How to Tie The Foam Hawthorn

- When it comes to fly fishing this is one fly that works. If you're fly fishing for river or lake fish then you need this dry fly.
With the advent of warmer weather, we often see an abundance of insects but for me, the hawthorn fly is the pick of the TERRESTRIAL bunch.
This clumsy flyer will often end up in the water and the trout absolutely love them!
My Hawthorn is a simple tie but it is very effective both on lakes and on rivers!
Hook: FM Heavyweight Grub, size 10, 12
Thread: Black
Body: Black closed-cell foam, 2.8mm
Legs: Black knotted PT
Thorax: Soladrini 51
Hackle: Genetic cock, black
Wing: Fish On Ultra Dry Yarn, white
If you don't tie your own and would like these or any other of my patterns or indeed have a bespoke order, please get in touch on my website: www.flyfishguide.co.uk
Take care and thank you for watching!
This should float all day! I really like the pattern, not too difficult but definitely has a touch of realism about it.
We don't have Hawthorne flies here but we have a Black fly with red legs and a shiny body I cannot find in my book. It kind of looks like a shiny Hawthorne fly, so I'm thinking the same family. Definitely not an Ant, it looks a bit more waspish but does neither sting nor bite. I've never seen them near water, but I still think your pattern will work here. Thank you for posting!!
Its called a heather fly , guessing from your description.
heather pal!
Thank You ...... Can’t wait to try this on the
Au Sable this Season ! 🌟🎣🌟
Hope you enjoy
