  • Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was a German Baroque composer, organist and teacher, who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body (more than 500 pieces) of sacred and secular music. Pachelbel's music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; he had many pupils and his music became a model for the composers of south and central Germany. He even taught the man who became Bach's teacher -- Johann Sebastian's older brother, Johann Christoph.
    Pachelbel preferred a lucid, uncomplicated contrapuntal style that emphasized melodic and harmonic clarity. His music is less virtuosic and less adventurous harmonically than that of Dieterich Buxtehude, although, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different ensembles and instrumental combinations in his chamber music and, most importantly, his vocal music, much of which features exceptionally rich instrumentation. Pachelbel explored many variation forms and associated techniques, which manifest themselves in various diverse pieces, from sacred concertos to harpsichord suites. His contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era. Yet despite the sheer volume of his output, there's still no system to number all of his works.
    Today, Pachelbel is best known for his Canon in D major (although his Chaconne in F minor, the Toccata in E minor, and a set of variations, "Hexachordum Apollinis" are significantly notable). It is thought to have been written around 1680 but there are a few unsubstantiated claims that the music was written for the wedding of Johann Christoph Bach, on 23 October 1694, however, this is pretty unlikely even though he was a friend of the family. Although a listener might not know the name of the composition, the melody of the Canon is immediately recognizable. The piece has become so familiar, it is almost a musical cliché when it comes to weddings and it is easily the best known piece of classical music ever written.
    What does the word "Canon" mean then? A Canon (or Kanon) is a piece of music characterized by imitation and repetition. First one instrument or vocal introduces a part of the melody. Then, after a number of tones, a second instrument or vocal starts to repeat, or imitate, the first melody, playing the exact same tones, but with a time delay. More instruments or vocals may then be added, depending on the composer's wishes.
    In Pachelbel's Canon, the instrumentation is as simple as three violins, one cello, and eight bars of music repeated 28 times. His approach to writing the music was almost mathematical. The piece is constructed with an ostinato bass line (the same progression of notes repeated over and over again) accompanying the melody, as a canon (the same music repeated by the violin parts, in a round). A "Gigue" or Jig (also in D major) follows the Canon but it is far less known to the casual listener.
    The Canon's popularity snowballed in the 1970s, after French conductor Jean-François Paillard made a recording. Since then, the piece has been recorded and performed countless times. While Handel, Haydn, and Mozart all used the iconic bass line in some of their compositions, Pachelbel's Canon has become the basis of many modern songs. The progression of the chords of the piece can be found in the music of commercials, movie themes and even video games.
    Perhaps you'll recognize the Canon in this small selection of examples:
    "Basket Case" by Green Day
    "Cryin'" by Aerosmith
    "Go West" by The Pet Shop Boys
    "Graduation (Friends forever)" by Vitamin C
    "I'll C U When U Get There" by Coolio
    "Just Another Day" by Jon Secada
    "Let It Be" by The Beatles
    "Push" by Matchbox 20
    "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marley
    "One Tin Soldier" by Coven
    "Sk8ter Boy" by Avril Lavigne
    "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia
    "Tunnel of Love" by Dire straits
    "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister
    "With Or Without You" by U2
    The Canon was realized with a "plucked bass," "cello," "harp" and a touch of "harpsichord" for the lower end and 3 "string" tracks for the canon melody, with a fourth track for emphasis. The Gigue consists of a "bouncy bass" and "twangy continuo" with more "brass-like" timbres for the 3 upper melodies. 4 additional tracks of "bells" and "tuned noise" round it out.
    The visualization is done using the Music Animation Machine MIDI Player (www.musanim.com/player/) with the Canon's colour scheme based on the MIDI channel input, while the Gigue's is based on the music's pitch class.
    As always, the use of headphones will greatly enhance the listening experience.

    I think these visualization programs are an excellent tool. I don't read music, and this really helps me analyze what the different parts are doing in relation to each other and in the piece as a whole.

    I started to cry in the middle of this music. ...This was played at my Lady Gudrun von Bucken Funeral ...21-06-2013. I have words, this is Masterpiece and everyone should hear it...It's so beautiful....

