I was assigned to listen to this song by my professor. Three years later and I'm listening by choice. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful ❤ Thanks Mr. HAYDN
It sounds elegant and peaceful. Perfect harmony. The writer of this piece is grateful at the moment and he wants to express his feelings through music. Wise, wise man.
Its moving for a reason: this quartet was composed by Haydn, at the court of Esterhazy, to contribute to the Austrian cause against the imminent Napoleonic invasion, to animate and reawaken a feeling of moving attachment to the homeland. The compositions was so pleasing to the emperor Francis of Austria that he made it the imperial anthem
Dave Berryngton The reason the anthem came about was because Haydn was deeply moved by the effect of God Save the King in England that he had heard frequently throughout his two long visits to London - he reported this back to Vienna on his return. Just to be accurate: from the death of Prince Nicholas I in 1790 until his own death in 1809, Haydn was only nominally ‘...at the court of Eszterhaza’. Though the family kept him on with a pension and a number of other benefits, he was in effect, as freelance a composer as Beethoven, but with the sort of security Beethoven himself sought. Haydn composed the last six masses for the family over these years but nothing else, the relationship was mutually beneficial. Haydn was not the only composer - or arranger - writing national anthems at this time, for example: Paisiello wrote his Inno al Re (Hymn to the King) in 1787 for his own country, The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The words were an identical translation of the English words - ‘Iddio preservi il Re’ (sometimes ‘...conservi il Re’). Rather differently, in 1792, the French Republican anthem was silently stolen from Viotti’s Tema e Variazione in D (1781), and supplied with suitably revolutionary words by Rouget de Lisle; it too was formally adopted as the French anthem in 1795. There were others too around this time; others, like in the US came much later.
One of the finest single movements of any work to ever emerge from the German/Austrian classical period... it is simply a spiritual piece - divine in every regard.
Haydn was motivated to write this theme for the Austrian Emperor after his time in England exposed him to the English anthem, God Save the King. It was for a time used as the National anthem of Austria, but later replaced. It did not become the German National Anthem until 1922. IIRC the theme was also used in a Protestant hymn.
The German version is Deutschland Deutschland Uber Alles. Before that it was the nation anthem of the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary. That version was God save Kaiser Franz.
How good the viola sounds in the third movement, the sound is quite rich and emotional. Haydn didn't forget to turn on the lights for every instrument in the quartet, including the viola.
I’m listening to this after the atrocious Vienna shooting when the orchestra played on as those who were leaving the Opera House at the time were ushered back into the building for safety. God bless the victims and the musicians who played this, Haydn’s beautiful composition, once the national anthem of Austria.
You can tell that in this quartet, the writer is trying to express his feelings. The notes that are being played and the tone of the quartets display that the artist is very calm and happy because that what the sound portrays. Many composer express their feelings like this or maybe even are trying to tell a story through music.
Some words about the history of the text of the German National Anthem: "Germany over everything" can easily be misunderstood. It was especially misunderstood by the English before World War I, although it was not a national anthem at the time, and it was abused by the Nazis. By this is meant "over everything" the poet 1841: Germany over Bavaria, Germany over Hamburg, over Prussia, over Saxonia etc. It was not meant, "Germany over France, over England etc.". It was directed inward as an invitation to patriotism inward to regain the state unity that Napoleon had destroyed in 1806.
@A Mind For Business You really don't get it? The text was written before germany existed. If you would know just a little bit about european history, you wouldn't say such bs. Germany was seperated in many small states, but the people wanted it to be one whole country.
@A Mind For Business the 2 lines past that are important for understanding: "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, Über alles in der Welt, Wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze Brüderlich zusammenhält," for my interpretation that means, that Germany will withstand all threats when holding together as one united nation, and i think that was the intention behind these lines and thats why i dont understand why this verse is sort of "forbidden" in germany, cause there nothing "nazi" in it, but strenghten the unity. "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" (Unity, justice, freedom) are the three pillars of the federal republic. seems the decades after the lost WWII with all its terrible atrocities have stolen any identity and pride from the nation.

I didnt know this quartet (the people) before, but its the best version i could find in 30 Minuten TH-cam browsing. Good tempo.
Germany Anthem! I very suprised to know that Haydn also writted this wonder!
he only used the theme
The melodies are used in the anthem. Remember that not all anthem tunes were originally composed for the anthem. For example "The Star-Spangled Banner" is set in slightly modified "To Anacreon in Heaven" tunes.
He used the melody of his hymn (or anthem) to the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. The rest of the movement uses variations on the melody. So the anthem came first and Haydn decided it would make a good tune for variations in his quartet.
Writted?
It was also the last music he ever played. In May 1809 he played it with great feeling on the piano and then collapsed and was carried to his bed, where he died a few days later.
