That was a total walk back through time - gave me the goosies. To see names of patients and their little belongings still scattered around and in closets - very nostalgic, and a bit haunting. It's great that it has historical status because it really is an amazing structure with so much of the original stuff left - the baths, the ironwork, the detail. Another great tour - thank you!
This was another great vlog! How interesting! It struck me how they've actually preserved this place given the size and almost no earning potential to keep it going. Like walking into a time capsule. Someone left one day and left everything where it was. I like the wallpaper on the ceilings. I got the feeling that everything was done to help these ladies feel better. Their eyes would find flowers on the ceiling and walls. I envisioned such a pleasant environment that the patients would find the strength to nurture each other within these walls. It touched my heart.
I just retired after working 30 years for place called Herman Sanitarium in San Jose California which looks so much like this place we have two women's buildings and one for men it's been in operation for over 70 years and it was started by an RN this place reminds me so much of Herman's
Wow! Jordan you’ve hit the jackpot with this triple bill ! I’m so glad we were able to see her room with you ; and go on the tour ! thanks so much for showing us ! 👍🏻🎬🎥🦁🐶😎💙👍🏻
Thanks for all 3 vlogs Jordan, you can see that the lady who started the place really had a heart for the ladies who stayed there. Some parts seemed sad to me but you know the staff probably tried their best to make it a good experience for those who lived there. Thanks as always for a touching tour.
This was amazing, so interesting. I love that it was a place to go and calm your nerves and be so cozy. Lots of info and just fascinating. Thanks for this Jordan.
This was great! I loved that they have kept it original. I have always wondered who designed the tile patterns and chose the wallpaper, as I grew up in very old homes, and for a while the "rural" life. No plumbing at all. Thanks again for another fantastic trip! 💖💖💖 Laura Odle-Parry 🤗
Nice vlog on Rockhaven. Thanks for allowing us to see through your eyes the history and people that stayed there. It was also interesting to hear the details of Marilyn Monroe’s mother staying there and Billie Burke as well. Hopefully they can donate Billie Burke’s belongings to the newly opened Academy Awards museum since she was a part of Wizard Of Oz history and had quite an acting repertoire that she left behind. ❤️🙏🏻🌈
If you EVER go back I'd love to have a shirt, tote or key chain, I'll pay for it!! Love your videos, I love history, particularly in your area. I should have been born in the early 1900's, as the 20-50's is my absolute favorite time period!! I'm obsessed with this time period, I watch nothing but documentaries and I'm so freaking happy I found your videos!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this with those of us who can't get there!!!
+Susan Irvin actually, if you contact their fb page, they can probably mail anything to you. Tell them you saw my video please! Joanna is very sweet and will likely take care of anything you'd want
WOW 🙀 what an interesting vlog. I'm so glad I was able to find this. I learned something. Is there a book about this place and the people who stayed here. Wow so this is where Marilyn mother was. Never knew Marilyn had a half sister. Good to know her mother didn't die here. Imagine that . Marilyn mother was an escape artist.she got out of that window. I never knew Billy Burke aka Glenda the Good Witch was there. I wonder what happened to her. I can picture her, and hear her saying only bad witches are ugly.. this Vlog might be 4 years old but I'm glad to see it now.septemner 8,2022. Jordan you get to go to some Amazing places and share with us. I'd love to know more about this place.and hear some more amazing stories. Andrew and I used to travel every year. He loved going to California and scuba diving, once he took one of his motorcycles and we just took off. It was fun. Two of the places we loved the most was parts of California, Canada. We still go to Canada.i love Maine too. I love lighthouses. We really haven't traveled much since the pandemic. I'm hoping in October at least we can take a week or 2 off and go somewhere exciting. I haven't decided where yet. I'm still catching up on Vlogs I missed. Happy I can find and watch the ones I have missed. 👍💯❤️👏👏👏. I haven't watched a bad vlog yet. Keep them coming Jordan.i know I'll be watching. So glad my twin started sharing.so happy I subscribed. I can watch when I want and spend hours watching Vlogs from 5 years ago. Again Thanks Jordan. I'd love to be able to do what you do. But hopefully one day I can travel, see all the places and things I want to.💫🤗🕯️🖖🙂👋. Love, respect, and positivity always .vee J.
Billie Burke also played Mrs. Topper in the old Topper movies starring Cary Grant and I don't remember who the actress was who played his wife. Love those movies!
Jordan you outdo yourself. I haven't come across any other vlogger who is so gracious and really tunes into what your viewers like. I thought Marilyn Monroe's mothers room was so small. No wonder she would escape. Some of the wallpaper is very busy. Really rather sad in a way. Thank you dear friend for such informative and historical vlogs....JAHHHHH I miss you!!!
Debra Moeller she was in a private room I’m sure that’s why it was small. Don’t forget it was beautiful in its day and she had a private outside door 🥰.
I was a little trepidatious when I first pressed Play ▶️on this one, but Jordan you didn’t let me down. It is wonderful that at the end of her life, Marilyn’s mother got to stay with her daughter and got better. I wonder if Marilyn or other family members or friends got to visit her while she was there. Thanks for another great one Jordan! 🙋♀️
So glad you were able to come here. I don’t know if you remember me, I met you and Adam at pinks. This is the place I was talking to you about. They’ve done so much cleaning up to this place since I was last there 5 years ago. Looks great!
I’m great, thanks. This place is a real gem definitely deserves to be preserved. Hopefully your series of vlogs will bring Attention and visitors who are interested in it’s preservation. When I first visited it had just been Acquired by the city and had an uncertain future. Glad to see it’s still standing and in better condition than it was❤️ Truly a one of a kind place.
