  • Rafting the Wild & Scenic Eel River in California with Ron, Joan, Jon, Pat , Glenn and Buddy the dog... March 2010 put-in flow was 2960 CFS at Dos Rios. Dos Rios to Alderpoint is about 49 miles and takes a minimum of 3 days. The shuttle is 6 hours or you can hire a shuttle driver. Approximately 200 miles long, it drains a rugged area in the California Coast Ranges and flows North. The Eel River's watershed is 3,684 square miles and is the third largest in California. During the flood of 1964 the flow was 700,000 CFS and was 19 feet over the abandon railroad that parallels the river.

Thank you for the video, Ron. Do you happen to know if hog hunting is legal in that area? My girlfriend and I plan to paddle this stretch in about a month, and I'm thinking of bringing my recurve bow.

Man, how do you take such a big boat to the water?
P.S. Man on small boat does know his stuff.

Let me know when you guys are going Ron. We have a school age daughter (she'll be 11 in January) so it would probably have to line up with her Spring break - and I would have to convince wifey one more time to sleep in a tent! Last time was just one night on the Tuolumne.
Way back I used to enjoy Winter runs on the short Pillsbury section.

Nice video Ron. Never quite made it on this run (did the shuttle once, but too little water so it was onward to the Klamath).
Would you mind if we linked to this on our site? There is almost nothing for DR to Alderpoint on youtube.
    Happy Trails,

Hi Lee; Long time no see. Sure you can use this video. Why don't you join us next March or April on a Eel River Trip?

Great video Ron. My wife and I jeeped from Laytonville to Dos Rios to Covelo and I just kept thinking I wanted to raft / kayak this part of the Eel. Do you folks still do this run? if so, how are things lately? Any 411 is much appreciated. Many Blessings, Shon

You have to have enough rain to go and the time so it is hit and miss. Early in April is about right if there has been some good rain storms a week before. Should be fine...
