple satin rosette!) for one of my pieces at the State Fair!
I don't know whether I could do this. I get overwhelmed by too much of anything, especially too many little things. I do genealogy to relax. It's a family history puzzle and takes research. I'm very interested in family, am a history nerd, and have always been good at puzzles.
My current alone time consist of doing origami, I find it really relaxing especially because you need to focus quite hard to get every fold to be as precise as possible.
Staapppp it! I never thought of paint by numbers! I get frustrated with art because i dont have the skill (yet) to get the image out of brain and onto paper. I can think of 9 million different things i can do with just one kit!
Gratz you finished it ! This one is big. You are funny and so enthusiastic, it's very appreciable 🥰 Very nice choice, I like jellyfish too. We have similar thing in France, it's called "Numero d'art" I did a little one when I was a child, It was a cat. My paintings only contains geometric shapes, 3 of them : one with only squares, one with only triangles, another with only hexagons, others with only lines. With the right colors, right numbers, right shapes, everything is calculated or almost 🤣 Is be meticulous is an autistic trait ? If so it's one of my quality, for the good and the bad to be perfectionist. I need huge alone and quiet time, for the well being of my nervous system.
I love paint by numbers, but often make a mess of them or take so long to finish them that the paint dries up in the pots. I have discovered diamond painting, which works better for me and is beautiful. I actually do many different crafts to help me relax.
I'm a loner . But when I have a drink (obsessive drink) I dunno how I act or really reveal my feelings . So I can't get a balance . The medium balance wud be my greatest asset but it seems to elude me
Ok video nice work on the painting. Wish there was a PSA at the beginning or in the tittle stating a little more clearly it was a payed sponsorship. I did not catch Review at the end of the tittle. In the past some videos would say #ad on the thumbnail. I liked that
For me, alone time, I love crochet. It's very repetitive. Also cross stitch which is kinda the same as paint/colour by numbers because you have to use certain coloured threads in certain places.
Ok so I just wanted to see if anyone else enjoyed music, more specifically rap music, basically because of the beats etc. It's very soothing. Maybe because it's a pattern of sorts... Um... Thoughts?
Do you have a video with examples of daily support needs? I see that I’m needing help, but haven’t figured out exactly where/how in a way that’s not needing a ton of explanation or otherwise annoying to me. Trying to be aware of my ableist thinking, but it’s hard when I used to do more and be much better at things before I over worked myself and burnt out.
OMG don't get me started on another new craft - i already do a dozen different crafts. Each helps me avoid overload in its own way. This week i unavoidably got way too overloaded so i am just sorting beads lol.
This week I spent my “creative time” wrapping embroidery thread onto plastic spools so they can be color coded in their little storage tray! So satisfying and calming!!
This is what I like to do: crafting, building dollhouses, sculpting dolls, sewing doll clothes, crochet, drawing and painting, making junkjournals (and other).
Hey Orion, thought you should know TH-cam played a horrible commercial of a man saying that autism isn’t real but a parenting failure. I kid you not. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. I watch a lot of different TH-cam content and have never seen that commercial, not until I’m watching content designed to support the autistic community. I think it’s particularly awful of TH-cam. I hope there is someway to get them to stop pairing your content with a commercial that is specifically harmful to you audiences.
Not to be Captain Wet Blanket, but I noticed that you don't have any notation that the product is a paid promotion. I don't know if it is or not, but I've noticed a lot of autism channels have been getting brand deals, which I think is awesome. HOWEVER, legally there is a proverbial rake in the grass, which is that all paid promotions need to be clearly labeled. I wouldn't want your channel to get that rake in the face if you step on it, so just a word of warning.
this video wasnt informative or helpful at all.... the only actual "content" here is the segue into the ad.... oh man, i got no problem with sponsorships but at least give us some actual help and advice to go alone with it... im a huge fan and this video was so disappointing to see...

I write my emotions and play guitar also.
One of the ways I like regulate is LEGO sets or models.
My 19 year old autistic son loved Legos as a youngster, still does, so he has a great stock for creating stop action videos now.