If nobody can go into Billie Burke’s room anymore they need to donate her belonging to a museum, rather than letting them sit there and deteriorate. So sad! 😢
Jordan, once again you have amazed me. Lol. I loved this series on Rockhaven! You always take me to places that I would never know existed. Great job! Thank you. My wish is that every state would have a place like this as opposed to horrible "hospitals". Keep up the good work. I greatly appreciate what you do. By the way, I am still trying to binge watch and get up to date from vlog #1, so bear with me. Lol
Thanks Jordan for sharing this . I have heard about Marilyn Monroe's mother had been in a sanatarium , but I didn't picture it being like this . I pictured it being a lot worse . It's quite beautiful there . I'm sure back in the day it was really a beautiful place . It makes me wonder though , did she really need to be there ? I wonder why Marilyn Monroe didn't keep her at her house and hire a nurse ? Kind of sad . Also I didn't know about the other movie star or famous people lived there. This was all a very interesting story . Would love to visit sometime , but if not at least I got to learn all of this from you . Thanks again Jordan !! Awesome video !!
@@lisellesloan3191 It was actually Gladys' mother, Marilyn's maternal grand mother who tried to kill Marilyn when she was a baby. She had mental problems as well. Marilyn feared being like her grand mother and mother. It turns out that from studies done of Marilyn's behavior she did have a mild case of Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depressive) but they didn't know how to treat it except to have the person committed to an institution. Some people either got better and were able to live in a less restricted facility, or as an out-patient with supervision, or they were committed to a full facility. Marilyn found it hard to deal with her mother's frailties because she feared it in herself. Marilyn was accidently put in the psychiatric ward of The Payne Whitney Clinic in New York when she thought she was just going for mental rest and counselling. She realized she wasn't as bad as her mother and grand mother because she saw people who were worse.
Was that a slip or tongue-in-cheek "infamous" Gladys Healey I have exactly the same pink & black tiles in my bathroom. The apartment building I live in was built just after WW2 so it has lovely varnished wood floors throughout, a marble step up to the bathroom and a hidden ironing board in the wall in the kitchen along with a hidden 6 shelf pantry. Very cool and very beautiful. This place would give me claustophobia, the houses being so close together with little room between to see open spaces. I need space!!!
I have watched this video several ties The architecture, tile work, and how furniture/personal items are cared for/preserved yet accessible, is all so great. I do have a question, What does you mean wen you say "classic?" I have noticed you say it often, in other videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
This was so interesting, thank you for sharing.. 👍 I did feel sad thinking of the patients, I just have a tenderness for elders and the mentally ill.. I know it's a part of life though. 😞
Enjoyed this. Thank you for bringing us here. So this place was like "One Flew Over The Coo Coo's Nest?" No disrespect for the ones who are mentally ill. I think we all can be a little that way at times ~
Marilyn’s half sister, Berniece Miracle, née Baker, was an American writer who actually wrote a book about Marilyn called “My Sister Marilyn” and Marilyn’s half brother, Robert Baker, actually passed away late summer of 1933 at 15 from kidney failure.
Poor Gladys. In a documentary I saw about Rockhaven they said that Marilyn had taken her mother out of another home because it wasn’t up to par but once she put her Mother here, she paid for it, but never came to see her mother 😢 Her half sisters name is Bernice Baker Miracle and her family moved to Texas where her son and family still lives today.
Thank you for this video Jordan... Money can buy these luxuries. I feel so bad for the ones who haven’t been able to afford these things. Instead they walk the streets homeless and die there in many cases. So sad.
Good morning Jordan and Jah! Yet another fascinating vlog. Loved this subject. It's a shame it isn't open more often to help bring in more money. Hope you have a great day!!! 🦁💚forever....
Aww so sad ..but these real life stories are amazing & interesting..love the outside staircase tv .I heard Gladys (Marilyns mum) told someone that Marilyn Monroe was her daughter..they didn't believe her..they thought she was crazy! ... 🙏💕💖.
Great video Jordan, this was a interesting tour....lots of great info. To bad they had to shut down some of the cottages. There would have been a part 3 with so much more to see. Have they ever thought about doing more week end tours?
You tube has a clip of Marilyn's mother in old age....check out Marilyn Monroe Gladys Baker Rare Footage. It's a short clip but it's fascinating to see. She appears as a calm, composed attractive older woman. I see a touch of Marilyn in her but mostly I see Berneice, Marilyn's older half sister. Marilyn also had a half brother who passed away at the age of 14. The father took Berneice and her brother away from Marilyn's mother and moved to Kentucky when they were very young. It's doubtful MM ever met her brother Robert but in baby pictures they look very much alike. It's sad Marilyn never had her siblings close by to lean on and had to live in an orphanage. She would have loved having an older brother in her life.
Great vlogs as always Jordan. The next time you're in Glendale, and you're vlogging about some of the dearly departed Hollywood stars of yesteryear, could you please visit the gifted character actor Dwight Fryes's resting place? He played the role of the tragic Renfield in the 1931 classic horror film, "Dracula".
Thanks for the tour.Found it very interesting about Marilyn Monroes mom.
Yes it is very interesting to watch this tour I was a CNA for a while in a nursing home long time ago be about 30 years
Because I was a nurse, this effected me deeply. I spent many years as a nursing facility nurse. I enjoyed it very much.
Jill Gross I was a STNA for 15 yrs I can understand completely
Bless you ❤
This was another great vlog! How interesting! It struck me how they've actually preserved this place given the size and almost no earning potential to keep it going. Like walking into a time capsule. This is AMAZING! I’ve read about this place! But had no idea they gave tours!!!
Fascinating! Thank you, Jordan!

