I know the sound is a bit odd on this video, for the kit nerds, the GoPro Media Mod's mic socket has gone bad - not the first one of these to do so. Ive cleaned the sound up as much as possible on the Mac, but it was very bad from the camera
Gosh only Mrs Furious second appearance and you’ve already taken her into the hidden sanctum of the secret BARN Matt 😱, I guess that puts pay to the Gentleman’s Club you were thinking of opening in the new year 😂, oh damn it slipped out Matt 😉.
Cant let the wife into the barn.... she'll see all the fleet 🤭 that's the way it is in my house, she hasn't a clue what's in there, so no awkward questions have to be answered 😊
Come on guys He obviously told Mrs furious driving ,its a mates storage place. No need to worry, the gentleman's club Xmas party at the barn is still on🎉
Well done with the unit Tetris Matt. I do like the repair/restore videos, it’s interesting to see the progress as it happens in real time. As always great video, I really enjoyed it❤.
I did my driving lessons in a bright yellow M reg Punto, and coming from my mums C reg MG Metro, it felt like a modern space ship, the chunky heater controls were like a kids toy. Just amazing 😍
Most of the issues I've had with heater cables was the outter clamp not clamping. I'm surprised you can move the heater end so easily, or did you have the know out. That sort of rack and pinio type gear drove is harder to move if you push the rack but yours moved like it was not connected. But if both ends move freely I has to be the cable. As it looks easy to get at, I suggest you take the cable off and look at it. I have cut the outter down and made a new end so making a new cable out of a choke cable should be easy.
A cracking video Matt of a mechanical conundrum. I'd guess at a stretch that the cable is falling to bits if it's a multi strand construction. As a push pull cable it could be fine on the pull but the push might just be 'clumping'' the metal stands as they separate from each other and it's integrity has failed. A replacement cable looks like the fix. Of course I could be completely wrong. Many thanks for the car Tetris barn shuffle as well. Many thanks for sharing.
Yes, I would say the most common failure like this in my experience is the cable plastic covering cracking and the cable strands inside get exposed to corrosion and snaps off.
Nice vlog matt Takes me back to doing the same sort of thing on our old 1998 saab 9-3 convertible It had digital climate control, but still needed the mechanical linkages lubricating and greasing. So much fun working upside down in a footwell😢
My brother had a later punto but the issue with the heater cable was the clamp holding the cable not the cable itself. Make sure the outer cable isnt moving in the clamp when you operate it Matt
Similar issues that I've encountered with hvac cables have mostly been due to the outer shell of cable not being clipped on or held properly. So when when you turn the dial instead of moving the actual cable inside you end up twisting the plastic outer shell
Don't know if the blue cable is generally an issue, but I've not had a problem with ours (the blue 94 cabrio from FOTU). I have had the whole dashboard out though to replace the heater matrix which was leaking onto the ecu. A job to avoid if you can!
I was thinking that the cog wasn't actually mating with the gear, but if the inner piano wire gets a kink in it due to a sticky cable it isn't going anywhere. You need the camera up in the area while you are moving the knob.
Hi, I drive a company car 5 days a week , but use my own car weekends / high days / holidays so to speak . Always dis connect the battery in between times, keep door open ajar to stop alarm going off, live first so no current backfires back through modules etc by keeping earth intact for a short while after , then earth 1st when I re connect. So far , touch wood and all , battery has lasted my five and half year ownership, it was replaced a year before I bought it in 2018. !
Never had a Punto, but I dont think its the cable being stuck in grease. I would say the most common failure like this in my experience is the cable plastic covering cracking, meaning the steel strands have nothing to push against and just flex uselessly, or the cable strands inside get exposed to corrosion or just lose strength and snaps off. Secondly (dont know if I misunderstood that possibility from the video) is of course the internal mechanism in the knob being broken and doing nothing to the cable.
Maybe you can take out the old cable and diagnose a bit better? If the inner cable is stuck then it's easier to fix maybe. Otherwise replace but these parts will be difficult to source
I had a random brass screw drop out of the dashboard on my Punto 60s the other week when I put the heater on, no idea where it goes but I've decided not to worry about it 😂 I think it does look like a cable has stretched, seems odd the left nob moves the cable but the right does nothing!!
@@furiousdriving I'm not sure either don't ever recall selling one in the time I worked at a Fiat dealer, you might be able to get the part number though from the copy of the Fiat eper parts system that's on the Fiat Forum if you search online 😉
I totally agree about the 3 year Halfords ones not lasting 3 years - but the missing bit of that statement is I've never been refused a free replacement 🤣I personally think they're brilliant as I never have to pay for them 😂
Got a Halfords 3 year battery on my sons Corsa. Was fitted in 2015 by the previous owner, so it's now in its 9th year and never had a bit of trouble with it. Corsa stopped being used end of May and was taxed for winter on Dec 1st. We made sure battery was fully charged in May with an old fashioned charger and disconnected it. Started up no problem. As an electrical engineer I don't use battery conditioners, they do more harm than good in my opinion and don't leave the battery connected when the cars not going to be used for more than a few weeks.
Can you disconnect the cable from the back of the dial and the heater and see if the cable innereds will move back and forth. Judging by the movement that cable (blue outer part) flexed I'd would say the cable is the issue but obviously investigation of the cable is needed to clarify that.
Come on Matt. About time you got a pre facelift MK1 Mègane now either hatch or the saloon to fix up like you did the Mondeo and Beetle. Find one that needs saving and loving and do it. Now is the time whrn the MK 1 Mègane is making a comeback again and being talked anout as the great car it was.
My OCD is killing me... Who put the alarm LED in the dash when they had two blank buttons next to the fog lights buttons?! That where i had my LED in my Punto hehe i know, details 😂😂😊
I had this on a non-Fiat… the cable broke in the middle. I’m sure a Fiat specialist could find you a good s/h one. It could be worse… the Mouldeo’s heater is stuck on windscreen. The heater controls are vacuum operated, driven by manifold negative pressure. And the pipe work has all gone hard/brittle. Slow hand clap, Mr Ford…
@@furiousdriving yup, and all connected with semi rigid nylon pipe work. What could possibly go wrong, eh? 😂 Wish me luck - the old girl is in for her MOT tomorrow.
Batteries became prone to early failure when they became sealed for life, at least before one could drain, flush and change the electrolyte, even get faulty cells replaced or the battery rebuilt. The manifestation of our now throw away society. Could you not remove the cable and lubricate using a cable lubricator? Mrs. Furious actually looked furious at the start of the barn stuffing footage.
Do you mean mullered? Because it wasnt. All screws, no forcing, no scratching, no cracking or marks. Or did you mean mulled, as in heated and infused with cinnamon and spices for Christmas? Because that didnt happen either

I couldn't make out if the outer was clamped at the bottom end. If not then wouldn't you be trying to move both inner and outer with net effect zero?
