    There were a lot of iron mines in the area back to colonial times. That trail on the stone wall (@6:39) is actually the remnants of narrow gauge rail tracks that carried iron ore carts to the foundries. They built those to level the track rather than going up an down the hollows with full carts.
    As a matter of fact, George Washington had huge chains built with local ore to put across the Hudson to block the British ships from easily sailing up the river. I believe one was right near the zoo at Bear Mtn. A piece of the chain is at West Point.

    (6:06-7 ) mark. Here in Florida we have one that's close to this one. We call them , Leopard Frogs . You will find them around wet areas. Two ways to stay a little cooler. The old fashion way it to put green leaves under your hat. YEP , It does work. Have done it a lot when wearing a straw hat in younger days. The other , get a hat from Mission towels , wet it and as it evaporates it will help to cool you. Yep, I also do that and it does help.

    One of my favorite man made things on the AT, after the attacks the smoke from the buildings was visible for days from all of the vistas along the at in the northern part of NY.

    The day turned out so pretty for you even tho it was so hot. I believe that rock wall was part of a narrow gauge RR track that was used to transport harvested timber used in the ship building industry back in the day.

    "stone wall" that the trail goes on is actually an old railroad bed from a mining railroad.

    Hey Jay. It was nice meeting you when you were finishing up your lunch. It was definitely a pretty brutal day. Glad to see you made it to RPH. After I spent the night at Graymoor, I headed back north and hiked to RPH shelter. The Boy Scouts were there when I got there also. I had a pizza delivered to the shelter that night. LOL. When I headed back to my truck at Canopus Lake, I did swing by that new shelter. Very nice but very out of the way with no water nearby without walking to the concession area. Maybe they'll develop it more over the years and reroute the trail but until then, it seems to be a shelter of last resort. Keep pointing north...

    I felt for you in that heat and humidity. We've been doing training hikes down here in Alabama and the struggle is real. I enjoyed seeing that Catalpa bloom. We had a tree in our yard when I was a kid and we called it the "popcorn tree." Stay safe! Thank you for sharing your journey!

    The painted flag is in memory of September 11, 2001 not 2011 @9:40. That is why I wish people wouldn't shorten it to 9/11 because it should be honored correctly.

    I wish people would keep the graffiti in the hoods and not the woods. Old gory/ the scars and gripes belongs on flags in town, not painted on sacred mountains rocks.

    • @frolege1
      @frolege1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something tells me you're not educate about the history of graffiti Brad. Graffiti has been around in "non-hoods" areas for centuries. Educate yourself Bradly. I'm sure you've carved your initials in a tree trunk at sone point in your life. Thanks an example of graffiti or maybe you did something to your school desk. Wake up Brad.

    Hiking without a hat will reduce your body temperature. Get a visor instead.

      Maybe a buff would help. Ticks would be a risk without a head covering.