      Thank you for adding such a lovely comment. I'm in the process of reworking both the Canon and Gigue into more of a "New Age" electronic version and I hope you will be even more moved. When I work on my music, I can often get so involved in the process that I almost don't "feel" the piece any more. When I step back for a while though and revisit the work, if I'm moved to tears or get chills, I know I'm on the right track. I'm happy to read that this was an emotional experience for you.

      +John Wayne Again, I can't get over the way your video shows the machanics of the music. That's the way I've always visualized it yet it was never quite so clear. Thanks again.

      +John Wayne Thank you for your kind words sir. Someone once described the visualization as being the "DNA of the music." They not only can follow the score but see it as the "molecules" of the composition.
      Keep watching for more! :)

      laticana33 Iaticana33, your comment sincerely touched me. I have had similar replies from teachers who now use my videos (with this particular visualization) so that the students can get an idea of the flow of the instruments being played, without having to know how to read music. For most of my future "Baroque-tronic" pieces, I wish to put out two video versions - this "follow-along" style and then something else that I can use to create visual interest along with the auditory experience. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know that my video was especially appreciated by a student whose perception is uniquely individual. Thank you for this. :)

      Thank you Nick. I wish my laptop was more powerful - these "capture live" visualizations can be jerky and I have to repeatedly record the screen to get a decent version to post. Often, the videos take longer to do than the music. I try to make them all visually interesting to enhance the music. I appreciate you stopping by to listen - and - to comment. :)

      Too monotonous? LOL I'm probably going to be playing the "harp" part (portable keyboard) in a recital featuring real Strings, a Moog modular performer and my DAW (digital audio workstation - for accompaniment). We're doing a show in a semi-"switched-on" style... all sorts of "Baroque-tronic" pieces - some featured in the works of Wendy Carlos. Very excited about it. :)

      I do my utmost to reply - it's the least I can do for those who have been so kind as to comment and let me know that my hobby has some worth. I have heard the Canon too many times (and don't think I did a particularly good job of it through my boredom) but really used it here as a means to do the Gigue which is relatively unknown to most casual Classical music listeners.

      If I was singing it I think it'd free me up a lot to do more movement. You're able to focus on the beauty of the music rather than playing it correctly due to the fact that you're playing the same part repeatedly.

      Thanks again for your consideration. I've started dabbling in a more "New Age" version (closer to Tomita's style than Carlos'). It certainly won't be "sedate" but a much broader arrangement with touches of choir voices... somewhat more ethereal like my "Albinoni's Adagio" (th-cam.com/video/NB3G8jBWSVE/w-d-xo.html).

    I originally tuned in for Bach. I'm commenting for Pachelbel. This is outstanding musicianship demonstrating the timelessness of these pieces. I feel utterly inspired like I'm hearing music I haven't heard in decades, even though I heard this exact piece about last week or so. Thank you. There is hope.

      @CareyRMeltz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very kindly. I am in the process of redoing it in a "new age" style - reminiscent of the late Isao Tomita's work but very different from the version he released. I specifically did this first version very simplified as a medium to realize the Gigue - so seldom played (and rather unfamiliar to most who only know of the Canon).

    Wonderful. And the visualization is a great way to realize the counterpoint in a very graphic way. By the way, the canon is directly used in "Rain and Tears" by Aphrodite's Child.

    Well, I found you because of the British traffic jam, so I'm very pleased. My sister heard the gigue after the canon and it's truly criminal they aren't played together all the time: the gig wakes you up from the nap you've been lulled into! HA! I kid. Will catch the rest of the ones you've done. Bach was switched on for me when Carlos became Wendy. MANY years ago. Thanks!!!

BTW Carlos had been living as Wendy during the production time of "S-OB" but only released it under "Walter" because she thought that no one would take her seriously as a woman, pioneering an entirely new genre of music, "Classitronic."

      Thanks so much. When something is so exquisite that it can overwhelm me to tears, it's almost difficult to articulate how it feels. When it happens to me listening to others' music, it's one thing, but if I can make it happen listening to my own work, then I know I've done something special. I'll be uploading a "Tomita-esque" version of Bach-Gonod's "Aven Maria" (hopefully before the holidays) and it puts my emotional tears into overdrive. I hope you'll come back and look for it. :)

      Awh, thank you so much for your kind words. I am planning on redoing it in a less "mechanical" manner (more "new age synthesized) in a similar style to my version of Albinoni's Adagio. I just have so many pieces in the works and so little time right now.
      In terms of the notes, I appreciate that you've taken the time to read them. I find it helpful to put the composition into some kind of historical perspective and draw people in to discover something they didn't know about the piece of the period it comes from. I learn something new as well and sometimes, the insights help direct how I go about bringing the music to life in a new way.

