This was my childhood. Chip's Challenge, Rodents Revenge and Castle of the Winds I & II. I played them all the time. They're such wonderful games!
PPSSSTTT, it's on steam, remastered, along with a second one. AND A LEVEL EDITOR! AND RUNS ON MODERN OPERATING SYSTEMS! WOWZERS
and there is also Mods, so you can have the classic sounds affects and graphics from windows or lynxs version too!!!
Steam version now has the old Windows version too. There's even an option to turn off smooth scrolling. It practically recreates the old play style too.
Wow thanks man
THANK YOU!
If it ain't playing midi sounds through the tiny motherboard speaker I ain't playin 😤
For anyone interested, this game is now on Steam and at the time of writing, free to own
I played Chips Challenge when I was a lot younger (maybe 8 or 9 years old - I'm 23 now). I still have all the level passwords I wrote down all those years ago. Fantastic game. :)
you know, the name didnt really ring a bell so when you started with "you'll remember this!" I was pretty doubtful. Then I saw that god damn sprite again and it suddenly came back in a rush. I played the crap out of that thing when I was like... 6?
The DOS version is Steve Urkel's Challenge.
This was the only game on my high schools library computer, we only had one of them with it installed.....so we would have a signup sheet, was such a fun game back then :)
I don't remember my childhood, just this game.
Justin Keys You should probably go see a doctor about that.
Ah, I can still remember the combinations of movement when going through the ice mazes!
It was just the down button over and over.
Wow. I completely forgot I played this game or even that this game existed. Thanks LGR for the nostalgia trip.
Oh wow, the song you chose at the end... got major flashbacks to my Windows 95 days when it came with these MIDI tunes. I had no idea why, but I loved listening to them as a kid.
Nice review, Thanks. Now go try Chuck's Challenge, and meet Woop.
I can't believe your comment has been here all this time and nobody has said thank YOU for Chip's Challenge (and Chuck's Challenge too). Believe it or not, I bought a Lynx when it came out expressly to play Chip's Challenge and never regretted it. It's remains the best puzzle game I have ever played (and I've played just about everything in my 35+ years with computers and video game consoles). Thank you, Chuck.
+Golan Klinger I'm glad you enjoyed it!
+Chuck Sommerville And now I'm about to enjoy Chip's Challenge 2! I had no idea it existed until TH-cam recommended a video about it. Wow! More of what I love! After watching I signed up with Steam, purchased the Chip's Challenge Bundle and put the kettle on. I know what I'm doing for the next few hours. Thank you AGAIN!
Nah, Rommy's Gauntlet.
Yes, i was hoping you would do this. I played the hell out this game when i was little. I remember the green monsters would scare me. My older brother knew the codes to all the high levels.
One of my favorite games as a kid. Thanks for a great review LGR!
Haha that "bummer" is so deadpan
This game was fun to solve in Windows 3.1. There were so many levels that it was crazy. My younger brother and I teamed up to solve each level and write all the passwords on paper. We didn't have Internet service to cheat with.
when I was going through old videos on tape to capture them and turn them digital for my Mom and Dad I discovered a 5 year old me playing on an old windows 95 PC playing chips challenge, damn, I remember making it all the way to level 88 as a kid, came back to it as an adult and I still as challenging as when I was a child. I was actually pretty good at this game as a 5 year old.
Awesome review. I remember playing this back in '97 on Window 95
oh wow, I had completely forgotten about this game. so many hours playing this as a kid ... I was awful at it but it was indeed fun.
Been waiting a long time for this one. So many hours as a kid both playing this and watching my mom play. She was more hooked on it than I was back then!
This game was the best! Thanks for the review, it brought back a lot of good memories.
Lol I busted out laughing when he put Q from STTNG in there XD
Damnit man!! I shed a tear... I was looking for this game since two years back but couldn't remember the name!!!
THANK YOU!
I loved this game! I used to play it on our family gateway all the time. The ms entertainment pack was was awesome! It's what got me into gaming if you can believe it!
chip's box photo looks like gaming historian! :P
thanks for reviewing this! so much nostalgia!
I wish they would have kept the animations!
