1991 I started playing disc golf with a lid. It didn't take long for Tom to get me hooked on golf discs even though I resisted. First disc was a shark I bought from his IFO (Identified Flying Objects) van. Tom sold me everything in my bag (and the bag its self) out of the back of that van, he was my "dealer" and I was a "plastic junky". He pushed me to join the PDGA (#7239) and got me playing tournaments. Tom set a goal for himself to make a living "Tossing Plastic", I'm not sure how successful he was but you have to respect that he saw the possibility as early as 1973. He was all in with IFO, traveling to tournaments and selling from the van as well as dealing with the factories and supplying other disc sellers. He even taught a flying disc course at University of Florida. Always hustling. If/when I get up to Huntsville I will play that course with a Frisbee, the way it was originally intended.
First time I played the course at Brahan Springs was in summer of '83, right after the World Championships in Huntsville... found a mini with the Worlds logo sticker on it, got Tom to autograph it a few years ago. One of my most prized possessions. It's amazing how much the course has changed over the years, but still manages to retain the feel of the original.
#11392, and Tom was a dear friend since the 90's. That course has lost over a third of the trees over the years... it used to be so much tighter and had the nickname Bark'em park. :D Glad to have you in the area! If you ever put Inverness in Birmingham on your list, let me know and I would love to take you around the course. Great stuff! PS - the 90 self catch was with an old school frisbee thrown up into the wind and then he ran 90 yards and caught it with one hand. Tom was the man!
Hola Pete, So glad you could share some stories with us. I think to this day I could flick a condor under the right conditions on forehand and run and catch it at 125 ft, I might tear a muscle, but I’m almost 50.

Tom in a way reminds me of Simon Lizotte... he was just gifted a little bit differently than us mere humans! :D By the way the 50's aren't so bad as long as you don't mind the pain and the noises you make just walking. :D Now when I play Ultimate on Fridays my goal isn't so much to score and win... it is just to survive and not have to take a trip to the hospital. This course looks like a fun one, those tall straight trees are fun to try and avoid! I love how you make your rounds interesting for us while you showcase so many courses. Tom Monroe (PDGA # 33) won 20 world championships! He is truly the G.O.A.T. of disc golf! I love the history lessons keep up the great content & I know you like the "scissor style" of throwing, but I think you can get more distance with a run up, X-step style type throw. Might improve your accuracy & power. ✌ Disc golf life brutha! 👊
10/10 on the course review as well. Hard to imagine it with a more dense mature tree situation. I love a super tough track in the trees without much of a rough situation. And not a ton of footage for my lesser arm. I met the cat that dyed that envy. He was way early on rocking a Tossing Plastic t shirt back in October in Sanford. Not being uptight 😂 you won the exchange and then it became a draw when you got caught up in a double honk. Your lucky Craig wasn’t ‘Cape Fear’n It’ under that van. Just get warmer already, sheesh.

Hey bud, Huntsville native here. You definitely got attention because of the camera. Me and my friends play this course all the time and no one ever honks. However this is an area where city workers and police officers take their breaks. It was fun to watch you on my home town course and knowing what was a good shot and what wasn't. I hope the next time you or anyone else visit the North Alabama area you go and play Sharon Johnston, it is a nice little gem that everyone will enjoy.

@ if for no other reason it’s a beautiful course, it’s quiet and out of the way. But it plays as a good mix of a bomber type of course but make sure you place your leg shots right other wise putting can be tricky. Same can be said for another course in the area called Sunshine Oaks. Also I believe both were designed by Levone Wolf.
I’ll second Sharon Johnston, it’s a beautiful and challenging course. Hole 17 on a pretty day is the most scenic hole in the area. Hard to convince me otherwise.
People now a days just enjoy being A-holes at any cost. I'd get pissed!!! You've been a great teacher of the history of DG. Had a day off and played round in the mitten last Friday. 2 inches on the ground and 19 degrees. Busted out the hand warmers. Best day out in a while. Looked like a really fun course. Great video as usual. My PDGA number is nearly a quarter of a million. I just started about 18 or 20 months ago. With regard to the honking. that seemed genuinely inconsiderate, but whether is was or not, if you let it get into your head and negatively affect your game, you're always gonna be the loser. As hard as it is, let it go and focus on the fun yet to be had. As an aside, I lived in Huntsville from ages 2 through 9 (hundreds of years ago, probably during the Jurrasic period). Then moved to Ft. Worth. My father was an engineer that although civilian, worked on military contracts so we moved around a bunch always living near a military base of some sort. In Huntsville, it was Redstone Arsenal. A little Googling says that Brahan Spring Park is 169 acres and change. That seems large considering your observations. There's also a Brahan Spring Recreation Center. Not sure which is part of which. Couldn't find an acreage for the rec area or the course by itself.
Tom used to say Lavone Wolfe #580 was the reason he didn't have a single digit pdga number. Lavone was procrastinating so Tom went ahead and sent off for his number. #fore
A little more about this course. It's the busiest course in Alabama according to UDisc. And it was host to the 1983 and 1993 PDGA World Championships. I have been playing since 1996. The only changes are a loss of trees due to pine beetles in a couple of spots which you can probably tell. There are some wide open areas that were not there when I started playing.
Been playing since the summer of ‘23 and have no pdga number. Just played my first tournament recently but it was part of a local unsanctioned series. Don’t plan on joining pdga if I can help it.

5 digit here #73768. Those southeastern courses are charming! I hadn’t heard of Tom Monroe until now, hole 9 break was awesome story time! The honking is almost expected half the time with the drivebys… but I would agree the double tap was uncalled for 😞 Got out and played with the gorgeous weather in the Midwest and really had that rust caked on! Keep grinding and enjoying the van life!

PDGA #275610 here. I've been playing since 2017. Never thought I would be good enough to join my friends in competition. But I took the leap this year, and ended up getting a MA4 win, getting sponsored, and going to the state championship! Didn't do well in states, but it was awesome! Also got a MA3 win in an unsanctioned tournament with my best round ever, -10. Very short course though, multiple holes were under 200ft. Can't wait for the 2025 season!
It would just be horrible if that city worker had one of his valve stems get loose, fall out, and get lost somewhere. I've heard that it happens -- it's just weird. After the second time, it would likely become my project for the day.

It's right around 18 acres. It's amazing how well Tom made use of that land. So many courses that size are just the same shot over and over.

I've played some pretty dated courses but nothing super old. Putting on mach 1 baskets is not exactly easy