I've had a lot of messages and comments on videos with this specific visualization, for the very reason you point out... music teachers mostly but even a math teacher who used it to show intervals and the logical shapes and patterns that appear. One very special message was from a teacher of children with special needs, especially autistic ones. She reported that the visuals fascinated the students and they were able to "watch" the music play In a way that she'd never had with them - their complete focus and interest.

Though there is such a simplicity in the beauty of the melodic line, it is the canonic repetitions through each of the instruments that truly seems divinely inspired. The extreme popularity of this piece as a Baroque staple has never turned it into a cliché for me. In fact, I'm working on a less "switched-on" and more "new age" version so please stay tuned. Cheers from Canada. :)

      How are you doing on the new version,@@CareyRMeltz ? I would normally say that I'm sick and tired of this piece, but I REALLY like the phrasing and voicing of this version! You've captured something that is hidden in other treatments: it sounds more animated, interesting, melodic and less "plodding", it "breaths"; so I'm really interested in your next treatment.
      Oh, and I LOVE the Gigue!

    • @CareyRMeltz
      @CareyRMeltz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@julianopificius6910 Thanks Julian. I appreciate your comments throughout my channel. While I've been wanting to redo this, I am experiencing certain hearing deficits in my left ear and am finding it difficult to develop new work. Though I'd started the redo before, it was far more reliant of a broad audio vista laden with panoramic and other stereo-specific effects. Now it's not always easy to determine exact spatial positioning and I have to rely more on visual meters than my hearing. I am in the process of reviving an old favourite (for which most of the work has already been done) and something new where instrument positioning doesn't have to be as specific as is usual with my mix-downs.

    • @CareyRMeltz
      @CareyRMeltz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would be tempted to say that there's complexity in its simplicity. That is, the piece is fairly straight-forward and obviously repetitious... but it's in the subtlety of the variations wherein lies the genius. (Speaking of "variations," my next upload will be a synthetic orchestral version of Ravel's "Boléro." I've been working on it here and there for over 2 years. The nuances in the repetition, orchestration and my careful attention to the stereo sound that keep it from getting monotonous.

    Well Done!!!! I love the choice of program that shows each musical line: what is it called, and do you "tweak" the results it produces sometimes? The artistry here is excellent, and I LOVE your non-Wikipedia summary of Pachelbel and his music: did you write this? It's lucid and concise yet quite accessible to those with only limited musical knowledge. In short, thank you for this - and for including the cute little piece at the end: Pachelbel was NOT a One-Hit-Wonder!!!

    • @CareyRMeltz
      @CareyRMeltz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, thanks for taking the time to write your comments and questions altareggo.
      To start, the visualization is produced by the Music Animation Machine Midi Player (MAMM Player). Before I start my actual mix-down process with all the tracks exported to Audition, I do a simple export of the file as a MIDI (the sound creations don't translate well to GM but it's simply the notes and their channels that matter). I open up the MIDI into the MAMM Player and do a screen capture. Once that's done, I'll crop it as desired and will often "tweak" the initial video to enhance the saturation/contrast/sharpness/etc. One I have the visual part done, I just pop the elements into Windows Movie Maker and finalize and upload my completed project.
      In terms of the notes to each piece I do, I will compile research from a variety of sources (including Wikipedia) and summarize to add points of interest and historical reference to give the reader something they may not have known. I really appreciate what you wrote here as that's exactly my intent. Often it can take a few hours to get the wording just right or to edit myself enough to get the whole thing to fit! :)
      To be honest, I'm not completely satisfied with this version (despite its popularity and the number of views its received) and the Canon is so over-played - it's a bit of a Baroque cliche. It was more or less a medium I used to present the much lesser known Gigue that accompanies it (and I am very happy with the results). I'm in the process of doing a New Age Synthesized creation in tribute to the late, great Isao Tomita. He did a version of the Canon but mine is in his style, yet nothing like his.
      Thank you again for your interest and thoughtful post. I hope you find other works on my channel that you enjoy as well.

