  • In this video, I demonstrate the preparation of rawhide strings for braiding while discussing some of the nuances that I think are important.
The video starts out with me doing the math for determining the body string width. I have a core that measures 3/8" in diameter, and I want a 12 strand body. After determining what width they need to be, I get to splitting, cutting, and beveling my strings.

You do a good job with your video, good explanation and clear audio. Is that a Len Yule string worker or did you make it up yourself. Congratulations on your graduation from vet school. Greetings from Queensland Australia.

hi Eli, the second tool you used is not the one used by LEN YULE? or did you make it? because I am making one that is the hansen string cutter !!! And it's taking me a long time lol. but the market price is at least $ 600dls !!! I think it's worth doing it hahaha, I really like your work, you should make more videos !!! What no one has told me of all those I have asked! How do they give that nice yellow color to rawhide ??? Mmmm in short, very good jobs that you have done Eli !!! Greetings from SONORA MEX ...

Hi, Job! Thanks for the comment. The string cutter and beveler I use are both made by a guy that Len Yule uses. I bought them both new from him, but I'm not sure if he has any more for sale.
I plan on making plenty more videos as I get time. I'm just busy, so they're kind of slow going currently.
As far as the yellowness of the hide goes, it's mostly a characteristic of the specific hide. Most animals with red hair are going to make a more yellow hide. I process mine using lime and vinegar, but I don't think it makes any difference in the color aside from getting rid of all the hair.

@@RawhideEli Well, I hope and you have more time to make more videos because I really like them a lot like this Mexican Swivel Honda (Popsicle Honda) - Start to Finish, and Multiple string nouse botton!!! Your jobs do not ask anything of a gaucho rawhide job !!! And I know many Argentines, Chileans, Brazilians and my father who do sooo good jobs!!! Greetings again my friend ...

It's an Osborne 86 8" model. You can check out Bruce Johnson's shop to get a nice used splitter for cheaper than brand new. That's where I got mine