BUMMER
Most nostalgic game of my childhood
I had this on my first home PC, this video awoke a feeling of nostalgia buried deep in my memories
I used to play around with a "Chip's Challenge" editor a few years ago, and that was actually incredibly fun;
it was very satisfying to place objects and enemies all over the place, and then test those levels.
If only there was a way to get this frickin' thing to work on modern systems that DOESN'T involve DOSBox or Steam...
I haven't seen this video yet, but I saw the name, and instantly remembered this game from my childhood! Can't wait to watch XD

When did Chip become Steve Urkel?
I've been waiting for this review :D Easily one of my favourite childhood games. Wasted soooo many hours on this back in the day.
Wow the lack of animation really does my eyes in
I had this on a little NEC machine from the 98 era that had a tiny, blurry as hell screen. It actually helped.
And especially the lack of any kind of scrolling
Steam version fixes all of that. It looks really good.
Chip's Challange just came out for the Switch for about $3! I was so excited to see it pop up looking though the shop :)
Hey! My name's Malinda!
And this sounds exactly like what I do to select friends.
Malinda Stadter k
Put them in saw style death traps?
Dude.
I loved this game when I was a kid. :)
Oh my god, I had forgotten about this game! Thanks for the wave of nostalgia!
That amazing feeling of seeing an LGR video in your sub box.
John DeLancie out of freaking nowhere!
I first played the Windows version of Chip's Challenge on my Dad's Windows 95 PC, that came with Best Of Entertainment. 3 years ago I bought the Lynx version, owning a Lynx II. The version of Chip's Challenge on my Dad's PC didn't have the Canyon.mid song, but I understand some versions do have, I heard it playing right at the end of this video, I wonder why only some versions came with that MIDI file.
Every version of the game didn't include Canyon.mid, the game did play Canyon.mid IF you had Windows 3.1 -> Windows 2000, Canyon.mid is on the Windows folder, so, if you had Canyon.mid on the Windows folder, it did play thru the game.
Power Gamer BR
Canyon.mid! Thats the song that introduced me to MIDI and MIDI editing on Windows 95..... Holy cow thats awesome. Thanks for identifying it again and thanks LGR for including it!
The Chip's Challenge Lynx/ST version opening made me laugh so hard. "Crunchies his pretzles" had me dying.
There's a Chip's Challenge level editor now-a-days and yes. I use to play this game a lot when I was young.
Awww yeah! Thanks for the nostalgia! Those bug monsters inspired the same kind of panic, in me as that abominable butt-bag of a snowman at the end of Ski-free.
I had a Lynx as a kid, and this game for it. Loved it, played it for hours and hours at a time. Still love the theme tune now.
Chip's Challenge was the greatest game I ever played in my childhood, well that and Ski Free. :D
i got all the way to level 90 and my friend wanted to play so i let him then he accidentally deleted my game, i still cant forgive him.
you cant forgive him because you killed him right?
'deleted my game' but it has passwords
so re-download it/install from cd -w-
"Accidentally deleted my game", you sure it wasn't on purpose?
To delete a saved game, all you'd have to do is press F2 or choose a new game.
I've watched this video already but as you know I'm a relative late comer to the comment scene but that's one retro PC you've got there Clint!
Ah, nostalgia. One of the first PC games I ever played.
I remember playing this game on a computer we in the family owned at some point around 2000ish. That version actually did have a level editor. Which was useful, because I wasn't able to clear level 9. It also had a level around the 50s that was completely empty, leaving me to edit in a level-clear object. After that, it had around 100 more levels until the preexisting levels were over.
As a 3D modeler, I found the password for the "BRUSHFIRE" level way funnier than I should have.
The Atari Lynx version is my favorite version, to be honest.
Great review! I played this game so much :D
omg, I remember this game. oh god, the memories...
Loved that game growing up!!!! Thanks Clint!!
OH DEAR GOD I ACTUALLY USED TO PLAY THIS!! OH DEAR GOD THE NOSTALGIA!!!!
There was definitely a level editor and level packs for the Windows version available in the late 90s through a Chip’s Challenge newsgroup. My cousin and I used to make levels for each other.
I've actually only played the Lynx version. Have it sitting on my shelf right now. Great game.