Marylin's mother outlived her famous daughter that is for sure
Awesome! Thank you, Jordan!!!
This was so interesting! What a neat place. Jordan! your videos just get better and better!!

If nobody can go into Billie Burke’s room anymore they need to donate her belonging to a museum, rather than letting them sit there and deteriorate. So sad! 😢
April Hylan.. I agree with you. They should donate Billie Burkes belongings to the newly opened Academy Awards museum which opened this year 2022.

Good evening Jordan I like that video you're showing on the sanitarium keep up the good work keep making them

Bonnie Brown Marilyn tried to take care of her but her mom had severe breakdowns and couldn't cope with living in the outside world.
A little research would answer your question.
Gladys needed expert care for her severe mental problems. Marilyn paid for her mother's care and did what she could.
Great vlog Jordan !!!!! So interesting I really enjoyed the Rockhaven videos !!! Thanks so much !!
Awesome! Great location and history here!
Terrific video! Like the music in the back ground.

I really enjoyed the series you made of Rockhaven! You did a great job!

I have watched this video several ties
The architecture, tile work, and how furniture/personal items are cared for/preserved yet accessible, is all so great.
I do have a question, What does you mean wen you say "classic?"
I have noticed you say it often, in other videos.
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
Rockhaven seem like an unlikely place for a sanitorum. I loved the stories.
Very cool Jordan! Love the old bathrooms. We have a lot of those here in Florida. Until the flippers destroy them all, that is!
I loved this series! Thank you👍🏼
Thank you for this so interesting as always xx
Jordan you really out did yourself with this 3 part vlog!!! Loved all of them. ❤❤❤ Until tomorrow! 😎 2B a 🦁❤

On M.M., her family in particular, and their life, it would be anonymity-consignment had they not been more obviously interconnected in the flesh.
Got round to seeing it at last, how interesting. If only the walls could talk. Thank you again for 2 days and 3 vlogs of old history.
+Jakki and Buddy you're very welcome
ok that was so very cool!
Thanks for the tour.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching

Thank you for a great video!
I’ve been to the Botel in Fire Island. Fire island is in New York, but the guide failed to mention that.
This is the California I always hoped to find.
