When I was very young, maybe 6 or 7, I had a Disney, or maybe it was Fischer-Price record player, and a set of the Brandenburg concertos on vinyl. For whatever reason #3 has always been my favorite since then, I would listen to it over and over again. I'm in my 40s now and have heard this music probably 1000+ plus times. Just listened to it 4 more times before writing this. Never seems to get old for me.
There are hundreds of thousands of words in the English language, yet no single combination of them could express how much I hate the ad right before the harpsichord solo
Sebastien, i'm with You, They should let us choose when and what ads to watch! always monetize, monetize, monetize, you'd think they were the ones playing the Brandenburg, (who got paid zilch?) since when is it OK to break in midstream?
Herr Richter not only can play the harpsichord but can also conduct at the same time. I believe he wishes he's got four arms. As for the concerto, what a joy!!! Ausgezeichnet!!!
Richter adds a sense of power, weight, urgency and ENERGY to Bach. His instruments are not historically correct, and apparently the concertos are supposed to be much slower, filled with random jarring rubato so you can't get into a groove, and vastly smaller than the used by Richter and the Munchener Barackorchester. However, I find most "historically informed performances" of Bach to be boring, irritating intellectual jerk-off fests where points are kept on paper by people with large textbooks at hand.
You know what, I wonder what dictates that. This performance utilizes a lot more instruments than the other live versions I've been able to find on TH-cam. That might be why. It's just got such a full sound, almost too full. For me, the Freiburger Barockorchester has to be my favorite. I think that's only because they play it the fastest, lol. Only about 11 people playing there, while the Richter version has like, 20+ performers. Not to mention a Richard Nixon look alike. :P

Wow!!! Amazing!! I wish ALL CONDUCTORS were required to play an instrument as the cost of admission to lead. LOL!! That room full of art, music, history, and culture feels so cozy. So much warmer than any symphony hall. BRAVO!!! I wonder how many takes they did to get all this footage. I like to think they took at least 5 takes. And after each one, the director asked everyone if they'd liked to do another take, and each time ALL the musicians were like 'HELLS YES!'. This room is awesome, sitting next to me are the most elite musicians I know, and I worked DAMN hard practicing all those hours alone just to get to this level. Not to mention that this suit is a rental, and so I fully intend to get my bloody monies worth, innit!
By listen to their breathtaking performance , we will experience the atmosphere of a profound spiritual world . From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵 Which national are you watching this video ?
Is the word "thousands" strange to describe this performance? Then again, to reach this degree of proficiency, one can only imagine the number of hours.
When this was recorded, it was the standard interpretation of BWV 1048. Most contemporary (not "modern") recordings follow the original instrumentation based on the score which calls for 3 parts for each of the 3 instruments. Richter is to be commended in his handling of the 2nd movement "Adagio" which in the original score consists of only two notes, but is here a solo improvisation. My only criticism is the overuse of trills.
No one seems t be mentioning that at 5;20 or just before, there are a few notes that have disappeared, like the film broke? and 8 frames went missing when it was spliced back together.!
@MarkGond - From Wikipedia: "The second movement [of BWV 1048] consists of a single measure with the two chords that make up a 'Phrygian half cadence' and although there is no direct evidence to support it, it is likely that these chords were meant to surround or follow a cadenza improvised by the harpsichord or a solo violin player. Modern performance approaches range from simply playing the cadence with minimal ornamentation (treating it as a sort of "musical semicolon"), to inserting movements from other works, to cadenzas varying in length from under a minute to over two minutes (...)."
Richter is he, the bassouleum of the unageing intellect! In short, Richter is the Prince of orchestra!
This is the recording I come back to time and time again. There have been thousands of interpretations of this piece and they’re all brilliant. But Richter’s stands above the rest.
I agree that this is one of the best, if not THE best. BUT....look up the Apollo's Fire version. It is played in A420 rather than A440, and on period instruments. And, most importantly, not double voiced (as it was scored). You might like it better.
@@justinnoble6506Thanks for the suggestion. Apollo's Fire at 420 on baroque instruments sounds better, but I didn't like the way they dragged out some of the chords to give them an accent. Also, didn't like how they just ran straight into the third movement without so much as a pause.
I am from Venezuela and when I stated to listen to classical music in El Sistema. It's Director José Antonia Abreu Loved JS Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 His brother Abraham Abreu was an accomplished Clavichord player. JS Bach is the Greatest of all. I cried with joy and happiness when I went to Eisenach at his birth home. I also love the concerto for 2 Violins.
I should propose that since Richter is partially conducting and partially playing he called for the second Harpsichord in order to ensure the execution of its part....
This is easily one of the greatest pieces of music to ever be written and performed. I live for Bach.
i thought you were more into Vivaldi

