    I bought one out of curiosity and, while I love the design, the execution is disappointing. As Nick said, you don't get much for the price when compared to a brand like Civivi. I ended up replacing the washers with phosphor bronze, which just feels better. This is one of those knives I'd happily pay more for improved materials and perhaps a 10% increase in size - I think the specific aesthetic would work better if it were bumped up to PM2 size.

    This was one of the first knives I purchased when I started to purchase knives with some thought and research. I have more expensive knives that have more detailed work on them and with better steel, but I have returned to this knife for office and garage work. The predictability in the hand, through its shape and blade thickness, lends well to uneven cutting textures. It is utilitarian in design, with no flourishes that fake some imaginary function. There is a smoothness to the steel that seems more than surface-level finish, so that it moves through cardboard easier than slicier blades. I hope the designer allows the design to carry forward into other materials in blade composition and scales. It is a design worth keeping into a variety of different looks.

    I believe this knife would be absolutely amazing as a titanium framelock, with a micarta front scale and in 3v or elmax or cru-wear...
    they could easily charge 200 and it would sell out immediately. The design is great as you said, and it really deserves a quality treatment.

    I just won the black/red SMKW exclusive version with D2 steel in a GAW. I know a lot of people these days are tired of seeing D2 on budget blades, but I find it to be a very good user steel. I'm old enough to remember when you didn't get even that grade on a $50 knife, so I'm happy with it.

    It is 8CRMOV14. They did get the heat treat right. I have the Tuna which is different but with similar materials. 8CR14MOV. The heat treat is very good for what it is and it seems to dull slower than other 8CR blades I have, but you’re right, they ought to do at least a 9CR which has much better edge retention. I’m not as crazy about D2 which has chipping/sharpening and rust issues. I also like the Sandvik steels. Beseech and CJRB use 12C27 on a few models. I also like that one better than 8CR. It gets really sharp.
    Anyway I still like my Tuna and it still gets pocket time due to the blade shape. It also broke in and opens very quickly now, but yeah CRKT, please raise your game materials wise. Everybody else is.

  • @ryejack
    @ryejack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Seems like the ergonomics would make this a good camp kitchen knife. There's a serious lack of folding knives where the blade comes down like this to allow for chopping without one's knuckles getting in the way. The quality of the materials is disappointing. I'd like to see more knife choices with camping food prep in mind. The SpydieChef is similarly shaped knife, but that's a serious price jump between these two. Give me something in the $80-120 range with decent steel, please.

    I have steels that range from 3cr to s110v and s35vn and I honestly cannot see a huge difference between 8cr and say S30v. Depending on the material, both dull within cuts of each other in my real world experience. This is to be expected as different steels have different chemistry and preferred sharpening tactics, but even still I don’t see any real huge difference. I work at Fedex and we cut a lot of material when repairing boxes or opening something that may have shipped broken. I usually carry something in S30v from different brands and I just cannot see a huge difference. D2 has its own issues, as it needs watched regularly for rust spots (I have a Civivi wyvern that has rust in the groove despite my best efforts) so the gives and takes are always there. Just some food for thought. Good review

    The blade is very similar to the Perpetua (also TJ Schwarz designed). The shape also reminds me a lot of the Burnley Sketch, which Burnley calls a K-tip (which according to the internet is a nickname for the Japanese Kiritsuke). There seems to be an increase of folders with this general blade shape, maybe K-tip should be added to the vernacular as blade style for folding knives.

    I recently acquired a Kubey KB237 with nice Tanto compound grinds, D2 Chinese steel, sculpted G10 scales and ceramic ball bearings. It came perfectly centered, has good lockup, pretty good action and wow is it sharp. Not perfect by any means, but really, really nice for just a little over $34. Teflon washers, Cr13 steel, questionable fasteners and that price point is putting CRKT farther behind and their designers are having a hard time making their poor materials and not so great price points competitive in this market.

    I wish you would get over the Teflon/nylon washer thing. They’re self-lubricating and don’t really bind up like bearings when really dirty. They also tend to wear in and get smoother over time, so being gritty initially isn’t an issue for me. I don’t want to take all my knives apart all of the time, especially with the cheaper knives, because i never know how they’ll hold up. Anyway, thanks for doing the reviews

Because other "theys" continue to push cigarettes decades after their own research showed them to be deadly, or sell pesticides that are decimating the bee population? But to be fair, Teflon products (at least those made in the US) have had their nastiness levels reduced to probably a trace level by now, and bushings in a knife aren't going to be heated by cutting an avocado and so are unlikely to release anything unpleasant, but I'd rather stay away from it. If you're interested, you can check out the Wikipedia article. An extremely small portion of the article: "Sodium trifluoroacetate and the similar compound chlorodifluoroacetate can both be generated when PTFE undergoes thermolysis, as well as producing longer chain polyfluoro- and/or polychlorofluoro- (C3-C14) carboxylic acids which may be equally persistent. Some of these products have recently been linked with possible adverse health and environmental impacts and are being phased out of the US market." And "The studies concluded that there was an association between PFOA exposure and six health outcomes: kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
      Overall, PTFE cookware is considered a minor exposure pathway to PFOA."

    Also something that really stood out to me was that little notch at the top of the handle adjacent to the thumb stud. It just screams to me the thumb stud was suppose to be seated in it when the knife is deployed. Also that would take the thumb stud out of the way of the cutting path on a knife designed FOR FOOD PREP!

Now that I'm an EDC nerd I'm into washers steels actions etc I think CRKT sells a lot more knives to people who are entry level and not as into detail. That said they probably know they can budget on washers etc to offset paying for designs? I don't think they see us EDC people as a big enough target to shoot for. And that's unfortunate as we do exactly as Nick stated we buy Civivi or WE or whatever China 🇨🇳 is competitive with. More quality USA 🇺🇸 made would be nice. We will pay for say an upgrade kit? S30v and bearings maybe Ti clip? 25$ add on? Something to pull sales in....

    Most people don't mind 8cr13 because they carry a dull knife.

    An undercooked great design, Cricket's forte.
    Make this with bronze washers, skeletonized steel linerlock with matching g10 scales (can't stand frame locks especially in steel) and S30v ish steel and I'd pay twice as much. As is... No thanks.

    I’m so sick and tired of crkt putting Teflon washers on their knives. They ruin almost all their knives with them.

      CRKT have invested in teflon washer stocks, they are freaking dedicated to them.

    I thought the colour scheme was going to be in the "Ugly" category. Agree on the design, which is similar to the Kizer Towser K (not suggesting anyone copied anyone). Similar price to that Kizer too, but vastly inferior materials and execution. Same story every single time with CRKT: nice design, but otherwise disappointing. I will never buy another.

    I hate knives with scales that don't match. OCD is way too intense for that.

    CRKT seems to repeat their color schemes... I have the same color scheme on the Tuna I bought from Blade Hq this year.

    Really wish cricket would step up the materials. They have some great designs that are just ruined by junky steel and lack of trying quality materials.

    Not lefty friendly. You are too important to not point that out. Wouldn’t call it ugly that you don’t yet but it’s definitely not good.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always point out knives that are ambidextrous as 'good', but lack of lefty accessibility is fine to 90% of people, so I'm not going to drag every knife for it.

    If they didn't use complete trash steel, they would be a damn good brand. But they use blankCrblankMoV steel which is completely horrendous
