I was taught in diesel tech that the bearing retaining ring was called a wedding ring. And that bottom half on the bearing once you line up the ring notch the other side of that bearing you need to snap in past the shoulder of the block edge before you put bearing cap on, once you snap it past that edge the bearing usually stays fine to get the bearing cap on.

I started working as an apprentice for Cummins in 1969 and spent most of my life working on them. The style of bearnig with the wedding band retainer goes way back before 1969.
The easy way to install these is to place the lower bearing shell in the wedding band side then hold the center of the shell up while placing a "lady slipper" bar, or large screwdriver or similar in the other side main bolt hole in the block and apply pressure against the shell. Shell should snap right in place and stay there. Takes longer to write this than to do it.

yup I figured it out real quick, after some swearing☻

  • @stevewesley8187

Bearing tangs are for location in the housing bore - bearing crush locks the bearings in place . Once proper crush is lost due to improper housing bore size , spun bearing results regardless of tangs / locating device .

Good thing you are a patient man! 😂 I don’t remember swearing that much when I rolled bearings in my Cummins, but that was over 20 years ago, maybe I forgot. I do remember being sore after torquing the main caps though.

The ring that holds the bearing in place is called a "wedding band" every small cam, big cam, N14 ran that setup. It's different but does the job. Also spun mains on a cummins are few and far between. Just wait until you get the opprutunity to replace the cam bearings, that will be a good video!!

@@Jpaydirt The tool is about 5ft long to drive the bearings in and out, you got to pull no.7 forward or it will damage the freeze plug and the engine will leak oil out of the bell housing. Also the bearings are numbered, put them in wrong and you wont get oil to the rocker arms, dont line them up properly and you will spin a cam bearing, ect, ect. Alot of b.s. just so it doesn't have to use an injection pump.

You should have asked how to do that job as you fought it more than you should have. I always tuck the long leg up in the top as far as it will go first the push it around until the bearing snaps on the washer. Then you stick the cap on straight and run the bolts in finger tight and square. Then take the hand sledge and bash the cap home right in. The center with one shot. Then you can run the bolts the rest of the way in.

    • @Jpaydirt
      @Jpaydirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

well I started on the worst one first, when I opened the bearings some of them were jammed together and I mean jammed, like they were packing a box of cigarettes so the one I was installing was a bit stretched so every time it snaped in it would snap out with the slightest of disturbance, after this one they went fine, I had er dicked

I always put the bearing in the cap and the wedding ring on the bolts and slapped them in, we used STP and plenty of it . Never had a problem with them seating in. Always ran the caps up with a impact, a little at a time then toured them in. The first time is to get all the extra lube out and preload the cap, second time is too set the cap and bearing in place. Good luck.

    Well-
-I'm glad my bottom end on my n14 still has 32 lb of pressure above a 850 RPM. I'm not so sure about my top end cuz even when I'm down and out for the whole summer not working I'm down a gallon of coolant...
I choose the Cummins N14 because it gets better mileage than the Caterpillar ls I drove, on 50/50!after fuel compensation packages, and it has more power than the Detroit. Need I even mentioned Volvo?
If I were hauling heavy AND getting properly paid for hauling the weight for a 5-mile per gallon engine then may choose Caterpillar.
However, with the intermodal freight I haul, it's more dependent on customer and time frame than it is on weight so why do I bother with even anything over 30,000 lb?
I don't know how much in frame costs in labor but it can't be that much less than just renting a Gantry crane and pulling the engine out and putting in a used one. If the typical priced used one one on EBay last 12 months while you working on the one you pulled out, it's essentially paid for itself.

It's more the process to getting to be an engineer is what's changed. 50-60 years ago many engineers started on the factory floor at the bottom like everybody else and over 20-30 years they worked their way up the ranks and progressed into design/development if they choose that path. Basically they were on the tools for a significant time before they moved onto design.
Now it seems to be high school to college/university to the drafting room.

No you put 1 thrust bearing the cap and let the other one rest on the main bearing and when you get the cap up past the rear housing just giggle the cap and the other thrust bearing will fall right on the cap and start the bolts a little and hold up against the cap and tap with a hammer to seat the cap Thanks Robert

Cummins techs.. would you when doing the Number 7 main cap.. have the number 6 cylinder positioned at Bottom dead center or somewhere down there to give you more room instead of being against the counterweight..
jeff.. what ever that white grease is you used.. is that cummins spec.. i only do gasoline engines and i only use Staylube Moly graphite assembly lube.. including on my valve stems and a little under the seals as a reservoir.. i have had white lithium grease gear harder when exposed to the air ..

Thanks Old Pete, I started on the hardest one, the bearing was a bit stretched from being dropped kicked by ups and compacted the bearings together, dam thing kept popping out, after I figured out how to make it work the rest went pretty easy, you been doing it for a long time, This is my first Cummins with the wedding bands, so I've consumated the deal and would now be a bit quicker and with 49% less swear words. it was still funny, I laughed at myself as I watched the footage, I could of edited out the stuff that made me look virgin ish lol but I chose to show it, hope you got a laugh too

Cummins is odd, 80's Cummins was extremely odd. Low flow cooling systems, low pressure lube oil systems. Have to set the crank to adjust the valves for each cylinder, rather than 2 positions like everyone else, gets tiresome on a 12 cylinder engine. I've never been into the bottom of one and now I'm glad.

I hate when engineering tries to reinvent the wheel. The bearing tangs have been working for 75 years and then a brainiac comes along and tries a new science project.

First I want to say I, not a Cummins fan but Caterpillar will not give us truck engines anymore. The N 14 was known for having main bearing problems some series were worse than others some have no issues. The problem is main bearing fretting. I suspect that the engine you have may be suffering from this problem. If it is after putting the new main bearing in the engine it will run a short amount of time and the crank will cees in the block. This is a common problem within 14 when people change the main bearings without realizing they have a main bearing fretting issues. When this happens the engine is scrap as both the crank in the block are damaged. If the engine block has a fretting problem the block can be machine and line board to alleviate the problem saving the engine block and crank. I am not saying you have this problem but I am very suspicious that this engine has a fretting issue. You should of plastic gage all main bearings prior to final assembly with the new bearings it may give you a hint of what is going on.
    Best of luck

I thought the pete dumping rig had a cat engine not a cummings my bad! I didnt know california outlawed cummings engines too, I guess only horse and buggies are acceptable for ca emissions.

This reminds me of going from Cummins to working on Cats and the first time stringing up the rocker arm assembly on the 7 liter engines....rubber bands, really???!!! There is no perfect engine and when you work on a lot of them, you realize they could easily make a perfect engine, but they like screwing with mechanics so the tradition continues haha!

We ran QSK 78’s in our mining haul trucks. 12 turbos buried on top and one side pistons were larger than the other for balance.
