  • Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone! This year I decided to treat my girl right and so I finally got a new stereo in the C5 Corvette (also some tint, but I don't think y'all need a video for that)! I hope you guys enjoy the upgrade and the video - this seemingly simple project ended up being a bit more involved than I thought it would be, but the end result was worth it! Hopefully my mistakes & issues can help you guys avoid them should you decided to change out your stereos as well.
Also, big shoutout to Jake ‪@DriveHub‬ for his double-din install video, he definitely helped me figure out I wasn't crazy when the radio power was tripping out due to the Axxess harness! Checkout his video here:

In the process of putting together a radio replacement in my 03 Anniversary Vert and I love the Anniversary red so I bought the double din painted like the waterfall for the same reason and bought a custom shale leather console lid embroidered with the “50th” logo. I also got the door handle bezels in matching red as well. After seeing yours I feel like this project will come together well.

When you tapped into the brown wire on the ignition, dod you still have the RAP features? Great video!

Looks great. Did you have any problem with the power antenna with the new receiver?

Thanks David! As for the antenna, most head units have an extra wire to power a motorized antenna so it was just a quick splice into the wiring that leads from the antenna… it’s been a while since I finished that project but I think I just looked up which color wire it was on the Corvette wiring diagram

I'm right in the middle of installing a single DIN Pioneer into my 1999 C5 with the Axxess XSVI-2004 interface. I've watched and read a lot before starting this (there's a lot of conflicting and questionable info out there). I'm currently testing the harness before tidying up and I've hit a problem that is a bit similar to that mentioned here.
What is happening is that the radio is coming on as soon as the key is inserted, before turning it. Also the car will not start. If I unplug the Axxess interface box and leave everything else connected, the bell starts pinging and the car can start. So it seems something is being pulled down. I've checked my wiring quite a few times.
I have the 2 red wires to the interface and the red radio wire connected to the ACC power, which I picked up from the yellow loose tail by the BCM. I confirmed with a voltmeter that this yellow wire only has 12v when the key is in the ACC or ON positions.
So I just can't fathom what's going on here. You said you didn't follow all the wiring in the Axxess instructions. What change did you make?

I did this exact same mod with the module connection, but lost my bass signal....still working on it.

Oh man, hopefully it’s just a lose connection, but you never know with these things… I used a PAC module when I did this in my Suburban and had all sorts of weird complications, turned out to be a bad unit :/

Great idea with the leather 👌

Very nice job. I just, like two days ago, put a Sony double din head unit in my 99 convertible that is exactly like yours. I like the leather you put in. Very creative. I'm also having some issues with the power coming on when you put the key into the ignition. Please elaborate on how you fixed that.

Great change Garrett. Once you have used the C-7 infotainment system it is hard to go back to something less. Your changes did so much to the dash to improve the C-5 dash. I find myself using Apple carplay all the time. Why do I keep paying for XM, I don't know.

Hey Brian, long time no see! Yeah, it’s kind of funny, because the C7 infotainment isn’t super fancy (compared to some other newer cars that practically have iPads on the dash), but it was definitely an adjustment going back to real buttons haha By far the biggest thing I appreciate in new cars: Bluetooth!

I have issues with mine. I used a Kenwood with a pac adapter to the bose stuff. I lose bass after prolonged play at high volume. Also yay another person who used weather tech mats in their vette!

Good video. Need that in my C5. You need to lay off the caffeine though.

Haha, yeah I must’ve been well rested that day, I usually have the opposite problem 😂
But yeah, I’d highly recommend the radio swap, much nicer to use especially if you’re used to other more modern infotainment systems!

Yeah, it looked nice black too, I just thought it would be fun to change it up a little since I had to buy a new one anyways :)

Should have bought the Vettenuts double din, you keep the existing doors that hide the cigarette lighter and cup holder and you don’t have to move the AC unit, just the radio.

Oh man, I’m sorry to hear that :( I had really good luck doing this in the Corvette, but using a different brand wiring interface on my Suburban gave me a lot of trouble… after a lot of sweat and tears I finally realized that I had received a bad module and once I swapped it out everything was good to go!
