I said Harry Kane was burnt out at this level in our previous tournament, yet he continues too leave him on the pitch for the full 90mins. He's a City player and media darling, he won't be dropped. There are certain protected players who come with cachet (usually prestige/wealth related) and it gives them an unfair advantage.

He unbalances the team being on the left of that front 3. Gordon or Eze are better suited to that role in terms of the overall benefit of the team. Not just trying to pigeonhole star players into the team regardless of whether it's the right balance or not.

@@pendafen7405 Not really mate, Roy was horrendous and Sven was a little better than him, but I’ve not watched a good technical and skilful attacking England team since 1996, when Terry venables was in charge. I never watch England but watched the first half last night with son and grandson, then 10 mins of the second half I went to bed, frustrated and disappointed and promised myself they will not get any more of my time until Southgate had gone. 👍

I have to disagree with a lot of things Wright and Roy Keane said. In a short tournament like this, you are not allowed an off night. You don't have the luxury of many games to get your form back. If you take Argentina for example, Lionel Scaloni was brave enough to replace Lautaro Martinez with Julian Alvarez when it appeared Martinez was not having a great tournament even though Martinez was the first choice striker coming to the WC. Scaloni was brave enough to replace Papau Gomez with MacAlister. He was brave enough to replace Paredes and Guido with Enzo Fernandes when it appeared both Parades and Guido were not having a great tournament even though they were the first choice holding midfielders coming into the tournament. This idea that you keep starting a player because of what he has done in the past doesn't apply to a major tournament. You need players who can deliver here and now. It will be pointless to come with a 26 man squad if players who churn out underwhelming performances keep getting game time.
Remember Lothar Mattheus sitting with BBC pundits saying Rooney wasn't a midfield player, and them all disagreeing. England 1:2 Iceland was the game.
Keep playing a full back in midfield, and Foden on the left, like these 3 want, and England won't progress beyond the quarters.

Phoden is a natural 10, Gordon is a natural LW and if Bellingham is the starting 10, then phoden is has to take a seat

England dont have any players that run in behind, none of Foden, Kane or Saka do it so whats the point in having TAA in the team, who can pass the ball over the top with accuracy, they’re not playing to his strengths or vice versa?! There was only a few times when the ball was crossed in and that was Bowan doing it… if he plays again, we need Eze or Gordon who do run in behind!!

Tbh I think the circumstances of Euro 2020 made everyone a lot more forgiving and open to the warm fuzzy feelings of hope & togetherness--we all thought it could be the end of days, so we decided to stop being bitter for one summer. The point is that good teams often have off nights in major tournaments and then grow into it and improve. Whether England do that is up for debate, but there's no need to push the panic button because we didn't win the first game 5-0 or whatever score we all seem to expect.
people will still continue the cycle of alternating between "he needs to play in midfield, its his best postion" and "he needs to play on the wing its his best postion" as he stinks it up in both positions.

In a tournament with possibility 7 games playing to the Final, you don't need or want best team performance in the opening game, playing at the end or final two games is far more important.
Trent and Foden were so poor, we've got a wealth of talent and should use it whenever players are useless.

English players are hugely overrated, look at the German players how comfortable on the ball they are, same for Portugal players,

Keane is not having any of it regarding Trent being a midfielder, and I tend to agree with him. I think Trent would be most effective as a marauding wing-back whipping balls in for Kane and Jude. Trying to get him to play like Toni Kroos in the middle of the park is an exercise in futility.

In the England match, I only saw Billingham moving all over the field, and also Rice making an effort at the back in order to retrieve the ball and pass it to the other players..... Saka, was excellent and brilliant on the right side...but the rest of the players were Honestly, just ghosts
Foden didn't have an off night, he's not a winger. It's really not difficult to figure it out
Kane is one of the best players I've ever seen play. His passing, striking and mental game is off the charts. The biggest problem England seem to have is getting him the ball either to distribute or shoot. They have to funnel everything through him he creates so much. I don't understand why they don't run everything through him. Does anyone who knows this sport have an intelligent answer to the question?

I'm English and I thought the england players particularly Kane were diving alot. Serbia had a go but non of em knock about with Grealish to take lessons from
50% of the field players came from the top 2 teams in the PL with Jude. So even if you don’t count Kane and Trent as stars (of course they are), you have 60% of your field players from the best teams. Having the right manager matters.

As Barnes says Foden will always have an off night for England. They don’t play the same way as City.
Foden allowed an off night when he played left wing in his breakthrough season at city but Trent, who did well until they switched to a double pivot, a role he literally had never played before so was doing it on the fly in the match, gets slaughtered.
