I was a cox in one of the top 3 ranked rowing clubs in Great Britain, and the stupidity in this is just incredible. These rowers all seem very inexperienced.. and this is just unbelievable. How was this allowed to happen? Who was coaching (or not coaching) these people?!

I suppose this is what happens when you row without coxswains or the awareness of a spoon. Also, I'm fairly certain a good portion of the spectators are in fact, literal cancer in human form.
I've never rowed one of these, but used to be in a canoe brigade that had a ten man canoe and used to race with them against other teams. There were plenty of female paddlers. What I see in this video is bad coaching. Whoever thought it was a good idea to take untrained rowers and have them race, was a damn'd fool. Unless the teams know how to maintain complete control at all times, there should at least have been one trained adult in each boat to direct them. Stupid adults are at fault here.

Pretty much a perfect visual representation of why I quit team sports forever. Having to deal with dumbass teammates who have no idea what they are doing l, mixed with crazy coaches/parents yelling out you taking the whole thing way too seriously. Never again, No thank you.
In the first clip, the coxswain should have had 7, 5 and 3 seat square to get off the course of the dock. If that didn't work, add in stroke to square. Yes, that may be overkill, but it's better than careening into the dock and nearly killing your rowers (their heads were SO close to hitting the edge of the dock.) They should have also had starboard row with more pressure, which they might have been doing. As a coxswain, I respect other coxswain and know that the job is very hard, and especially with tall rowers in a sternloader, it's hard to see stuff. But when you see it coming that fast, you CANNOT fix it gradually, you have to be immediate. I think everyone was pretty inexperienced though. The coach should have been there telling them to stop, but they were probably drowned out by the hordes of screaming moms screaming the most useless things...

Those boats cost anywhere between 10k-50k. What a joke that these team's coaches thought they could do a race with the experience I witnessed. The boat team during my highschool, I don't think anyone was allowed in an official race until they had at least a year of practice out on the river. We did mock races against other schools during practice ever now and then, but nothing which involved a multitude of boats. It's scary enough during a race when you catch a wave during choppy water conditions and almost get pulled overboard. Deer in headlight syndrome with all these rowers.
I used to row in 8th grade, (shitty fucking sport) and the guy directing the boat at the top is called the coxswain and they tell people how hard to row and the amount of strokes and in which direction. Generally when a crash happens its their fault, so in this instance this one is fucking retarded. We had a new guy that the coaches instantly put in that position because he was too small and weak to row. This guy was so unbearably bad. You do races every month or so and on his first one after weeks of practice, he crashes into the pillar of an overpass and the boat SPLIT IN HALF. The amount of panic was hilarious, and so were the looks of the opponents passing by. 38,000$ fuckin' boat, gone. OKC Chesepeake Energy Boathouse.
I am a cox and from a cox's point of view I have to be honest. We don't feel people really understand the job we do, rowers and parents especially. Coding is very hard, it IS a sport, more of a mental one but also has physical aspects included. I think everyone was at fault here, the spectators needed to be quiet so the rowers could focus, the cox needed to think and act fast, if they weren't sure of what to do they should have asked stroke or one of the other rowers. The rowers needed to listen to the cox and follow instructions. If the cox is obviously in a situation where they can't do their job then they should have taken it apon themselves to get themselves out of a crash. Once you are out, get out the way! It is also a basic rule and common sense that if a crow is about to crash into you you need to shout at them, if that doesn't work then scream your life out until they stop, don't leave it for the parents to do. Coxing, as I said before, is very difficult and I remember the first time I coxed (I had had no training) I was terrified, now I am confident in the worst of crashes. If a cox is sent out without proper training and that is an incident the that is the coach's fault.

I remember doing crew in high school and I was in a boat of 4. We had just finished a huge workout, and we stopped for a moment to take a breather before docking in. And when the time came to dock in, and when we heard "ROW" we pushed, but then we started tipping over (bear in mind, a 4 person boat is pretty hard to keep balanced) so we just expected to keep balance. Sadly, we started tipping over, water started filing up, and we tipped over. So yeah, moral of the story, I feel so much better after seeing this video xD But yeah I'm sorry for all those teams in this video, I know the struggle! No worries man!

I remember doing crew in high school and I was in a boat of 4. We had just finished a huge workout, and we stopped for a moment to take a breather before docking in. And when the time came to dock in, and when we heard "ROW" we pushed, but then we started tipping over (bear in mind, a 4 person boat is pretty hard to keep balanced) so we just expected to keep balance. Sadly, we started tipping over, water started filing up, and we tipped over. So yeah, moral of the story, I feel so much better after seeing this video xD But yeah I'm sorry for all those teams in this video, I know the struggle! No worries man!
