I think its more because Russian media tries to use those handshakes in their media to show "Ukrainian support for Russia". It's not really about the person and more about what's displayed in media that can be used by Russian national media.

Especially when the Ukrainian tennis heads went after a 16 year old Ukrainian girl for shaking hands with a Russian girl. It's fine that Ukrainian players don't want to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians. I understand the reasoning and thinking behind it. What I don't respect is someone like Kostyuk who couldn't put that into words but instead invites hostility. Svitolina either needs to sit her down and have a chat or completely disassociate from her.
I'm sure Svitolina has a few detractors from within the Ukrainian tennis community. I'm sure her recently retired male counterparts don't agree with her being too civil with the likes of Kasatkina.
Big ups to Baindl though. The only Ukrainian who continues to shake hands with Russian opponents. Whether it's because she doesn't see herself as a visible, big name in tennis or she doesn't care for adding fuel to the fire, I'd like to know her thoughts on this. Interesting.

@@Lucian1692 I don't know as I'm not familiar with their family and friends but 1) maybe 2) we shouldn't force people to put their friends and family in danger, if you know the Russian and Belarussian power and their way of treating contradiction you'll understand why some tennis female players are reluctant to tell their opinion about the war openly.

@@romamiroshnichenko9957 There is no question of empathy dude, just basic common sense : Russian and Belarussian random people aren't responsible for the war and are suffering from some consequences too. In a war, everyone ends up suffering, except the people that decided it. You can't ask them to put their relatives in danger, especially when you know their speech won't have a big consequence on the war anyway.

Ukrainians think they're a completely distinct racial group from Russians. We humor them for now even though the rest of us know they're all the exact same people.

MULTUMESC.

i truly understand the ukrainian players, but not in the case of 2 russian female players who always spoken open against putin and his war- Pavlyuchenkova and Kasatkina. Also I dont know why, but Varvara Gracheva plays for France now. The other russian players should follow her and represent other countries if they really against the war and Putin
