  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 ธ.ค. 2019
  • Today, we're going to make a Spyderco Para3 Lightweight with a Maxamet blade, by swapping blades among two Spyderco Factory Seconds. And in the end, we'll end up with a Maxamet Para3 Lightweight, which doesn't sell out in 6 seconds on some dealer's website.

If you lived in Golden Colorado you could work a few hours a week at Spyderco assembling knives. That would help with your OCD condition.I always check your videos when I am going to take a knife apart the 1st. time.Your Spyderco Smock video saved me grief with tiny second detent ball.I would have lost that for sure. Thanks Nick.

2 suggestions for ya! 1. Instead of loctite, use Vibra-tite VC-3. Not only is it advertised to be used in plastic as well as metal, but it’s also removable, reusable without reapplication, and most of all ADJUSTABLE!!! And 2. I’ve tried a lot of different alcohol applicators and the best 2 I’ve found are, 1st- The squeeze style bottles used in tattoo shops with the fine applicator style tips, and 2nd- a travel size spray bottle. I picked one up at the grocery store that actually locks and has an adjustable spray pattern. And best of all, it was only $1. Just a few thoughts on what I’ve found to work the best for me. Figured I’d pass them along to a fellow knaf guy!!!

The fact that your hack worked shows how tight the tolerances are held by Spyderco.
If they hadn't been held in a tight range the cumulative tolerance stack could have prevented the hack.
If Spyderco ever makes the maxamet version P3lightweight I would buy one.

The tenacious lightweight in s35vn was my gateway into spyderco it’s a fantastic knife to get into spyderco with it costs about the same as a para 3 lightweight so the pm3 is also a great intro but I wanted the larger blade of the tenacious . However I now have a para 2 cru wear on the way and a pm3 lightweight

No matter which knife I buy, the Maxamet Para 3 is still my go to. Maxamet does require very little maintenance. I add a drop of cooking oil on each side of the blade, and then just wipe it off. Give it a good wipe. Enough of a film stays behind to protect the blade from orange acid and such but not enough to gunk it up. I think I only honed it on a ceramic rod once a year with pretty steady use. The edge retention is just great.

I was wondering about this. I want to get aftermarket scales onto a knife with a steel that is available only on a lightweight knife, e.g. Spy27. I would swap the lightweight knife blade onto a G10 frame, and then put aftermarket scales on that (most aftermarket e.g. Flytanium scales only fit the G10 version). I’ve never tried swapping a blade! I hope it works!

Next stop Pm2 then the 940-2. Am i scamming the system or being smart? I always keep knives like new and dont use them for anything that could hurt them. I've seen staining like that, or at least that *looked* like that, on some knives and generally just some steel wool takes it right out. I use 0000 grade to keep from leaving scratch marks, and it usually does the trick. I'm sure something less fine wouldn't mess up the finish too much anyway, though. Sometimes I use it on washers to clean them up and smooth out the action on cheaper knives, too.
Edit: I have never seen those pumpy booze bottles 😶 that's awesome. Must have. I'm going to have to consult MY fiancé haha

My knives get almost as much use out of my girlfriend's nail related stuff as her hands and feet do. Cuticle stick things make great pry bars, alcohol swabs clearly have their place and I've even touched up blemishes on clips with the right polish.

Have you tried 99% isopropyl alcohol? I picked up a bottle just for giggles, not thinking that it was going to be a vast improvement over 91%, but the evaporation time is muuuuch shorter and it feels like it leaves surfaces cleaner. I've converted myself.

Hey Nick. Suppose you have a Para 3. Then you swap the blade for a Maxamet. Then you swap the handle for the FRN (lightweight) handle. Then your lockbar breaks and you have to swap liners. Is this still the same Para 3 or a different knife? And if it's a different, at which point did it turn from the same knife to something else?
