I saw this round live and there is no doubt in my mind the horse had had enough. The horse expected to be punished at this point and simply decided flight (evasion) was the best option. The cause fear and pain.
I have never been a fan of Isabell, she is a very unsympathetic rider and I have seen her myself beating horses into submission in warm ups in the late eighties early nineties. This was before there was close monitoring of warm up arenas by officials, it was also a time when the public were not allowed to watch warm ups. Thank heavens this has all changed for the better, riders may not abuse horses in the warm up at least. What goes on behind the scenes is still guess work but its moments like these that tell the true story.

Hi River, I understand your opinion but i think it is important to note that Satchmo has always been a very complicated horse. I actually think Isabell is a very brave and patient rider for believing in her horse's talent and competing with him regardless of his demons. If you think about it, she could have just trained another "easier" horse.

@@marsatclaudia4374 I don't believe there are "complicated horses" just bad trainers and riders. The prevailing understanding of what went on here is that the horse had been "over corrected" in training/warm up. Notable here is that the warm-up at the 2008 Olympics in Hong-Kong which I attended were not open to the public. Putting it simply the horse had been forced into producing piaffe to the point of absolute resistance at some point fairly recently before the test. This concurs with my experience of this rider in the eighties in closed to the public warm up arenas with no warm up officials. A lot has changed and sadly not by rider choice but public pressure. These days Werth likes to display her patience and gentle training skills as a public relations exercise at show clinics and such but I cant say I'm convinced having witnessed what I have. Take away her spurs, her whip, force and little tight fists and she's a lame duck. What happens behind closed doors unfortunately stays behind closed doors. She isn't the only such rider of course not by a long shot. The truth however will out, in the arena, under the spotlight, it always shows.

This is a special arrangement for this horse, music is taken from Montserrat Caballé‘s album.