Needs a remake made in that box art style.
Your right, that last one was the one i remember, we might of had the entertainment pack, i remember all those other games too.
Man the memories of this game I use to play this when I was younger on Windows 95
I had a Lynx and this game so it was the first time I saw the game.
the outro music reminds me of the midi demo music that came with my sound blaster.
He's right. I loved the background music
Loved this when I was younger!
I've invested a good amount of hours into this game and as of right now I don't have a way of playing it, but hopefully I'll be able to play it some time later in my life.
It's on Steam!
store.steampowered.com/app/346850/
i used to play this game on my dad's office, what a nostalgic
It's about anytime that Hollywood probably would make a movie version of Chip Challenge.
Oh my god my nostalgia. I was 6 and loved this game on Windows 3.1.
omfg this brings back my childhood
I remember playing this on my dad's pc at work.good times the 90s.
Played Chips Challange quite a bit at my elementary school days :) (The WEP version)
chip's challenge is awesome, it's the one reason you'd want to emulate Windows 3.1 through dosbox.
i remember me and my dad beat this game when i was a kid and we wrote down all the level codes so we wouldn't have to beat it if we every had the pc break
man this brings back memories...
This soooo cool that you have all of this stuff!
It really sucks when you beat student loans, thinking you beat the game and then walks in Q the real final boss. doh!
It reminds me of Pokemon, maybe this is what inspired the ice skating puzzles in Pokemon.
Burn it so I can use surf, I hate those
nah.. the 'ice skating puzzles' were in a game already by this point, at least one - just can't remember what it was called
Oh man I had this game! My grandma had it on disk for Windows 98. I played the absolute crap out of this when I was like 9 or 10. This or Mahjong, and Nirvana or Alice in Chains was a great chunk of my time with that old refurbished Compaq.
Reminds me of Rescue Rover, I'm sure tile puzzler games like this were a dime a dozen.
This game was the only thing I'd play on my old computer!
I remember playing this on my grandparent's computer in Tennessee. Memories.
OMG I REMEMBER THIS.....
I NEVER KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING
Oh boy - I played the DOS version for countless hours :)
oh snap! right in the nostalgia :D
Holy shit, I used to love this game. It was one of the only ones on the school computer and I played the crap out of it.
omg I miss this game so much! I loved playing this when I was a kid. I still have it but my old Atari Lynx is busted so I haven't been able to play it since I was like 6 years old. :(
Played the hell out of this game back in the day.
I remember me playing this game a long time ago with my friends around taking turns beating levels like it was the most hardcore game ever.
AWW YISS! LGR REVIEWS CHIP'S CHALLENGE!
Great game! It actually inspired me to write a fanfiction about B.J. Blazkowiz/Doomguy trapped in a supercomputer.
All those hours mashing the arrow keys repeatedly.. inadvertently improving my number pad-using speed :)
Chuck's Challenge improves upon the flaws of the original game (except for the controls) by making them smaller, more about logical thinking rather than trail and error, and providing a fair challenge that doesn't involve mazes or time limits. Also if you die or make a mistake, you can use the rewind feature to undo your actions and try again. Also, not only does it have a level editor, but it also has a community that lets you share them online.
Probably being lazy here, what is the midi track at the end? I recognise it but not where it is or where from.
Also, have a copy of Evolution (Now M-audio) midi editing software to review? I'd love to get my hands on a copy that which isn't "gold studio" which appears to be a different/more updated version.
Because, 3 years later, I still had to go searching to find it, I'll post the answer here:
canyon.mid
Cool. I had no idea Chips Challenge existed on other platforms. I downloaded a similar game for iOS called RodentRush.
I was just talking about chips challenge with my friend last week. :D
Pretty sure I got this game in one of those 1, 2, 300+ game disk sets. Little did I know most of the games were demo's, and I think I tried actually paying for the full version one time but the company was defunct.
At least it was only like $5 for it.
I must have had 100's of hours into this game, and kept a document with all of the level passcodes. (no internet.. heh..) It is still one of my favorite puzzle games of all time.
I used to play this game as a little girl. I like to think this the reason I fell in love with the puzzle game genre.
