If you were to actually shoot a rabbit with a 300, you would find that the bullet does indeed kill them instantly, but it also doesnt do much damage to the meat either, because the round passes through before it can dump much energy. You can do a real world demonstration by shooting a pringles can with a .22, and then shooting it with a .270. The .22 will knock it over, and the .270 will pass through without moving it.
it pains me to see you shoot a gold blacktail with a .300. since theres AR's that are ethical for each class, id recommend doing a "all 96 species with ARs" challenge. i.e. the .22 AR for class 1, the .223 AR for classes 2-4, the .308 AR for classes 4-8, and the .300 AR for classes 7-9