    This piece and your other similar pieces give me a lot of pleasure. I enjoy classical music but am not an expert - I wish you would give the instrument/color pairs for all these works. Have you ever tried to interest people who work with the deaf in this as a way to promote deaf people's appreciation for music?

    • @CareyRMeltz
      @CareyRMeltz  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Annetta Cheek What a great idea!!! I try to use the visualization when I can but sometimes it just looks too jerky and so I may or may not use it but also do a different one to upload as well. I've received wonderful comments from teachers with one in particular coming from a teacher of an autistic student. He can't read music but is able to follow along and "watch" the music (say, focusing on a violin) and follow along with the "notes" of that track. Other's who can't read music had said that it helps them to follow the tracks as well so they can get an idea of how to follow the music. BTW, if you want to watch and/or promote other videos with a far superior visualization, the guy who invented the Music Animation Machine Midi player visualization has his own page... th-cam.com/users/smalin. Thank you for your comment and interest.

    How long did it take you to make it this good? Also, what program did you use?

    • @CareyRMeltz
      @CareyRMeltz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +MrMCAlien Wow, thank you very much. The music process can be quick or long and tedious... depends on how smoothly the conversion process from sheet music (PDF) to MIDI goes. I use Neuratron's Photoscore to start the process and work through it bar-by-bar and staff-by-staff to get all the notes into an electronic format. Then I'll import the project into Avid's Sibelius where I can further refine and correct music with ties and other notation details. I can also control some of the volume and tempo adjustments. Once I'm satisfied with all of that, I'll export to MIDI and then open with Mixcraft. It's here where I'll further tweak tempo and volume nuances. Once I've created my synthesized timbres using a variety of VST plug-ins, I'll output each instrument track as a .WAV. I do all the editing, mixing and mastering in Audition where I can add and configure real time effects one track at a time within the multi-track framework. If I feel that something needs a specific adjustment or a particular additional effect at, say, a given point, I can immediately edit the source track. Sometimes things go quickly, depending on how much time I have or if I'm in a creative mood. Other times, it can take me weeks or months depending upon how things are shaping up. I often will get bored or have to step back from a piece so I can come back at it with a "fresh ear," as it were. I too, will create special emphasis tracks where I can add some flare to highlight individual notes or selected passages - either with sound or spatial placement; everything is very carefully considered when it comes to the stereo sound.
      I have many more pieces in the works but I'm still needing to finalize things here and there. Also, I do have a number of other pieces complete but I like the visuals to be as interesting to look at as the music is to hear... I've yet to complete those videos.
      Thanks for your interest and I hope I was able to provide enough information as to how I go about doing what I do - it's a far cry easier than the old analogue process of recording things note-by-note manually and then piecing all those bits of magnetic tape together to mix down.

      That's awesome. I've seen some rather "avant-garde" methods myself whereby glissandos and other notation are made with articulated lines to denote the idea of the notes, etc. I seem to recall that one of the pieces from the soundtrack to "The Exorcist" was done in such a way - no actual notes but more-or-less just guidelines for the musicians... it was a very un-nerving cue in the movie.

      Hey TNTEric Lin. The visualization is the Music Animation Machine MIDI Player (MAMM Player) found here: www.musanim.com/ with the download available here: www.musanim.com/player/. You may also want to check out some of the videos created by the software developer (using his latest, non-public software): th-cam.com/users/smalin and th-cam.com/users/musanim

      Thanks. :) Per my notes... "The visualization is done using the Music Animation Machine MIDI Player (www.musanim.com/player/
      ) with the Canon's colour scheme based on the MIDI channel input, while the Gigue's is based on the music's pitch class."

      @@CareyRMeltz do you have to have it linked to a DAW or does it run stand alone?

      @@ThoosieCentral Check out the link... it's free to download - stand-alone program that provides a variety of visualizations (simple GUI) for any .mid file. Enjoy.

    Nice! I did just the Canon using sequenced strings.

      Thank you Isaku. I really wanted to post the Gigue but didn't want to post it alone since it's mostly the Canon that everyone's heard. I wanted to pair them for their contrast in both tempo and my choice of timbres. I just listened to your version - very uplifting in its pacing and clarity of the strings. Well done sir.
