    Just finished doing my driveway (8/4/2020) and yes all block paving, what an absolute mess. Well worth looking at it when all completed and very rewarding to look at but hope I won't have to go through all that again. Just lift the lot, Tar it, job completed No more mess. Happy days. :o) :o)

      If you applied a decent sealer you wouldn't loose the sand next time. It will also help against weeds. Next time will be a simple clean, spray some swimming pool grade chlorine bleach on beforehand and it practically cleans it for you.

      @DirtyDriveAway  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leewalker9008 something like smartseal is easier to use than a polyurethane such as resiblock. Resiblock will last longer but is very finicky with weather. You clean it, wait 5-7days (no rain 48hrs prior to and 12hrs after application) sand it and seal same day. Make sure the sand is brushed in and swept off really well.

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest I've tried many products on oil stains. The problem is the longer they are left the deeper they soak in. If you can catch them fairly quickly you can usually shift them with an oil remover. Anymore than a few weeks old and they are typically there to stay. You can remove the dark stain but you'll nearly always be left with a ghosting.

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @CraigCatterson possibly but it really depends on your karcher model. I think the smallest nozzle size you can buy is an 025. Most karchers are around 140-180bar at around 8-10 litres per min. You can buy them on ebay but you will need to make sure you buy the correct size otherwise it won't give you full pressure. If it's a domestic DIY karcher then they do their own version called a dirtblaster I think it is.

    Great videos. Helped me clean ca. 100sq m block pave driveway. Would be good to see some additional videos on how to deal with oil stains (cleaning with turbo nozzle doesn't help at all as one might expect) without replacing blocks.

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paweł Halicki hey, I haven't done an oil stain removing video as they are a nightmare to shift properly. I haven't found a 100% removal method without replacing blocks. It really all depends how long the oil has been down. Even on specific oil removing products it normally says for best results use within a few days of spill. Most of the stains we come across have been down months or years. You will normally remove the dirty colour by using some good ol fairy liquid and then hitting with a turbo nozzle. Resiblock OR is pretty good if the oil stain is recent. Other than that the oil soaks into the block to far to make any serious difference. I would say that there will always be a visible mark left as the blocks are quite thick and oil can penetrate quite deep over time. I bet if I true doing a video of the removal wouldn't work lol. Phill

    • @llohcire
      @llohcire 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find for more recent oil stains you can use cat litter, crush it in to the stain and replace a couple of times soaks it up prety good. Then wash.

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, proper weedkiller such as glyphosate (gallup) works well. As a professional, you must hold a licence to spray it as a business. Technically, as a homeowner, you can buy it, although you're not supposed to have it, if that makes sense. As with any weedkiller, it needs to be applied every 4-6 weeks to keep on top of them.

      Poly sand sets hard but as a top up it doesn't last long. It tends to crack too easily, it's best used as full depth but you won't get that with a clean. It really needs to be used when laid so you get the full 50mm depth. When cleaning it's only around 5mm depth so doesn't actually bind much sand.

      Glitch King Glitch King hi, you can spend hours researching washers. Ideally something with a good engine like honda or briggs, a good interpump pump and gearbox. You would ideally need something around 200bar+ that kicks out around 18lpm+ it really depends on your budget. A 200bar 18lpm machine will come in around £1600 ish. Go up in pressure and you will be looking around £2200, but go 250bar and 23lpm will set you back around £3000. Van size i have a LWB transit connect and i can get a 400l tank and all my gear in. Anything smaller and it just wont fit a water tank in as it wont be long enough or have the payload to carry the washer and water plus hoses etc. Phill

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi John, yeah I've used the "setting sand" its known as polymeric sand. It works OK but it can make a bloody mess. Ive used it a few times as its helps with weeds, it doesn't stop them as the joint depth of poly sand isn't overly deep. The problem is the polymers in the sand can leave a grey film on the blocks, and you can't rinse the pants out of it as it washes the sand out. In my opinion they need to develop a product that doesn't leave this mess behind. It doesn't matter how well you broom or clear the surface, the polymers run out the joints when you wet it in. I now no longer use it and would rather seal instead. The sand is also expensive ranging from £35 per 15kg up to resiblocks resifix at around £60 for 20kg.

      No not really, to be honest those joint compounds are rubbish. They aren't pressure washer proof and they crack on driveways. Your best off pointing it properly with sand/cement. Unless you go full depth with resin jointing it just won't last.

    Weedkiller that uses Glyphosate (like the original Roundup) is forbidden in a lot of countries as it can cause cancer.
    I actually have some decent results with "weed free" paving sand. By the time the effect wears off after 3 to 5 years it's time to redo the whole driveway anyway. Saves you the monthly treatments and is only marginally more expensive than regular "white sand".

      The sand locks the blocks together and provides drainage and an element of flexibility. Weeds love it but it's part of the structureof the drive. You could seal it to help with sand loss but that will hinder drainage. Phill

    Very good video and very professional how do you stop the sand washing on a drive with a slope

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Workman thank you dave. To be fair preventing sand wash is quite hard especially on a steep incline. Sometimes i find watering in the sand after brushing in can help settle it a bit better rather than waiting for a downpour of rain. Other options are using a jointing compound sand like resifix which sets hard, or by applying a sealer which binds and stabilises the sand. The latter 2 obviously cost more money but will usually last between 18months-5 years depending on the quality of the sealer. Cheap sealers tend to wear off quicker where as something like resiblock trade will do about 3 years and the superior around 5 years. The resifix sand is also good for around 5 years depending on environment. Phill

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GORDON MCRAE Hi Gordon, I don't to he fair. I use a laser measure for dimensions. unless you real good at maths then you will get an approx size. The way I do it on funny shape drives is to rough sketch the layout onto paper and break the drive down into squares/rectangles. If you have a curve then you can measure as a square and just half it third it etc. To be honest once you get good on measuring sqM you can just guess the bit on the curve. Some areas can be quite hard to measure accurately but the squaring off method works well.

      Really it varies depending on how tough a clean is. I would say on average you would use 1000L of water for every 80-100sqM of block pave. On current water utility rates that's approx £2.80 in water.

    ? The best way to get rid of moss and weeds is to use a chemical weedkiller that kills the roots. Your pressure washer may get some roots but others it will leave in the grown to regrow weeks after you left.
    The reason "professional" cleaners don't do this is cost - weedkiller takes time to work so it requires a visit to treat, and then a revisit to wash (followed of course by a revisit to re-sand). 3 visits are more than a cleaner will do as that eats into their income.

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's best to do this after cleaning. Weedkiller will work on weeds etc, but it doesn't remove them. Cleaning, sanding and then hitting with a decent weedkiller is the best way to keep it looking weed free. Unfortunately, using a weedkiller in the UK for commercial/business use requires a licence which is the main reason professional cleaners don't apply weedkillersnas this licence is expensive to obtain. Also weedkiller needs to be done every 6-8weeks to keep the area free from weeds.

      I have a professional grade machine. I'm currently building a new one. In this video it was 250bar at 23 litres a min. But the new one is 350bar at 23lpm. There is a massive difference between a karcher and a professional machine both in performance and price. With the cost of everything now even the 13hp 200bar 21lpm honda machines are around £2200.

    Why using sand and not concrete to seal the bricks? Any tips please? Because I feel the weeds will come back if you don't use cement

    • @DirtyDriveAway
      @DirtyDriveAway  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because these blocks aren't designed to be concreted in. The way the drive works is that it allows flexibility within the joints. If you was to cement these blocks the weight of vehicles would just make it crack and crumble. The only way to help with weeds is to use a sealer, but that can be expensive.
