Thankyou for the story .Maugham seems to know exactly the characterestics of the chinese and the malays .Although there is no mention of the indians in this story ,he knew quite alot about the ways and behaviour of all the 3 races .He also has some knowledge of the local.malay dialect like the chichak ( lizard ) ,the sarong ( a seàme loose wrap around that both men and women use in Malaya and is still used by them .A very keen interest and an eye for detail ,this extremely clever gentlement ,Maugham.had .Thank you once again for the story .One thing l dont agree is that one cannot cleanse themselves of the emotion and the guilt after committing murder esp of añinnocent man and no passion can absolve them of the sin.they had the Cardwrights committed.
All I do is check the MLB scores and study Japanese and listen to at least 2 SM short stories. Among other videos. I’ve thought a lot about the writer, and his craft, and his characters. I m much conflicted about him and them and it. I don’t know what to thank Neuralsurfer, or see him as a dope peddler..lol😮. I wish I could reach some conclusions, but this unusual July heat is just what we deserve for not giving our attention to long term health and safety. I don’t think Maugham characters are any different from peoples i could meet in.Ginza, ( if I were to make that effort to go there) were all too much about short term goals and desires, myself included. So reluctantly I see myself , or the worst part of myself spread across these characters. Maugham is just the messenger, we shouldn’t kill him.
35 years ago I was living much akin to the way you're living now: 27 years old, living like a spartan in Kichijyojo, studying Japanese, and discovering WSMaugham. Stayed 14 years. Maugham is still a personal favorite. Take care

It appears that many of Mr Maugham’s stories were intertwined within this story, and that all his stories about the Malay’s and there around are stories where essentially everyone knew everyone in some way or another. *(Just Some Reflections)* Respectfully, Grace 🩰