Get TH-cam premium! I've had it for years now and it's the last payment I would cancel, second only to the connection to internet itself of course.

Karl Richter one of the great specialists for Baroque Music ... Pity that he left this earth so young ... He's greatly missed .
Yes, so sad.
I'm sure he's on the other side. Maybe Bach asked the Lord to bring him up so they could work together.
@@skykiss12 Yeah, He kinda looks like Jack Nicholson.
God called him to play the cembalo in the Heaven
Yes I agree!I saw him during my childhood in Munich!Very impressive!❤❤
I come back. How could I ever leave. 70 plus years takes you many places. And here I am. Just the most beautiful place I know.
After hearing every Brandenburg performance out there like 7 million times, Karl Richter's is the one I connect to the most.

Es ist immer wunderbar die Muenchener Bach Orchester zu hoeren. (auch, die pianist ist sehr schoen)
Some years ago I read a comment: Brndenburg Concerto No.3 is a miracle of German Barock Music.
It's the First Brandenburg Concerto the one that is a miracle because it disposed of violins
I am so happy many of us love Karl Richter. He's got it down to a Tee!! Bloody amazing, mind blowing magic
I love Ritcher's face when he is conducting... He looks so atractive and powerful conductor.
Karl Richter’s interpretation of the Brandenburg concertos is superb! He has to be one of the best harpsichord musicians of the modern era!

Richter was the premier conductor of the Brandenburg concertos. His legacy will endure for a long time!
A very, very long time for sure. His Brandenburg #2 is part of the Voyager Golden Record.

This is played with an almost "mathematical" precision ... SUPERB !
I always come back to this performance!
This edition is actually in tune, in G major as is stated as the intended key, rather than in F sharp major as is it often performed.
Hmm that means it is tuned to modern "A" 440, in the Baroque era "A" was lower in pitch, as we know from some still extant pipe organs.
Sublime....sublime Bach e sublime Richter

The harpsichord is used for basso continuo in this piece. It's not a harpsichord concerto so it's not dominant.

Dang. Dude can harpsichord and conduct at the same time. Wonderful performance overall!! I just love the Brandenburg concertos
I like how you just turned that word into a verb. I might steal that :P
***** Peripheral vision is a skill we musicians learn to master.
And if that wasn't impressive enough, the entire second movement was completely improvised.
It seems like at the time, the concept of conductor didn't exist, and the continuo had the role of coordinating everyone
I totally agree Sara!
12:13 This is the sound of a clean room.
Karl Richter' s version is the one that truly touches my heart every time I listen to it.
Two Harpsichords?! Can someone explain that?
This is such a ridiculously good performance, so vibrant! The rock and roll of 1730s!
I should propose that since Richter is partially conducting and partially playing he called for the second Harpsichord in order to ensure the execution of its part....
Harpsichords are also fairly quiet too, it's hard to hear throughout the performance.
This is a doubled chamber orchestra….2x the normal instruments for a fuller sound.
4:22 props to the underappreciated second harpsichordist
Yes, although it's all a well-staged playback à la Karajan, in case you hadn't noticed.
This the tempo or performance style I grew up with...not so rushed as you hear in present day performances.
Most of them being italians. My favorite is Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert
Richter’s solo into the Allegro (6:10) is unlike what most harpsichordist’s play today!
